This document provides an agenda and information for a fall 2012 head tutor training session for America Reads/America Counts at Duke University. It includes introductions of ARAC staff, an overview of the schools served, policies and procedures covered in the handbook, details about office hours, the transition to online applications, time sheets, team meetings, evaluations, reflection logs, head tutor meetings, goals and fears exercise, literacy simulation, and dates for new tutor applications and trainings.
6. TELEPHONE PICTIONARY
Each person will get a stack of 10 index
cards.
On the top index card write a sentence or
phrase.
Ex: “People love cheese.”
When I say PASS you will then pass your
stack of index cards to your left.
7. On the back of the index card draw a
picture of the phrase you have in front
of you.
Ex:
Pass index card stack to your left again
with picture facing up. On blank index
card write what you think the picture is
saying.
8. We will keep going till you get back to
your original statement.
DO NOT LOOK AT ORIGINAL

Remember when writing statement
always use new card. Pictures go on
back of used card.

16. TEAM MEETINGS
• Site Specific Teams
• Each Head Tutor will have a group of
approximately 10 tutors
• Hour long meeting once a month
• Each month meetings also held by
Girija and/or Brittany that are more
skills based.
18. TUTOR EVALUATIONS OF
TEAM MEETINGS
• Tutors complete evaluation at the end of
the team meeting
• Do not have them put their name
• After collecting the evaluations they will
be used in a post evaluation that you
complete
21. REFLECTION LOGS
• Qualtrics instead of tutor portal
• Brittany will now check logs and
respond
• Bi-weekly instead of weekly
• Your job to remind tutors to complete
logs!

• Once a semester
• Hour long meeting
• Led by Brittany
• Support you as a head tutor
• Provide resources for you to use with
your tutors

• Write down one goal you have for your
year as a Head Tutor with ARAC.
• Write down one fear you have for your
year as a Head Tutor with ARAC.
• Be honest and specific!
• When you are done place it in basket at
front of the room.
25. GROUP BREAKOUT
• What makes an effective Head Tutor? (at
least 3 characteristics or actions)
• How to run effective team meetings? (at
least 3 tips)
• Incorporate into how to transform fears
into being an effective leader!
• Incorporate how goals will be achieved!
27. LITERACY/MATH SIMULATION
• Follow directions on your hand-out.
• You will have 5-minutes to complete your
assignment.
• If you need help raise your hand.
• No talking!
