There are many types of rice with different grain sizes like short, medium, and long grain. Rinsing rice removes more starch by submerging and dumping it in a bowl rather than a strainer to avoid losing rice. For long grain white rice, boil it for 10 minutes then simmer for 15-20 minutes with a lid until cooked after adding oil, salt, and twice as much water as rice. Wild rice takes about 30 minutes to cook if soaked overnight or up to an hour if not soaked. Properly cooked rice can be eaten on its own or used in many dishes while under or over cooked rice can ruin a meal.
