4. Why grow vertically?
ā¢enable to grow veggies without bending or getting on your knees,
avoiding back pain
ā¢space saving especially where there is no land or limited area
ā¢can be moved from outside to indoors especially during bad
weather
ā¢easy to set up, low maintenance, easy to clean
ā¢keep veggies off the ground, protecting plants fron soil-borne
pests/diseases
ā¢can be moved to places to take advantage of sunlight & air circulation
ā¢soilless culture means no or fewer weeds in medium
ā¢can avoid prying eyes of intruders
ā¢easier harvesting
5. Limitations/considerations
ā¢need a sunny wall space, most veggies need
minimum of 6hrs sunlight/day
ā¢garden should not be taller than you can
ā¢support system must be strong enough to handle
the weight
ā¢garden should be near source of water
ā¢garden should be away from trees or shrubs which
will shade or compete with garden for sunlight
6. Advantages of having a garden at home (balcony, terrace, garage)
ā¢filters noise & dust
ā¢helps cool the air flowing into your home through open windows
ā¢provides pleasure by enhancing views from the inside
ā¢positive impact on the environment = mitigating urban heat island
effect
ā¢makes an underutilized space into a cherished outdoor room
ā¢pleasure of preparing meals from vegetables harvested in your own
garden
Where to place vertical garden
ā¢balconies, veranda, terrace
ā¢garage
ā¢rooftop/deck
ā¢wall
ā¢side of fence
ā¢green house
7. Design of vertical garden depends on
ā¢available material
ā¢space
ā¢local preferences
ā¢creativity & imagination of the users
Crops that can be grown in vertical garden
ā¢vegetables
ā¢herbs
ā¢ornamentals
ā¢medicinal plant
