Tactile Astronomy
We are at the dawn of 3D printing and just beginning to realize how it will fundamentally change our lives. Recent improvements in technology are making 3D printers a feasible tool for consumers to acquire. Museums all over the world are digitizing their collections and this opens a creative chapter for 3D printing: We can make science accesible to new audiences by augmenting sensory experiences! I am working on a project called Tactile Astronomy to bring Astronomy via 3D Printing as a tactile experience for blind youth. I believe it’s time to open the final frontier for all. This project has been inspired by the July 2014 release by NASA of their STL library for public use. I am actively looking for supporters and sponsors at present. In short order, I will be designing lesson plans, developing a website/ repository for the educational materials and 3D printing the objects. The project is in its early stages. I believe it provides a compelling innovation and CSR story to it along with potential brand activation for companies. The vision I have is to make 3D printers commonplace in each classroom across New Zealand. The Astronomy lessons can be a proof-of-concept and also a minimum-viable product in what can become a subscription service for lesson plans -and printable objects- where schools can augment interest in STEM at early ages.
