The Swedish national Data Service (SND) were in the original ARIADNE project and learned how to organise and classify their data for both the Portal and their own web service. Able to display map, marker and polygon information now. Use Elasticsearch, AAT and Periodo.
3. What is SND
• National infrastructure for making research data accessible,
nationally and internationally.
• Consortium of seven universities, main office at University of
Gothenburg.
• Financed by the Research Council and the Consortium
• Originates in SSD (Swedish Social Science Data Service)
• More than 30 years of experience in documenting, disseminating
and curating digital research data
4. The consortium
• Cooperation between seven
universities who contribute
with expertise from different
scientific fields or domains

Register-based research
University of Gothenburg
Humanities, Social Sciences,
Public Health / Epidemiology
Lund University
Materials science, environmental
and climate data, multidisciplinary
population-based research
Uppsala University

5. What does SND do?
• Support open access to research data through education,
assistance and technical facilities.
• The basis is a web-based research data catalogue
with detailed data descriptions and the option to directly
download or order data.
• Building a distributed uniform system to make data FAIR
together with a group of national universities and research
institutes (SND-network).

8. New to archaeology
• Until august 2011 no knowledge of:
– Structure
– Metadata
– Documentation
– Storage
– File formats
– Etc…
9. Early experiences
• Internal management system adapted to
social science data, specializing in surveys
• Needed software to view and further
uniform the structure of the metadata
• New type of material:
– How is the material documented
– What information in the files can be
• Used to document and describe the data
• Extracted
• Used as search criteria in our web catalogue
10. Major changes…
• Adaptation to the concept “Geographical information”:
§ Coordinates
§ bounding box
§ polygons
§ administrative areas in hierchies (church parish, civil
parish, provinces, counties, municipalities)
§ map search
• Time periods
• Keywords
• Direct download without registration
12. • Feb 2013 – Feb 2017
• Technical partner (Building portal…)
• Content provider (GIS-data)
• 6 out of 17 work packages
• Adaptations of data at SND
13. New ideas, new solutions
• By contributing to the development of the
ARIADNE portal,
• … we found new ideas and technologies for
the organization of our local search portal
14. Elasticsearch
• Search engine based on the Lucene library
• Multitenant-capable full-text search engine
• HTTP web interface
• Schema-free JSON documents
• Developed in Java
21. Impact
• New portal search engine based on the same
techniques as ARIADNE’s portal
– Fully operative early 2017, with Elasticsearch, Map
search, timeperiods, …
– Better adapted to the scope, types and presentation of
data archaeologists and historians are looking for
– Increase in usefulness will bring more data, also for the
ARIADNEplus portal
• Also we have worked on the vocabularies used at
SND: Mapping to AAT, PeriodO (time periods)
