CANCER
Background
īŽ Cells divide and multiply as the body
    needs them. When these cells
    continue multiplying when the body
doesn't need them, the result is a
mass or growth, also called a tumor.
Background
īŽ These growths are considered either
    benign or malignant.
īŽ Each type of cancer is unique with its own
    causes, symptoms, and methods of
treatment. Like with all groups of disease,
some types of cancer are more common
    than others.
Cancer

īŽa malignant tumor of potentially
 unlimited growth that expands
 locally by invasion and metastasis
Cancer
īŽ Cancer is one of the most common
  diseases in the world:
īŽ 1 in 4 deaths are due to cancer

īŽ Lung cancer is the most common

  cancer in men
īŽ Breast cancer is the most common

  cancer in women
īŽ There are over 100 different forms of

  cancer
Cancer
īŽ The division (mitosis) of normal cells
is precisely controlled. New cells are
only formed for growth or to replace
  dead ones.
īŽ Cancerous cells divide repeatedly out

of control even though they are not
needed, they crowd out other normal
  cells and function abnormally.
īŽ They can also destroy the correct
Cancer Is One Outcome of A Runaway Cell Cycle

Licentious division - prostate cancer cells during division.
The Cell Cycle and Cancer
īŽ Neoplasm- abnormal growth of cells
īŽ Benign neoplasms are not cancerous

      īŽEncapsulated; Do not invade
       neighboring tissue or spread
    īŽ Malignant neoplasms are cancerous

      īŽNot encapsulated; Readily invade
       neighboring tissues
īŽMay also detach and lodge in distant

       places – metastasis
The Cell Cycle and Cancer

īŽ Carcinogenesis – development of
 cancer
īŽ Tends to be gradual, takes

   years
Characteristics of Cancer
                Cells
īŽ Lack differentiation (control)

īŽ Have abnormal nuclei

īŽ Form tumors

īŽ Mitosis controlled by contact with

  neighboring cells – contact inhibition
īŽ Cancer cells have lost contact

  inhibition
Characteristics of Cancer Cells
īŽ Undergo metastasis
  īŽ Original tumor easily fragments

īŽ New tumors appear in other

    organs
īŽ Undergo angiogenesis

īŽ Formation of new blood vessels
Cancer Cells Versus
   Normal Cells
Stages of Cancer
īŽ Stage I cancers are localized to one part
    of the body; usually curable.
īŽ Stage II cancers are locally advanced.
īŽ Stage III cancers are also locally
    advanced.
īŽ Stage IV cancers have often
metastasized, or spread to other organs or
    throughout the body.
Stages of Cancer
What causes cancer?
īŽ Cancer arises from the mutation

 of a normal gene.
īŽ A factor which brings about a

  mutation is called a mutagen.
īŽ It is thought that several mutations

need to occur to give rise to cancer
īŽ Mutated genes that cause cancer

  are called oncogenes .
What causes cancer?
īŽ Any agent that causes cancer
is called a carcinogen and is
  described as carcinogenic.
īŽ Cancerous cells do not self

  destruct and continue to divide
  rapidly producing millions of
  new cancerous cells.
Carcinogens
īŽ Ionising radiation – X Rays, UV light
īŽ Chemicals – tar from cigarettes

īŽ Virus infection – papilloma virus can

  be responsible for cervical cancer.
īŽ Hereditary predisposition – Some

  families are more susceptible to
  getting certain cancers. Remember
you can’t inherit cancer its just that
  you maybe more susceptible to
  getting it.
What are the different
        kinds of Cancer?
īŽ The four most common cancers are:
īŽ Breast Cancer
īŽ Colon Cancer
īŽ Lung Cancer
īŽ Prostate Cancer
What are the different
        kinds of Cancer?
īŽ Cancers of Blood and Lymphatic
    Systems:
īŽ Hodgkin's Disease
īŽ Leukemias
īŽ Lymphomas
īŽ Multiple Myeloma
īŽ WaldenstrÃļm's Disease
What are the different
         kinds of Cancer?
īŽ Cancers of Digestive Systems:
īŽ Head and Neck Cancers
īŽ Esophageal Cancer
īŽ Stomach Cancer
īŽ Cancer of Pancreas
īŽ Liver Cancer
īŽ Colon and Rectal Cancer
īŽ Anal cancer
What are the different
         kinds of Cancer?
īŽ Cancers of Urinary system:
īŽ Kidney Cancer
īŽ Bladder Cancer
īŽ Testis Cancer
īŽ Prostate Cancer
What are the different
         kinds of Cancer?
īŽ Miscellaneous cancers:
īŽ Brain Tumors
īŽ Bone Tumors
īŽ Nasopharyngeal Cancer
īŽ Retroperitoneal sarcomas
īŽ Soft Tissue Tumors
īŽ Thyroid Cancer
īŽ Cancers of Unknown Primary Site
What causes cancer?
īŽ Stress
īŽ There is connection between stress,
immune system and cancer, that is
changing the direction of research: it now
appears that cancer cells make proteins
that actually tell the immune system to let
them alone and even to help them grow.
What causes cancer?
īŽ Stress

īŽ cancer
       can weaken the immune
system and allowing a tumor to
 grow

  breast cancer
   symptoms?
Cancer Treatment
īŽ Chemotherapy treatment
īŽ uses medicine to weaken and destroy
cancer cells in the body, including cells at
the original cancer site and any cancer
cells that may have spread to another part
    of the body.
Cancer Treatment
īŽ Chemotherapy treatment
īŽ or "chemo," is a systemic therapy, which
means it affects the whole body by going
    through the bloodstream.
īŽ In some cases, chemotherapy is given
before surgery to shrink the cancer
Cancer Treatment
īŽ Radiation therapy (also called
    radiotherapy)
īŽ high-energy rays are used to damage
cancer cells and stop them from growing
    and dividing.
īŽ A specialist in radiation therapy is called a
    radiation oncologist.
Cancer Treatment
īŽ Radiation therapy (also called
    radiotherapy)
īŽ Like surgery, radiation therapy is a local
treatment; it affects cancer cells only in the
treated area. Radiation can come from a
    machine (external radiation).
Cancer Treatment
īŽ Radiation therapy (also called
    radiotherapy)
īŽ It can also come from an implant (a small
    container of radioactive material) placed
directly into or near the tumor (internal
    radiation). Some patients receive both
    kinds of radiation therapy.
Cancer Prevention
īŽ Healthy lifestyle
    īŽ Exercise and proper breathing
    īŽ Balanced diet
    īŽ Complete rest and sleep
īŽ Water (8 to 10 glasses daily)
īŽ Eating Fruit on an empty stomach
