2. Paint:-
Paint are thick viscous syrup preparations containing one or more active
medicaments of vegetable or mineral origin intended for application to the
skin or mucosa membranes.
3. Aim:- To prepare and dispense 20ml of gum paint (4%) with glycerine as
medium
Requirement:-
Measuring cylinder, conical measures, china dish, hot plate, glass mortar and
pestle, amber colour dispensing bottle with lid. dropper, weighing machine, glu,
label
Ingredients:-
Tannic acid-
Glycerin-
4. Calculation:-
4% tannic acid means-
4gm tannic acid in 100 ml of glycerine
i.e.
100ml of glycerine is required to dissolve 4gm of tannic acid
1ml 4/100…..
20ml… 4×20/100=0.8gm..
5. 1.Weigh the required quantity of tannic acid (0.8g) into glass mortar
2.Take 20ml of glycerin in a china dish and boil it on a hot plate up to a temperature
of 140-160OC
3.Add small quantity(5ml) of glycerine to mortar and mix the contents.
4.Now add rest of the glycerine (15ml) to the mortar to make the preparation 20ml.
5.Mixed the contents thoroughly using pestle and allow it for cooling.
6.Transfer the formed paint to amber coloured dispensing bottle and covered with
red cap.

7. Pharmacological role of ingredients:-
Tannic acid:- Acts as astringent and make the surface rough by precipitating the
superficial protein & prevents pathogen invasion.
Glycerin:-
• Acts as sweetening & It make the preparation palatable.
• Acts as demulcent agents. It tends to reduce local inflammation due to its
hygroscopic property.
• Due to its viscus nature it stays on the affected area for longer time to produce
its effect.
8. -:Indication:-
1. As a mouth wash in pathological condition of mucous membrane and gum.
e.g.-gingivitis, stomatitis
2.Soothing effect, cooling sensation and refreshness in oral cavity when rinsed in
halitosis.
3.Also acts as local haemostatic to prevent bleeding gums in pyorrhea
4.Bleeding piles/hemorrhoids because of its local haemostatic action. Available as
tannic suppository
5.Alkaloidal poisoning:- precipitate ingested alkaloids and tannates.
