Description
The Telecommunications Management Information Platform (TeMIP) is Compaq’s platform for network
and service management -- a family of software products for the management of telecommunications and
corporate networks, including fixed wire and mobile/cellular voice and data, multivendor, multi-
technology networks. TeMIP V3.2A provides comprehensive off-the-shelf fault and trouble management
functions, such as Alarm Handling, Event Logging, and Trouble Ticketing for telecommunications
network management.
TeMIP supports the International Standards Organization (ISO) management standards ISO 10164-x and
10165-x, and the TeleManagement Forum (TMF) ensembles. TeMIP and its features are applicable in the
context of the International Telephone Union-Telecommunication Standards (ITU-T) X.73x and
Telecommunication Management Network (TMN) M.3010 and M3100 Recommendations. It gives
network operators a global view of their networks, and enables them to activate management functions
and operations from single or multiple workstations.
The TeMIP product set is built on top of the TeMIP Framework, and fully benefits from its object-oriented
and truly distributed software architecture.
Two new TeMIP products have been released:
 TeMIP Alarm Handling for Windows NT, a true client of the previously deployed TeMIP Alarm
Handling functionality on DIGITAL UNIX
 TeMIP Access Library Toolkit for Windows NT, which facilitates development of specific custom
front office applications on Windows NT
The TeMIP program now provides possibilities of expanding front office desk capacities of a network
management deployment based on TeMIP with a client/server environment on Windows NT.
TeMIP Alarm Handling for Windows NT
TeMIP Alarm Handling for Windows NT, the initial offering of TeMIP Fault and Trouble Management
for Windows NT, consists of Realtime Alarm Handling and Alarm Historian (Alarm View). TeMIP
Alarm Handling collects and analyzes problem information generated by the elements in a
telecommunications or corporate network. TeMIP Alarm Handling for Windows NT provides presentation
capabilities with the familiar look and feel of Windows applications including drag and drop, sorting by
columns, docking, and others.
TeMIP Alarm Handling for Windows NT has been developed and integrated using the client/server
version of the TeMIP Access Library (TAL) Toolkit, which allows a remote PC client Graphical User
Interface to access TeMIP services through a distributed Client/Server system, running under the
Windows NT Operating System.
TeMIP Access Library Toolkit for Windows NT
TeMIP Access Library Toolkit for Windows NT permits development and integration of intelligent
TeMIP presentation applications running on remote Windows NT PC systems by easing the task of
accessing and manipulating meaningful and accurate information from a TeMIP director. This is
essentially done through provision of an object-oriented class library of low-level TeMIP components that
are easy to use by virtue of a high level of abstraction and employment of simple data types.
Features
∗ TeMIP Alarm Handling for Windows NT offers the same interface features as those offered by the
TeMIP Alarm Handling for DIGITAL UNIX, as well as:
− Realtime monitoring of alarms and retrospective analysis of alarm data on Windows NT client
system
− Creation of multiple realtime alarm views, each customizable using a different filter
− Sorting of alarms by columns
− Dragging alarms from both realtime and alarm history lists and dropping them into various
destinations, for example, a filter tree or export text
∗ TeMIP Access Library Toolkit for Windows NT offers:
− An abstract specification of a C++ class library that facilitates development of applications
running in a Windows NT environment and accessing resources in the TeMIP environment
TeMIP V3.2A Features
TeMIP Alarm Handling for Windows NT and TeMIP Access Library Toolkit for Windows NT fit into the
recently released V3.2A of the TeMIP product set, which provides the following new features on
DIGITAL UNIX:
Iconic Map and Alarm Handling Presentation Module
∗ Shelf Views -- Provides a way to describe the contents of an entity, and of its subentities, using
drawings and graphical objects
∗ Map Layers -- Allows symbols to be logically grouped within the same map or shelf view, allowing
definition of logical subviews and quick display or hiding of groups of objects
∗ Map filters -- Allows for simplification of the map display by temporarily hiding the backdrop,
drawings, alarmed entities, or texts
∗ Domain Shortcuts -- Navigation accelerators that provide links to other domains
∗ TeMIP-to-Netscape interface -- URLs can be associated with icons on the map, so that the URL
appears on the information line when the mouse pointer moves over the icon. Double-clicking on the
icon displays the associated Web page in a Netscape window. The Netscape interface is also used to
display online help in HTML format.
Other enhancements
∗ Customizable maximum zoom factor
∗ Graphics support for 24-plane visuals
∗ Customizable domain color propagation (enable or disable per entity)
∗ Multi-line text objects
∗ Customizable map layout
∗ Button to restore the initial zoom factor
Alarm Handling
∗ Standalone Realtime Alarm Handling -- It is now possible to start a new instance of the Realtime
Alarm Handling window without a running Iconic Map window, thus saving system resources.
∗ Enhanced Alarm Filtering permits:
− Save and name filter patterns, and use of saved filter patterns on demand or at window startup
− Application of filters on many more attributes than previously available
− Application of Boolean expressions (logical AND, OR, NOT) when defining filters
− Application of access control (TeMIP Security) to update an active filter
− Drag and drop between the alarm information in the main or subwindow and its associated filter
window
− Display of the Total Alarms and New Alarms counters
− Enhancements to the Entity List window and Entity Name display
∗ Multiple Realtime Alarm Handling Windows -- Subwindows can be instantiated from an existing
Realtime Alarm Handling window to display subsets of alarms from the selected Operation Contexts.
All alarms management functions available in the main Realtime Alarm Handling window are also
applicable to any subwindow. When minimized, subwindow icons show the number of alarms and
highest severity level.
