5. ABOUT ARAC: WHAT IS IT?
• Started as grassroots campaign to address low
reading test scores after a 1994 study
• President Clinton created the America Reads
Challenge in 1996.
• A part of the Department of Education
• In 1997, program became eligible for work-study
students.
• Is 100% funded by the federal government
• In 1998, America Counts was added to improve
math scores.

in ARAC.

• 4 hour a week commitment
• Must be available for tutoring during the school day
• 8:00am-3:00pm
• Limited afterschool tutoring positions (3:00pm-5:00pm)
• Must qualify for Federal Work Study
• NOT Duke Work Study
• One of best paid on campus jobs
• $13.25 per hr for undergraduate students
• $16.25 per hr for graduate students
