CNES uses stratospheric balloons to conduct scientific missions at the edge of space. Balloons can reach altitudes of up to 41 km and carry payloads for missions lasting over 24 hours. CNES operates a balloon launch system including balloons, gondolas, ground stations, and control rooms to coordinate launches and monitor flights. Recent missions have studied water vapor and greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, observed interstellar dust, and tested solar panel calibration.
