Lock-in is a situation in which a customer using a product or service cannot easily transition to a competitor’s product or service. Lock-in is usually the result of proprietary technologies that are incompatible with those of competitors.

Common thought processes around cloud lock-in Standards are still being formed, and cloud computing is still too immature to reach the point where customers are demanding vendor independence. Going with a cloud solution means buying into the specific protocols, standards, and tools of the cloud vendor, making future migration costly and difficult. Cloud is erasing the gains we’ve made in terms of vendor dependence lock-in. When enterprises calculate the cost of leveraging cloud computing services, they don’t factor in the costs of migrating off the system – expenses which could be prohibitive and unexpected.

Cloud tools such as IaaS, PaaS, should be looked at as powerful value- add enablers! No one delivers more powerful enabling tools than AWS. The two crown jewels of an enterprise are its data and it code base (apps, logic, etc.) that drive its business and differentiates from its competitors. So why do I say “Happy Together – Embracing cloud lock-in?”
