4. INTRODUCTION
Text books being essential part of science curricula play a key role in effective
teaching and learning. Therefore, it is important that these text books do not prove to
be mere suppliers of information and facts but also enable the student to understand,
appreciate concepts and principles and their relevance in our daily life. Text books
should stimulate reflective thinking and cultivate in students, scientific attitude.
4
5. Use of the text books
1. It is used as a ready science of authoritative information.
2. A source of factual material in the preparation of assignments both for the
teacher and pupils.
3. To provide motivation by attraction presentation and self-testing exercises.
4. A handy secure of illustration of superior teaching value which serve as visual
aid for the understanding of facts and principles.
5. To supply stimulating exercises, numerical problems and other devices which
would serves as means of applying the knowledge again.
6. To help the pupils improving the subjects systematic and living it in memory.
7. To give the biographical and historical reading material to realize the cultural
value of science.
Criteria for selection of a good science text book
In most schools, the science teacher is usually called upon to decide upon the
book to be adopted by the school. In many science classes more than one text book is
available to the students. Frequently the science teacher is asked to recommend a
science text or several science books for purchase. George.G .Mallionson suggests
use of the following criteria in selecting a text book for junior high school science.
1. The level of complexity of the text corresponding to intellectual level of the
student.
2. The style of writing.
3. The nature of illustrations.
4. The suggested supplementary activities.
5. The provision for individual difference.
6. The clarity and organization of material.
The level of reading difficulty, especially in terms of vocabulary, should be
carefully evaluated for different classes, Frequently a more advanced text book is
made desirable by a science teacher for most of her students. Yet this same text may
be too advance for one of her classes. Occasionally, it may be desirable to use more
than one text within a given grade to provide for the differences in individual
students.
The literary style has much to do with the readability of a book. Although it is
difficult to judge a style, some important points to be noted are:
a. Length of sentences
b. Direction of sentences
c. Number of ideas per sentence
d. Use of lead sentences for paragraphs
e. Presents or absence of irrelevant
5
6. thoughts and continuity of thought. The quality and quantity of illustrations need
consideration. Photographs should be clearly reproduced. Diagrams should be
carefully drawn and attractive. Most text books today are profusely illustrated.
Vogel’s Criteria of Selection
It is a kind of score card, designed to speed up the process of evaluation, is the
“Spot Check” method illustrated by Vogel Louis F known as “Vogal Spot Check
Evaluation Scale”. Cited in Thunder and Colette, on this score card, each item has
been assigned a maximum value of two points. The value of each item under each
head is totaled against the part score. The part score of each head are then counted
and the overall value is written against the space for partial score.
