I started my software career as a project manager, but hated not being able to weigh in on technical decisions. Not having the typical computer science background, I was forced to make up for it on my own time. I worked my way into engineering roles, first learning to write software, then managing servers and databases, eventually building complex data processing tools. I found myself leading technical discussions and managing product roadmaps, not because I was the most technical, but because I understood the entire scope of the project and relationship between the end users and the business.
