6. Psalm 67:1-2
God be merciful unto us, and bless
us; and cause his face to shine
upon us; Selah. That thy way may
be known upon earth, thy saving
health among all nations.
7. The work of redemption is to restore man into
the image of his Maker. It is to bring him
back to the perfection in which he was created
and to promote the development of body,
mind and soul, that the divine purpose in his
creation is to be realized. In order for this to
be accomplished, every power of mind, soul
and body must be understood and used aright.
8. But the plan of
redemption had a yet
broader and deeper
purpose than the
salvation of man. It
was not for this
alone that Christ

12. “The central theme of the Bible, the theme
about which every other in the whole book

restoration in the human soul of the image of
God. From the first intimation of hope in the
sentence pronounced in Eden to that last
glorious promise of the Revelation, 'They
shall see His face; and His name shall be in
their foreheads' (Revelation 22:4),
13. the burden of every book and every passage
of the Bible is the unfolding of this wondrous
theme,--man's uplifting,--the power of God,
'which giveth us the victory through our Lord
Jesus Christ.' 1 Corinthians 15:57. He who

to him the whole treasure house of God's

shall appear, we may have confidence, and not be ashamed
before him at his coming.
1 John 3:1 Behold, what manner of love the Father hath
bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God:
therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.
1 John 3:2 Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth
not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall
appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.
1 John 3:3 And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth
himself, even as he is pure.
17. When Adam came from the
Creator's hand, he bore, in his
physical, mental, and spiritual
nature, a likeness to his Maker.
"God created man in His own
image" (Genesis 1:27), and it was
His purpose that the longer man
lived the more fully he should
reveal this {Ed 15.1}
18. All his faculties were capable of
development; their capacity and
vigor were continually to
increase. Vast was the scope
offered for their exercise,
glorious the field opened to their
research. The mysteries of the
visible universe--the "wondrous
works of Him which is perfect in
knowledge" (Job 37:16)--invited
man's study.{Ed 15.1}
20. Throughout eternal ages he
would have continued to gain
new treasures of knowledge, to
discover fresh springs of
happiness, and to obtain clearer
and yet clearer conceptions of
the wisdom, the power, and the
love of God. {Ed 15.1}
21. More and more fully would he
have fulfilled the object of his
creation, more and more fully
have reflected the Creator's
glory. {Ed 15.1}
23. But by disobedience this was
forfeited. Through sin the divine
likeness was marred, and well-
nigh obliterated. Man's physical
powers were weakened, his
mental capacity was lessened,
his spiritual vision dimmed. He
had become subject to death. Yet
the race was not left without
hope. {Ed 15.2}
24. By infinite love and mercy the plan of
salvation had been devised, and a life of
probation was granted. To restore in man
the image of his Maker, to bring him back
to the perfection in which he was created,
to promote the development of body,
mind, and soul, that the divine purpose
in his creation might be realized--this
was to be the work of redemption. This is
the object of education, the great object
of life. {Ed 15.2}
26. In the Garden of Eden, sin had
broken the face-to-face relationship
between God and humanity. Sin
forfeited our first parents’
unhindered communion with God.
However, the Creator still desired to
draw us to Himself and to enjoy a
deep covenant relationship with
fallen humanity, and He began this
process right there in Eden.

