THE BIBLE FAST FORWARD
Putting the Pieces of the Bible Together
Week 3
OUR PURPOSE
To give a practical, historical overview of the Old
Testament emphasizing the unfolding plan of salvation
as God reveals it through His covenants with the nation
of Israel, and the fulfillment of those covenants in the
person of Jesus of Nazareth.

1. The Call of Abraham
2. The Birth of Isaac
3. Joseph in Egypt
4. The Exodus

THE MAIN THEME
of the Bible is:
RULERSHIP
GOD’S STEWARD
over the Earth
Man is
THE PROBLEM
Man wants to live outside of God’s
rulership and authority.
Man has rejected God’s rulership over
his life, and in doing so brings upon
ourselves a problem that only God can
solve.
Week 3 - The Bible Fast Forward
Week 3 - The Bible Fast Forward
WHAT RESULTED
FROM OUR
DISOBEDIENCE?
1. GOD’S WRATH
We have angered God and become
His enemies
2. WE OWE GOD
We have transgressed His holy law
and are in His debt
3. BONDAGE TO SATAN
We walk in the ways of a world that
is opposed to God
4. SPIRITUAL DEATH
We are unplugged from the

life of God.
MAN’S PLIGHT
1. Our relationship with God has been severed.
2. Our relationships with each other have been warped.
3. Our relationship with creation has been
compromised.
4. Our individual souls have been corrupted.
with every new generation
AFTER EDEN,

MAN GETS WORSE
GENESIS
6:5
GENESIS
11:1-9
MAN’S PLIGHT WORSENS
1. God thwarts their plans and scatters men abroad.
2. God confuses their words (and creates languages).
3. Limited spread of truth and no holiness.
4. There was no sign of salvation from anywhere.
THE CALL
of Abraham
GOD’S 3-PHASE PLAN
For rescuing mankind
1. God sets apart one man.
2. God promises to make a nation

from that man.
3. God commissions that man, and nation to
be a blessing to the world.
THE ABRAHAMIC COVENANT
Now the Lord said to Abram, “Go forth from your country, and from
your relatives, and from your father’s house, to the land which I will

show you.

And I will make you a great nation, and I will bless you and make
your name great, and so you shall be a blessing.

And I will bless those who bless you, and the one who curses you I
will curse. And in you all the families of the earth will be blessed.”
GENESIS 12:1-3
GOD’S PROMISES
For Abraham’s Obedience
“I will make you a great nation”.
“I will bless you and make your
name great”
“I will bless those who bless you
and curse those who curse you.”
1. People
2. Land
3. Government
4. Prosperity
5. Protection
THE BIRTH
of Isaac
WHY ISAAC ONLY
and not the line of Ishmael?
1. Isaac’s birth was a supernatural sign from God.
2. God’s choice was based on election

instead of tradition.
3. Protection from syncretism (mixing with
other religions and their foreign gods).

JOSEPH IN EGYPTand the Sovereignty of God
WHY WERE
THE JEWS SAFER

IN EGYPT

THAN WITH THE
CANAANITES?
THE SOVEREIGNTY OF GOD
during the captivity of His people to Egypt
1. It provided preservation from the upcoming famine.
3. There was absolutely no intermarriage and
therefore no syncretism with Egyptian religion.
2. Egyptians were prejudiced and separatist.
JOSEPH
in Egypt
WHAT DOES IT MEAN
THAT GOD IS

SOVEREIGN?
JOSEPH IN EGYPTand the Sovereignty of God
1. The youngest and most-loved son of Jacob
3. God gave him a prophetic dream of future rulership,
and his brothers rejected him and sold him into slavery.
2. Born during a time of famine

JOSEPH, GOD’S WILLand the Sovereignty of God
God’s Moral Will God’s Sovereign Will
What God would
prefer
(no way, buster)(this can be thwarted)
What God will
accomplish
JOSEPH IN EGYPTand the Sovereignty of God
When Joseph’s brothers saw that their
father was dead, they said, “Perhaps
Joseph will hate us, and may actually
repay us for all the evil which we did to
him.” So they sent messengers to
Joseph, saying, “Before your father
died he commanded, saying, GENESIS

JOSEPH IN EGYPTand the Sovereignty of God
“Thus you shall say to Joseph: ‘I beg
you, please forgive the trespass of your
brothers and their sin; for they did evil
to you.” ’ Now, please, forgive the
trespass of the servants of the God of
your father.” And Joseph wept when
they spoke to him. GENESIS
50:17-18
JOSEPH IN EGYPTand the Sovereignty of God
Then his brothers also went and fell
down before his face and said,
“Behold, we are your servants.” Joseph
said to them, “Do not be afraid, for am
I in the place of God?”
GENESIS
50:17-18
JOSEPH IN EGYPTand the Sovereignty of God
As for you, you meant evil against me,
but God meant it for good in order to
bring about this present result, to save
many people alive.
GENESIS
50:20
and the Sovereignty of God
God’s Moral Will God’s Sovereign Will
“As for you, you meant evil
against me”
(God used it to accomplish His
rulership and sovereignty)
God did not thwart their evil
desires against Joseph
but God meant it for good
in order to bring about
this present result, to save
many people alive.
JOSEPH, GOD’S WILL
1. GOD ALLOWS EVIL
God dignifies man and allows us to
choose what is truly in our hearts.
2. GOD USES EVIL
The presence of evil does not mean
God’s sovereignty has ceased.
3. CONFIDENCE DESPITE EVIL
We can still trust that God is
sovereign even when days are dark
THE EXODUS
GOD IS AT WORK
through the Abrahamic Covenant
Even in exile, God blesses his people
Despite being in slavery, nation
grows from 70 people to
between 600k and 2 million
1. People
2. Land
3. Government
4. Prosperity
5. Protection
GOD IS AT WORK
through the Abrahamic Covenant
God preserves his people in
Egypt for 400 years.
God protects them through

10 nasty plagues (frogs, gnats, flies,
pestilence, boils, hail, locusts,
darkness and death of the first-born)
1. People
2. Land
3. Government
4. Prosperity
5. Protection
GOD IS AT WORK
through the Abrahamic Covenant
Even in exile, God continues
to prosper His people.

