Manufacturing plays a very strategic
role in an organization, especially to
build competitive advantage and
improve performance.

With rapid changes in technology,
customer needs and globalization,
manufacturing itself is constantly
transforming and evolving.
What is Green manufacturing?

“To prevent pollution and save energy through the
discovery and development of new knowledge that
reduces and/or eliminates the use or generation of
hazardous substances in the design, manufacture, and
application of chemical products or processes.”
                                               • By
The center for Green Manufacturing University of
Alabama defines the goal of green manufacturing as
What is Green manufacturing?

It is a system that integrates product and process design
issues with issues of manufacturing, planning and
control in such a manner as to
identify, quantify, assess, and manage the flow of
environmental waste with the goal of reducing and
ultimately minimizing environmental impact while also
          trying to maximize resource efficiency.

                                      • Definition
Why Green Manufacturing is so important?
Due to the recent global climate, humans have started to realize the
vulnerability of nature and the disasters it may bring as response of our
negligence. The following are the recent stresses on our environment

         • As much fresh water has been withdrawn in the last 30
1 years as in the last three centuries

         • The rate of increase in atmospheric carbon dioxide
between 1970 and 2000 is nearly double that between
   2 1960 and 1970.

         • Carbon emissions have increased by more than 1.5
   3 times since 1970

         • Carbon emissions have increased by more than 1.5
   4 times since 1970

         • Industrial waste. “Minimize at source”.

Benefits

• The goal of Green Manufacturing is to reduce
  waste to zero.
• This will definitely improves the ecology and
  stop pollution.

    1.Environmental
        Benefits
Benefits
 • The company is said to have social responsibility and
this reputation means a lot to the company
 • The society now is fonder to environmental friendly
   products
 • Zero waste policy

           2.Company
             Benefits
Benefits

• Green Manufacturing spins off a lot of research
  and development projects.
• Each of these projects enhances our technology.

     3.Technological
         Benefits
Implementation

• Production process here involves the product
  design and process design.
• Waste reduction.
• Recyclable materials should be used.
• Reduce wastes in energy.

       1.Production
          Process
Implementation

• ISO 14000 environmental management standards
  exist to help organizations.
• ISO 14001 is an internationally accepted
  specification for an environmental management
  system (EMS).
      2.International
     Organization for
     Standardization
Implementation

• WEEE - Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment.
• RoHS - Restriction of Hazardous Substances.
• ELV -End of Life Vehicle directives.

         3.Regulations
Challenges

               Long Term Effort

                 Investment

             Increase in Production
                      Cost

                   Engineers
Example
  Panasonic's ECONAVI - the intelligent
eco-sensor feature further reducing energy
consumption in air conditioners by up to
                   30%

                     Increased Energy Savings
Fuel Efficiency & Green Highways

Flexible Asphalt Absorbs Energy – Rigid Concrete Doesn’t
The charts show a range of potential annual
fuel savings and reductions in pollutant
emissions that could be achieved if the US
Highway was paved with concrete rather
than asphalt.