27. Centuries later, in saving
Israel out of Egypt and
establishing the sanctuary
and the sacrificial system,
God again took the initiative
in bringing humanity back
into His presence.
Lessons From the Sanctuary, page 30
28. The sanctuary thus testifies of God’s
unceasing desire to dwell among His
people. This is God’s idea (Ps. 132:13-
14). His ultimate goal is relationship,
and the sanctuary was His chosen
means to do it. The sanctuary is the
tangible evidence of God’s presence
with His people on earth.
Lessons From the Sanctuary, page 30
30. "The temple of God was
opened in heaven, and there
was seen in His temple the ark
of his testament" (Revelation
11:19). The ark of God's
testament is in the Holy of
Holies, the second apartment
of the sanctuary.
31. In the ministration of the
earthly tabernacle, which
served "unto the example and
shadow of heavenly things,"
this apartment was opened
only upon the great Day of
Atonement for the cleansing of
the sanctuary.
32. Therefore the announcement
that the temple of God was
opened in heaven and the ark of
His testament was seen points
to the opening of the Most Holy
Place of the heavenly sanctuary
in 1844 as Christ entered there
to perform the closing work of
the atonement. {LHU 136.2}
33. "Christ is cleansing the temple
in heaven from the sins of the
people, and we must work in
harmony with him upon the
earth, cleansing the soul temple
from its moral defilement"
(Review and Herald., February
11, 1890).
38. “Those who are living upon the earth when the intercession of
Christ shall cease in the sanctuary above are to stand in the
sight of a holy God without a mediator. Their robes must be
spotless, their characters must be purified from sin by the
blood of sprinkling. Through the grace of God and their own
diligent effort they must be conquerors in the battle with evil.
While the investigative judgment is going forward in heaven,
while the sins of penitent believers are being removed from the
sanctuary, there is to be a special work of purification, of
putting away of sin, among God's people upon earth. This work
is more clearly presented in the messages of Revelation 14.”-

"The finishing of this work... for the
sanctuary was likewise the finishing of
the work for the people... The
cleansing of the sanctuary extended to
the people, and included the people,
as truly as it did the sanctuary itself...
.The finishing of the mystery of God is
the ending of the work of the gospel..

the taking away of all vestige of sin and the
bringing in of everlasting righteousness--Christ
fully formed--within each believer, God alone
manifest in the flesh of each believer in Jesus...
In the sanctuary itself, transgression could not
be finished, an end of sins and reconciliation for
iniquity could not be made... until all this had
been accomplished in each person who had a
part in the service of the sanctuary....
41. Ellet J. Waggoner
(1855 – 1916)
The Consecrated Way, pp. 113-19
The sanctuary itself could not be
cleansed so long as, by the confessions
of the people and the intercessions of
the priests, there was pouring into the
sanctuary a stream of iniquities,
transgressions, and sins... This stream
must be stopped at its fountain in the
hearts and lives of the worshipers,
before the sanctuary itself could possibly
be cleansed.
42. Ellet J. Waggoner
(1855 – 1916)
The Consecrated Way, pp. 113-19
Therefore the very first work in the
cleansing of the sanctuary was the
cleansing of the people. The sacrifice,
the priesthood, and the ministry of
Christ in the true sanctuary does take
away sins forever, does make the comers
thereunto perfect, does perfect "forever
them that are sanctified."

was complete, so the restoration of man from
the defilement of sin must be thorough and
complete. {CE 112.2}

the diet chosen for us by our Creator. These foods

possible, are the most healthful and nourishing.
They impart a strength, a power of endurance, and a
vigor of intellect, that are not afforded by a more
complex and stimulating diet.

must know themselves. They must understand in
regard to their own physical frames, that they may be
able with the psalmist to exclaim, "I will praise Thee,

ever have the appetite in subjection to the moral and
intellectual organs. The body should be servant to the

must learn the lessons of temperance and self–
control. The appetites and passions must be held in
subjection to the higher powers of the mind. This
self–discipline is essential to that mental strength
and spiritual insight which will enable us to
understand and to practice the sacred truths of
God’s word. For this reason temperance fi nds its

