4. INTRODUCTION
Libraries are only next in importance to schools, colleges
and universities as means of educating the public. A library is a
store-house of books-books of all kinds and on all subjects
under the sun. A good modern library usually subscribes to
practically all the important newspapers and periodicals. Books,
newspapers and periodicals are the main features of a library
and they represent the endeavours, achievements and glory of
writers, statesmen, scientists, philosophers and saints.
LIBRARY
A library is an organized collection of sources of information
and similar resources, made accessible to a defined community
for reference or borrowing. It provides physical or digital access
to material and may be a physical building or room, or a virtual
space, or both. Science library is an essential part of the
equipment. Pupils must read extra books other than text books
for gaining general knowledge. The library books supplement
what has been taught in the class. The book must be such as to
provoke thinking and discussion, to develop interest in matters
of science, to stimulate further reading, to help to articulate
and elucidate scientific concepts and problems, to suggest

contributions of science.
There must be books on various branches of
science, on invention and discoveries, biographies, on hobbies,
reference books and books on methods. The book must be
accurate and authoritative. The science library should be
attached to the science teacher. Science teacher should select
for the library suitable books covering a wide range of topics.
SCHOOL LIBRARY
A school library is a library within a school where students,
staff, and often, parents of a public or private school have
access to a variety of resources. The goal of the school library
media center is to ensure that all members of the school
community have equitable access to books and reading, to
information, and to information technology. A school library
media center uses all types of media is automated, all utilizes
the internet for information gathering. School libraries are
distinct from public libraries because they serve as learner-oriented
laboratories which support, extend, and individualize
the school’s curriculum. A school library serves as the center
and coordinating agency for all material used in the school.

6. The school library exists to provide a range of learning
opportunities for both large and small groups as well as
individuals with a focus on intellectual content, information
literacy and the learner. In addition to classroom visits with
collaborating teachers, the school library also serves as a place
for students to do independent work, use computers,
equipment and research materials; to host special events such
as author visits and book clubs; and for tutoring and testing.
Collaboration is important among school
librarians, teachers, and parents. There is a need to create a
culture where collaboration is the foundation for how our
schools work and operate. School librarians can help take a lead
by modeling this behavior as they work with teachers to ensure
communication is ongoing during the school year.
CLASSROOM LIBRARY
Classroom library is a popular resource in most elementary
schools today. These small teacher-managed libraries offer
students ready access to books of many genres and reading
levels. Organizing the library with care serves a classroom
teacher and students well throughout the year.

7. Furnishing a classroom library
1) Sizable and attractive book shelves should be provided for
the books.
2) Open shelves invite learners to browse but a closed shelves
give more protection to books.
3) While planning the shelf space, thought should be given to
future space requirements.
4) Inclined shelving is especially advantageous for the display
of magazines and pamphlets.
5) Provide internet facility in the library.
6) Filling cabinets may be provided for the storage of
pamphlets not in display.
7) A special bulletin board for the library area can be used to
display pertinent clippings, small pamphlets, circulars,
jackets of new acquired books.
8) A colourful bulletin board attracts pupils to the reading
area.
9) The classroom library should have atleast one table and
seven or eight chairs.
10) If there is table space for six or more pupils, reading
center can be used for committee work.
