Sarri's Chelsea Positional Play - by Branko NIkovski
1.
2. Chelsea's Positional Play
Chelsea's Positional Play is a dynamical-zonal structure.
The dynamical-zonal structure offers not only a positional
possession, but also defending while attacking.
What I mean by that ? - The structure is constructed in a way
that is always ready to stop possible future offensive
transition of the opponent.
Any Positional play, for being effective , should contain :
Possession [not sterile] + Elevated Technical Abilities
[Pass+Control] + Accurate pass trajectories.
3. 1. Construction Zone
1.1 Jorginho drops down between Rudiger and Luiz [they're
wide].
1.2 Azpilicueta and Alonso offer width , but they aren't very high.
1.3 Kante and Kovacic drop down in the half-spaces offering the
support to bring out the ball
1.3.1 Moving wide in the half-spaces, attracting the opponent's
midfielders, they create a central hole for verticalization till the
Creative Zone [where Morata drops down, or Pedro and Hazard
move centrally in the half-spaces].
4. A. When they construct on the left side through Jorginho or
Luiz :
A1. Kovacic drops down in the lx half-space [creating space for verticalization
in the Creative Zone , where Hazard moves centrally in the lx half-space]
A2. Hazard leaves the flank and moves centrally in the lx half-space expecting
eventual verticalization.
A3. Alonso attacks in width the space left by Hazard, offering a diagonal option
in depth and overlaps.
A4. Morata drops down centrally expecting eventual verticalization and one-
two passes with Hazard or changing the game play on the other side for Kante
and Pedro.
5.
6. B. When the construct on the right side through Jorginho,
Rudigiger and Azpilicueta :
B1. Azpilicueta is not playing high and attacking minded as Alonso on the other
side. He helps to construct, acting as helper of the playmaker [Jorginho]
B2. The objective is to bring the ball in the Creative Zone's rx half-space or
centrally.
B3. Kante drops laterally passing with Azpilicueta and Rudiger, with the
objective Pedro to move centrally in the rx half-space.
B4. The short passes help to create a verticalization [often by Jorginho] for
Pedro in the rx half-space.
B5. Morata drops down centrally expecting eventual verticalization and one-
two passes with Pedro or changing the game play on the other side for Kovacic
and Hazard.
7.
8. C. When they construct centrally through Jorginho and one of
the midfielders :
C1. Pedro and Hazard move centrally in the half-spaces expecting a
verticalization.
C2. Alonso attacks in width the space left by Hazard, offering a diagonal option
in depth and overlaps.
C3. Morata drops down centrally expecting eventual verticalization and one-
two passes with Pedro and Hazard and one of the midfielders [that is not
helping to Jorginho]
C4. The midfielder that is not helping Jorginho in the construction [Kante or
Kovacic] attacks the half-space is depth expecting diagonal long balls or
verticalization or second balls.
9.
10. 2. Creative Zone
2.1 A central rhomboideus for passes behind the opponent's line
2.1.1 Hazard moves centrally acting as Trequartista behind the line with a liberty for creativity.
2.1.2 Kante and Kovacic attack the half-spaces
2.2.1 Pedro moves centrally between the opponent's LB and LCB attacking in depth acting as
second striker
2.2.2 Morata moves a little bit to the left side between the opponent's RB and the RCB
attacking in diagonal bringing with him the RCB
2.2.2.1 Morata's movement leaves the opponent's RB alone attacked by :
2.2.2.1.1 by Kovacic in depth through the lx half-space
2.2.2.1.2 by Alonso in width
2.3.1 Alonso is width and high occupping the lateral space left by Hazard. [when the ball is on
the right side , he drops down holding the defensive line]
2.3.2 Azpilicueta stays near Rudiger and Luiz, helping Jorginho, covering Kante when he
attacks in depth the rx half-space.
11.
12. A. When they attack through the left :
A1. One two touches combinations between Alonso+
Hazard+Kovacic+Jorginho..... with Luiz as support.
A2. Often through the overlaps , Alonso cross in the penalty area,
where Morata attacks the first post, Kante centrally and Pedro the
second post.
A3. Azpilicueta-Rudiger-Luiz + Jorginho are expecting eventual
second balls and preventions for eventual opponent's offensive
transition.
13.
14. B. When they attack through the right :
B1. One two touches combiations between Pedro+Azpilicueta+
+Jorginho+Hazard+Kante.
B2. Pedro and Kante attack in depth
B3. Morata expects a diagonal ball by Azpilicueta [Conte's tactic]
B4. Change of play on the other side by Jorginho for:
B4.1 Kovacic , who attacks in depth the space left by Morata
B4.2 Alonso, who attacks in width
B5 Azpilicueta-Rudiger-Luiz + Jorginho are expecting eventual second
balls and preventions for eventual opponent's offensive transition.
15.
16. Chelsea prefers to control the space through ball possession
[some other teams prefer to control it through defensive density].
Sarri’s aesthetical approach offers not only great football and
amusement for the fans , but also an enjoyment for the players.
The positional play is a simple play, but as one Dutch Genius used
to say : playing simple is the most difficult thing in the world.
