of Radiology, Dr. AppaRao Mukkamala has worked as a
physician in Flint, Michigan, for over 40 years. Dr. AppaRao
Mukkamala balances his professional pursuits with his
various charitable endeavors and activities with community
organizations, including the Chinmaya Mission of Flint,
where he formerly served as president.
One of the more than 300 Chinmaya Mission centers
worldwide, the Chinmaya Mission of Flint was founded in
1990. It promotes Vedanta philosophy and the teachings of
the late Hindu spiritual leader Swami Chinmayananda,
whose devotees established the Chinmaya Mission in 1953.

In addition to conducting Bala Vihar programs for
youth and weekly Vedanta study groups for adults, the
Flint center oversees a variety of cultural, educational,
and charitable activities within the local community.
Each year, the organization celebrates Peace Day,
which is held on Mahatma Gandhi’s birthday, by
promoting principles of nonviolence and overseeing
projects to beautify Flint’s downtown area. In the past,
the Chinmaya Mission of Flint also has operated free
medical clinics to help individuals without health
insurance.