74. Preparation for the Refreshing
God requires His people to cleanse
themselves from all filthiness of the
flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in
the fear of the Lord. All those who are
indifferent and excuse themselves from
this work, waiting for the Lord to do for
them that which He requires them to do
for themselves, will be found wanting
when the meek of the earth, who have
wrought His judgments, are hid in the
day of the Lord's anger. {CD 33.2}
75. I was shown that if God's people make
no efforts on their part, but wait for the
refreshing to come upon them and
remove their wrongs and correct their
errors; if they depend upon that to
cleanse them from filthiness of the flesh
and spirit, and fit them to engage in the
loud cry of the third angel, they will be
found wanting.{CD 33.3}
76. The refreshing or power of God
comes only on those who have
prepared themselves for it by doing
the work which God bids them,
namely, cleansing themselves from
all filthiness of the flesh and spirit,
perfecting holiness in the fear of
God. {CD 33.3}
77. Appeals to the Hesitant
(R. & H., May 27, 1902) C. H. 578,
579
37. The failure to follow sound
principles has marred the history of
God's people. There has been a continual
backsliding in health reform, and as a
result God is dishonored by a great lack
of spirituality. Barriers have been
erected which would never have been
seen had God's people walked in the
light. {CD 33.4}
78. Appeals to the Hesitant
Shall we who have had such great
opportunities allow the people of the world to
go in advance of us in health reform? Shall we
cheapen our minds and abuse our talents by
wrong eating? Shall we transgress God's holy
law by following selfish practices? Shall our
inconsistency become a byword? Shall we live
such unchristianlike lives that the Saviour will
be ashamed to call us brethren? {CD 33.5}
79. The health reform is a branch of the special work of God for
the benefit of His people. . . . {CD 25.4}
I saw that the reason why God did not hear the prayers of
His servants for the sick among us more fully was, that He
could not be glorified in so doing while they were violating
the laws of health. And I also saw that He designed the
health reform and Health Institute to prepare the way for the
prayer of faith to be fully answered. Faith and good works
should go hand in hand in relieving the afflicted among us,
and in fitting them to glorify God here, and to be saved at the
coming of Christ. {CD 25.5}
80. Many have expected that God would
keep them from sickness merely because
they have asked Him to do so. But God
did not regard their prayers, because
their faith was not made perfect by
works. God will not work a miracle to
keep those from sickness who have no
care for themselves, but are continually
violating the laws of health, and make
no efforts to prevent disease. {CD 26.1}
81. When we do all we can on our part to have
health, then may we expect that the blessed
results will follow, and we can ask God in faith
to bless our efforts for the preservation of
health. He will then answer our prayer, if His
name can be glorified thereby. But let all
understand that they have a work to do. God
will not work in a miraculous manner to
preserve the health of persons who are taking
a sure course to make themselves sick, by
their careless inattention to the laws of health.
{CD 26.1}
82. Those who will gratify their
appetite, and then suffer because
of their intemperance, and take
drugs to relieve them, may be
assured that God will not
interpose to save health and life
which is so recklessly periled. The
cause has produced the effect.
83. Many, as their last resort, follow the
directions in the word of God, and request
the prayers of the elders of the church for
their restoration to health. God does not see
fit to answer prayers offered in behalf of
such, for He knows that if they should be
restored to health, they would again
sacrifice it upon the altar of unhealthy
appetite.
84. R. & H., Feb. 10, 1910
38. It is of great importance that individually we act
well our part, and have an intelligent understanding of
what we should eat and drink, and how we should live to
preserve health. All are being proved to see whether they
will accept the principles of health reform or follow a
course of self-indulgence. {CD 34.3}
85. Let no one think that he can do as he pleases in
the matter of diet. But before all who sit at the
table with you, let it appear that you follow
principle in the matter of eating, as in all other
matters, that the glory of God may be revealed.
You cannot afford to do otherwise; for you have a
character to form for the future immortal life.
Great responsibilities rest upon every human
soul. Let us comprehend these responsibilities,
and bear them nobly in the name of the Lord.
{CD 34.4}
86. To every one who is tempted to indulge appetite I would say,
Yield not to temptation, but confine yourself to the use of
wholesome foods. You can train yourself to enjoy a healthful
diet. The Lord helps those who seek to help themselves; but
when men will not take special pains to follow out the mind and
will of God, how can He work with them? Let us act our part,
working out our salvation with fear and trembling,--with fear
and trembling lest we make mistakes in the treatment of our
bodies, which, before God, we are under obligation to keep in
the most healthy condition possible. {CD 35.1}
87. God is raising up a class to give the loud cry of the third
angel's message. . . . It is Satan's object now to get up
new theories to divert the mind from the true work and
genuine message for this time. He stirs up minds to give
false interpretation of Scripture, a spurious loud cry,
that the real message may not have its effect when it
does come. This is one of the greatest evidences that the
loud cry will soon be heard and the earth will be
lightened with the glory of God.--Letter 20, 1884. {3SM

