5. Antique has rich mineral deposits. Its mountains yield coal, silica, copper, marble, and clay. Semi-precious stones such as turquoise, amethyst, opal, jade, agate and jasper are scattered along the Sibalom and Tipuloan Rivers. The municipalities of Libertad and Pandan have reserves of 4.131 billion metric tons of good quality marble. 45. The Pre-Spanish natives of Antique had tribal government ruled by chieftains. They traded with neighboring countries like China and Malaya. They had their civilization blended with Negrito, Indonesian and Malay cultures enriched by cultural influence from India, China and Japan. It is believed that the Spaniards found their way to Antique immediately after they established themselves in Oton, Iloilo. The Antiquenos resisted the invasion but in the end accepted Spanish rule, Christianity, the Spanish Colonial System and at the same time absorbed the social, cultural and educational system of the Spaniards.

49. Southwestern Visayans, or Karay-as are the ninth largest Filipino ethnic group. The name of their tribe was derived from the word "iraya", which means "upstream". Karay-as live mainly in the western half of the island of Panay, where mountain ranges predominate. They are also called Hantik, hence the name of their province, Antique. Many of them have intermingled with the lowland Hiligaynons. They engage primarily in farming, fishing, and basketry. About half of the Karay-as are Catholics and the other half are Protestants.

A re-enactment of the arrival of the ten Bornean datus to Barangay Malandog in Hamtic and the subsequent occupation of their landing site, it is the traditional and spiritual essence of the Binirayan Festival. The Biray Kang Barangay itself is a parade of boats, traditionally called balangay, from the port of San Jose de Buenavista to the shores of Malandog. The dramatized voyage is followed by the pangalaw (merrymaking and feasting) and the lighting of the Eternal Flame of Freedom marker at Malandog. At 5:00 PM, the participants will go on a torch parade to the EBJ Freedom park. This spectacle of lights signifies the transfer of leadership from Datu Sumakwel, the leader of the ten datus, to Antique’s present-day leaders. The Biray is being sponsored by the Provincial Tourism Office, Paranubliun Antique, Inc. and the local government unit of Brgy. Malandog.
