BONUS: John Rudrud Be the Match Strategy Overview Slides
1. The cure for blood cancers is in the hands of ordinary people.
Erica, donor
Luke, transplant recipient
2. About Be The Match
For people with life-threatening
blood cancers like leukemia
and lymphoma or other
diseases, a cure exists.
Be The Match connects
patients with their donor
match for a life-saving
marrow or umbilical
cord blood transplant.
2
Henry, transplant recipient
3. Bone Marrow Transplantation
Bone marrow is the soft, blood-forming tissue that fills the
cavities of bones. Marrow is responsible for making blood-
forming stem cells that turn into white blood cells, red blood
cells and platelets.
A marrow transplant replaces the patient’s diseased marrow
with healthy blood-forming cells from a closely matched donor
or umbilical cord blood.
3
4. Diseases Treated by Cellular Therapy
Transplant*
• Leukemias and Lymphomas
• Multiple Myeloma
• Severe Aplastic Anemia
• Immunodeficiency syndromes
• Hemoglobinopathies, including Sickle Cell Disease
• Myelodysplastic and myeloproliferative disorders
• Other emerging indications
*over 75 diseases in total
4
5. They depend on the
Be The Match Registry®
to find an unrelated donor
or cord blood unit.
5
Zalika, (l) received a life-saving marrow transplant
from her donor, Tinisha (r).
70% of patients who need a transplant do
not have a matching donor in their family
6. As a leader in marrow and
cord blood transplantation:
Be The Match supports every aspect of the transplant
process
• Patient and family support
• Physician education and services
• Research to advance the science of transplantation
• Donor and cord blood recruitment
• Network support for the transplant community
6
7. We help physicians by providing:
• Access to more than
20.5 million donors
and more than
590,000 cord blood
units worldwide
• Scientific expertise
to help select the
best donor or cord
blood unit
• Ongoing education
on advances in
transplant and
patient care
7
8. We advance transplant science
through our research arm, CIBMTR
®
(Center for International Blood and
Marrow Transplant Research)
• Improved matching: making it
easier and faster to find the best
donor or cord blood unit
• Improved timing: earlier transplant
is leading to better outcomes
• Advances in treatment: making
transplant a better option for
patients 51-75 years old.
8
9. Through Be The Match,
we recruit people who want to save a life.
• More than 626,000 potential donors were added to the registry
last year.
• We added more than 20,800 cord blood units.
• 42% of new registry members are racially and ethnically diverse,
which increases all patients’ chances of finding a match.
9
10. Blood-forming cells used in transplant
come from three sources:
Bone marrow is a spongy tissue found
inside larger bones. Doctors remove the
bone marrow from a donor's hip bone in a
surgical procedure using sterile needles
and syringes.
10
Elias(l) transplant recipient
11. Blood-forming cell sources:
11
Peripheral blood stem cells (PBSC) are cells found in the bloodstream.
To donate PBSC, a donor is given shots that make more blood-forming
cells move into the circulating blood.
The donor’s blood is
removed through a
needle in one arm and
passed through a
machine that
separates out the
blood-forming cells.
The remaining blood
is returned to the
donor.
12. Blood-forming cell sources:
Umbilical cord blood is
collected from the umbilical
cord and placenta after a
baby is born. This blood
contains a large number of
blood-forming cells. The
donated cord blood is frozen
and stored at a cord blood
bank for future use.

Be The Match Registry
®
is the largest and
most diverse donor registry in the world.
• More than 10.5 million potential
adult donors
• Nearly 185,000 cord blood units
“Minority” includes donors who identified their race or
ethnicity as:
– American Indian or Alaska Native
– Asian
– Black or African American
– Hispanic or Latino
– Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander

15. Our Network of worldwide Partners
15
Be The Match is the hub of
a global transplant network
including partner centers
throughout the U.S.
as well as centers
and registries
in 41 countries.
16. 16
International Activity
• 45% of transplants we facilitate have either
an international donor or recipient
• More than 20.5 million potential adult donors
and more than 590,000 cord blood units
available worldwide
17. We will continue to:
• Increase recruitment and
availability of adult donors,
and cord blood units.
• Help all patients get the
transplant they need, when
they need it.
• Improve outcomes through
advances in research and
clinical practice.