88. (1867) 1T 546
45. Said the angel, "Abstain from fleshly lusts which war against the
soul." You have stumbled at the health reform. It appears to you to be a
needless appendix to the truth. It is not so; it is a part of the truth. Here is
a work before you which will come closer and be more trying than
anything which has yet been brought to bear upon you. While you hesitate
and stand back, failing to lay hold upon the blessing which it is your
privilege to receive, you suffer loss. You are stumbling over the very
blessing which heaven has placed in your path to make progress less
difficult. Satan presents this before you in the most objectionable light,
that you may combat that which would prove the greatest benefit to you,
which would be for your physical and spiritual health.

should eat for health, persist
in a course that will enfeeble
mind and body.”

125. Disease Definition
Disease is an effort of nature
to free the system from
conditions that result from the
violation of the laws of health.
(PATH p. 37)
126. What are the Laws of Health
Pure air, sunlight, abstemiousness,
rest, exercise, proper diet, the use of
water, trust in divine power
these are the true remedies.
(MH p. 44)
127. The first thing to be done is to ascertain
the true character of the sickness and
then go to work intelligently to remove
the cause. (PATH p. 74 / MH p. 94)
If the harmonious working of the system
has become unbalanced by overwork,
overeating, or other irregularities, do not
endeavor to adjust the difficulties by
adding a burden of poisonous medicines.
(PATH p. 74 / MH p. 94)
128. In the case of sickness, the cause
should be ascertained,
unhealthful conditions should be
changed,
wrong habits corrected,
then nature is to be assisted in her effort
to expel impurities and to re-establish
right conditions in the system. (MH p. 44)
What should one do if they get
sick?
129. The use of natural remedies requires an
amount of care and effort that many are not
willing to give. Nature's process of healing
and upbuilding is gradual, and to the
impatient it seems slow. The surrender of
hurtful indulgences requires sacrifice. (MH p. 44)

131. Do Drugs Cure Disease?
If the harmonious working of the system
has become unbalanced by overwork,
overeating or other irregularities do not
endeavor to adjust the difficulties by
adding a burden of poisonous
medicines. (PATH p. 74 / MH p. 94)
132. Too little attention is generally given to the
preservation of health.
It is far better to prevent disease than to know how
to treat it when contracted. (MH p. 128)
By the use of poisonous drugs, many bring upon
themselves lifelong illness, and many lives are lost
that might be saved by the use of natural methods
of healing. (MH p. 128)
133. Drugs never cure disease;
they only change its form and location. . . .
When drugs are introduced into the
system, for a time they seem to have a
beneficial effect. A change may take place,
but the disease is not cured. It will manifest
itself in some other form. . . .
134. The disease which the drug was given to cure
may disappear, but only to reappear in a new
form, such as skin diseases, ulcers, painful,
diseased joints, and sometimes in a more
dangerous and deadly form. . . . Nature keeps
struggling, and the patient suffers with different
ailments, until there is a sudden breaking down
in her efforts, and death follows.– (HL 243.3)

147. Purpose of Health Reform and MMW
We should ever remember that the object of the
medical missionary work is to point sin-sick
men and women to the Man of Calvary, who
take away the sin of the world. By beholding
Him, they will be changed into His likeness.

The work of health reform is the Lord’s means
for lessening suffering in the world and for
purifying His church. CDF 77
148. The Lord has a special work to be done. This work is not to
be done in accordance with man's planning. Medical
missionary work is to be closely connected with the ministry
of the Word, bound up with the third angel's message, the
last message of mercy and warning to be given to a guilty
world. The work of health reform is to be bound up with the
gospel. These cannot be separated; for God has united them.
When these parts of the work are carried forward on correct
lines, the third angel's message will be given in accordance
with God's purpose. 5MR 134.3
149. God's purpose in giving the third
angel's message to the world is to
prepare a people to stand true to Him
during the investigative judgment. This
is the purpose for which we establish
and maintain our publishing houses,
our schools, our sanitariums, hygienic
restaurants, treatment rooms, and food
factories. This is our purpose in
carrying forward every line of work in
the cause.