4. Prosperity
5. Protection
GOD IS AT WORK
through the Abrahamic Covenant
And I will grant this people favor in the sight of the Egyptians,
and it shall be that when you go, you shall not go empty
handed. But every woman shall ask of her neighbor and the
woman who lives in her house, articles of silver and articles of
gold, and clothing, and you will put them on your sons and
daughters. Thus you will plunder the Egyptians.
GENESIS
50:15-16
THEN…
SUPERNATURAL
PROTECTION
The Exodus is God’s
faithfulness to His
covenant by way of
Then they said to Moses, ―Is it because there were no graves in
Egypt that you have taken us away to die in the wilderness? Why
have you dealt with us in this way, bringing us out of Egypt? Is
this not the word that we spoke to you in Egypt, saying, “Leave us
alone that we may serve the Egyptians‘? For it would have been
better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the wilderness!”
EXODUS 14:11-12
But Moses said to the people,
“Do not fear! Stand by and see the salvation of the Lord which
He will accomplish for you today. For the Egyptians whom you
have seen today, you will never see them again forever.”
EXODUS 14:13
So Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and the sea returned
to its normal state at daybreak, while the Egyptians were fleeing
right into it. Then the Lord overthrew the Egyptians in the midst of
the sea. The waters returned and covered the chariots and the
horsemen, even Pharaoh‘s entire army that had gone into the sea
after them. Not even one of them remained. But the sons of Israel
walked on dry land through the midst of the sea .
EXODUS 14:27-29
WHY IS GOD
so faithful to the Abrahamic Covenant?
For this time I will send all My plagues on you
and your servants and your people, so that you
may know that there is no one like Me in all the
earth....But, indeed, for this reason I have
allowed you to remain, in order to show you
My power and in order to proclaim My name
through all the earth. EXODUS

WHAT PURPOSES
did the Mosaic Covenant (Law) accomplish?
1. It provided governmental structure
and cultural distance from the Gentiles.
2. It restrained evil by punishing
evildoers.
3. It gave instruction on righteous,
fruitful living.
WHAT PURPOSES
did the Mosaic Law accomplish?
5. It is a “tutor” to lead us to God’s
mercy.
6. It provided a means of

salvation by grace, not works.
4. It helped to define sin.

TITHING
Tithing (“tenth-ing”) was a system of taxing that provided revenue
for the government and also sustained the priests and the temple
(there was no separation between church and state). A Christian
should no more go to Malachi for instruction on tithing than he
should go to Leviticus for instruction on animal sacrifice. Tithing is
not an obligation for Christians. Instead, freewill giving is the
standard. (2 Cor. 9:7).

  • 38. JOSEPH IN EGYPTand the Sovereignty of God “Thus you shall say to Joseph: ‘I beg you, please forgive the trespass of your brothers and their sin; for they did evil to you.” ’ Now, please, forgive the trespass of the servants of the God of your father.” And Joseph wept when they spoke to him. GENESIS 50:17-18
  • 39. JOSEPH IN EGYPTand the Sovereignty of God Then his brothers also went and fell down before his face and said, “Behold, we are your servants.” Joseph said to them, “Do not be afraid, for am I in the place of God?” GENESIS 50:17-18
  • 40. JOSEPH IN EGYPTand the Sovereignty of God As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good in order to bring about this present result, to save many people alive. GENESIS 50:20
  • 41. and the Sovereignty of God God’s Moral Will God’s Sovereign Will “As for you, you meant evil against me” (God used it to accomplish His rulership and sovereignty) God did not thwart their evil desires against Joseph but God meant it for good in order to bring about this present result, to save many people alive. • 51. SUPERNATURAL PROTECTION The Exodus is God’s faithfulness to His covenant by way of
  • 52. Then they said to Moses, ―Is it because there were no graves in Egypt that you have taken us away to die in the wilderness? Why have you dealt with us in this way, bringing us out of Egypt? Is this not the word that we spoke to you in Egypt, saying, “Leave us alone that we may serve the Egyptians‘? For it would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the wilderness!” EXODUS 14:11-12
  • 53. But Moses said to the people, “Do not fear! Stand by and see the salvation of the Lord which He will accomplish for you today. For the Egyptians whom you have seen today, you will never see them again forever.” EXODUS 14:13

  • 80. Tithing (“tenth-ing”) was a system of taxing that provided revenue for the government and also sustained the priests and the temple (there was no separation between church and state). A Christian should no more go to Malachi for instruction on tithing than he should go to Leviticus for instruction on animal sacrifice. Tithing is not an obligation for Christians. Instead, freewill giving is the standard. (2 Cor. 9:7). - Greg Koukl
