Cities as heart of the society
As in ancient times in Athens and Rome, cities
returned to the political and economic heart of
the society, accounting for 70% of global GDP,
a figure that will continue to increase as the
proportion of people living in cities increases
50% to 70% between now and 2050. The cities
also represent the vast majority of new
investments in infrastructure and the major
environmental impact on the planet.
The opportunity
The city of Rio de Janeiro concentrates today
large infrastructure investment and an
international visibility for holding the Olympics
in 2016. Is the ideal setting for holding an
international conference and launch the Urban
Innovation Center, to develop national and
international activities.

Keynote: PAUL DOHERTY - Silicon Valley
Keynote Presentation
SUSTAINABLE SMART CITIES:
IT’S ALL ABOUT THE PEOPLE
PAUL DOHERTY
CEO, the digit group
Silicon Valley
A Smart City is not a marketing campaign, a
slick sales technique nor an amusing
political catch phrase. It is a series of
solutions to a serious and urgent situation
the world faces today. Smart Cities are
emerging as a civic action due to a “perfect
storm” of the convergence of market
conditions, technology innovation, social
wants and government needs and the
migration to urban environments that has
accelerated on a global scale that dwarfs
any previous mass movement of people in
history. Join us for an exploration of real
world examples of sustainable smart cities
in Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates,
Malaysia and China that can provide you
with frameworks for success that will
include safety, security, education, sufficient
food, quality medical care and an improved
quality of life.