150. Noah, Daniel, and Job
The "time of trouble, such as never was," is soon to open upon us;
and we shall need an experience which we do not now possess
and which many are too indolent to obtain. It is often the case
that trouble is greater in anticipation than in reality; but this is
not true of the crisis before us. The most vivid presentation
cannot reach the magnitude of the ordeal. In that time of trial,
every soul must stand for himself before God. "Though Noah,
Daniel, and Job" were in the land, "as I live, saith the Lord God,
they shall deliver neither son nor daughter; they shall but deliver
their own souls by their righteousness." Ezekiel 14:20. {GC

Job 1:1 There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name
was Job; and that man was perfect and upright, and one
that feared God, and eschewed evil.
Job 1:2 And there were born unto him seven sons and
three daughters. Job 1:4 And his sons went and feasted
in their houses, every one his day; and sent and called for
their three sisters to eat and to drink with them.
Job 1:5 And it was so, when the days of their feasting
were gone about, that Job sent and sanctified them, and
rose up early in the morning, and offered burnt offerings
according to the number of them all: for Job said, It may
be that my sons have sinned, and cursed God in their
hearts. Thus did Job continually.

end of the Lord; that the Lord is very pitiful, and of
tender mercy.

We judge of a person's character by the

177. • It is impossible for those who give the reins to appetite to attain to Christian perfection.
The moral sensibilities of your children cannot be easily aroused, unless you are careful
in the selection of their food. Many a mother sets a table that is a snare to her family.
Flesh meats, butter, cheese, rich pastry, spiced foods, and condiments are freely
partaken of by both old and young. These things do their work in deranging the
stomach, exciting the nerves, and enfeebling the intellect. The blood-making organs
cannot convert such things into good blood. The grease cooked in the food renders it
difficult of digestion. The effect of cheese is deleterious. Fine-flour bread does not
impart to the system the nourishment that is to be found in unbolted-wheat bread. Its
common use will not keep the system in the best condition. Spices at first irritate the
tender coating of the stomach, but finally destroy the natural sensitiveness of this
delicate membrane. The blood becomes fevered, the animal propensities are aroused,
while the moral and intellectual powers are weakened, and become servants to the
baser passions. The mother should study to set a simple yet nutritious diet before her
family. {CD 236.2}
178.
179. MORAL FITNESS
• You need clear, energetic minds, in order to appreciate the exalted
character of the truth, to value the atonement, and to place the right
estimate upon eternal things. If you pursue a wrong course, and
indulge in wrong habits of eating, and thereby weaken the
intellectual powers, you will not place that high estimate upon
salvation and eternal life which will inspire you to conform your life
to the life of Christ; you will not make those earnest, self-sacrificing
efforts for entire conformity to the will of God, which His word
requires and which are necessary to give you a moral fitness for the
finishing touch of immortality. {CD 47.1}

190. FAR AHEAD
The peculiar people whom God is
purifying unto himself, to be translated to heaven without
seeing death, should not be behind others in good works In
their efforts to cleanse themselves from all filthiness of the
flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God, they
should be as far ahead of any other class of people on the
earth as their profession is more exalted than that of others
Editor's Notes
1) Appetite2) Love of the world3) PresumptionPresumption:But faith is in no sense allied to presumption. Only he who has true faith is secure against presumption. FOR PRESUMPTION IS SATAN'S COUNTERFEIT OF FAITH. Faith claims God's promises, and brings forth fruit in obedience. PRESUMPTION ALSO CLAIMS THE PROMISES, BUT USES THEM AS SATAN DID, TO EXCUSE TRANSGRESSION. Faith would have led our first parents to trust the love of God, and to obey His commands. PRESUMPTION LED THEM TO TRANSGRESS HIS LAW, BELIEVING THAT HIS GREAT LOVE WOULD SAVE THEM FROM THE CONSEQUENCE OF THEIR SIN. It is not faith that claims the favor of Heaven without complying with the conditions on which mercy is to be granted. Genuine faith has its foundation in the promises and provisions of the Scriptures.{Desire of Aages , page 126.1,2}