∗ Alarm Sorting in a Realtime Alarm Handling Window can be done in either ascending or descending
order by simply clicking on a column header
∗ Customizable Additional Alarm Fields -- Additional user-defined alarm fields, extracted from the
Additional Text attribute, can be displayed
∗ Miscellaneous enhancements to the Presentation Module include:
− Context-sensitive Web launch and online HTML-based Help
− Support for Probable Cause numeric values
− Search for alarms that have an operator note
− Direct access to TTR information from the Trouble Ticketing subwindow
− Archiving of alarm objects in a Sybase external database in addition to the previously supported
Oracle databases
Visual TeMIP V2.0A
Visual TeMIP V2.0A provides the first stage of full support for generic datatypes. Main enhancements
are:
∗ Support for generic wrapper datatypes
∗ New Queue and List (utility) classes
∗ Improved dictionary access using a cache dictionary
∗ Support for generic requests and replies
∗ TeMIP Security support for multiple security sessions
∗ Support for the RogueWave Tools.h++ toolkit
∗ New Mguard class
Visual TeMIP also includes the Local TeMIP Access Library services used, for example, by the new
product, TeMIP Expert System Access V1.0. Refer to "TeMIP Expert System Access V1.0 for DIGITAL
UNIX V4.0D" in the September 15, 1998, issue of Customer Update.
Miscellaneous enhancements
∗ Running on DIGITAL UNIX V4.0D and Windows NT 4.0, TeMIP V3.2A offers a fully Year 2000-
compliant solution
∗ Low-level filtering of events is now supported by the Alarm Generator Access Module, the Alarms
Access Module, and the Alarms Function Module
∗ Set of directives for the Managing Director of an entity is now implemented at Registration FM level
∗ TeMIP setup procedure has been made easier in two ways:
− Various configuration stages can be run separately
− A configuration can be saved and then re-used as a starting point for a similar platform
License management using FLEXlm
The TeMIP V3.2A product set, running on DIGITAL UNIX V4.0D and on Windows NT 4.0 will require
obtaining a FLEXlm license file to enable the software. Instructions for obtaining the FLEXlm license file
for new, as well as update and field test customers, are included in the cover letters on each of the
distribution media in the product set. A text file, temip-license-form.txt, is included with the cover letter
in electronic format. For use of any prior version on DIGITAL UNIX of the products listed below in the
TeMIP V3.2 product set, the LMF checksum is located on the Software PAK received as a deliverable
upon order of the Software License. This checksum is only valid for LMF enabling -- that is, for versions
running on DIGITAL UNIX V4.0B or V3.2G or earlier.

  • 1. TeMIP Alarm Handling for Windows NT and TeMIP Access Library Toolkit for Windows NT Highlights ∗ Architecture and Scalability -- TeMIP's distributed, object oriented software, suitable for management of hybrid networks, allows an initial low-end system to grow to a high-end system as the network evolves ∗ Performance -- TeMIP manages, with constant performance, networks that extend up to millions of network objects, up to millions of events per day, and up to hundreds of simultaneously active operator seats ∗ Functionality -- TeMIP includes a set of generic configuration, fault and trouble management applications, developed to easily support network extensions and technology changes ∗ Openness and support of international standards -- TeMIP design comforms to ITU-T's TMN recommendations, ISO's OSI, X/Open, and TMF Ensembles defining operating environment, architecture, protocols, and procedures ∗ Multiprotocol support facilitates deployment in heterogeneous environments Description The Telecommunications Management Information Platform (TeMIP) is Compaq’s platform for network and service management -- a family of software products for the management of telecommunications and corporate networks, including fixed wire and mobile/cellular voice and data, multivendor, multi- technology networks. TeMIP V3.2A provides comprehensive off-the-shelf fault and trouble management functions, such as Alarm Handling, Event Logging, and Trouble Ticketing for telecommunications network management. TeMIP supports the International Standards Organization (ISO) management standards ISO 10164-x and 10165-x, and the TeleManagement Forum (TMF) ensembles. TeMIP and its features are applicable in the context of the International Telephone Union-Telecommunication Standards (ITU-T) X.73x and Telecommunication Management Network (TMN) M.3010 and M3100 Recommendations. It gives network operators a global view of their networks, and enables them to activate management functions and operations from single or multiple workstations. The TeMIP product set is built on top of the TeMIP Framework, and fully benefits from its object-oriented and truly distributed software architecture. Two new TeMIP products have been released:  TeMIP Alarm Handling for Windows NT, a true client of the previously deployed TeMIP Alarm Handling functionality on DIGITAL UNIX  TeMIP Access Library Toolkit for Windows NT, which facilitates development of specific custom front office applications on Windows NT The TeMIP program now provides possibilities of expanding front office desk capacities of a network management deployment based on TeMIP with a client/server environment on Windows NT. TeMIP Alarm Handling for Windows NT TeMIP Alarm Handling for Windows NT, the initial offering of TeMIP Fault and Trouble Management for Windows NT, consists of Realtime Alarm Handling and Alarm Historian (Alarm View). TeMIP Alarm Handling collects and analyzes problem information generated by the elements in a telecommunications or corporate network. TeMIP Alarm Handling for Windows NT provides presentation capabilities with the familiar look and feel of Windows applications including drag and drop, sorting by columns, docking, and others. TeMIP Alarm Handling for Windows NT has been developed and integrated using the client/server version of the TeMIP Access Library (TAL) Toolkit, which allows a remote PC client Graphical User
  • 2. Interface to access TeMIP services through a distributed Client/Server system, running under the Windows NT Operating System. TeMIP Access Library Toolkit for Windows NT TeMIP Access Library Toolkit for Windows NT permits development and integration of intelligent TeMIP presentation applications running on remote Windows NT PC systems by easing the task of accessing and manipulating meaningful and accurate information from a TeMIP director. This is essentially done through provision of an object-oriented class library of low-level TeMIP components that are easy to use by virtue of a high level of abstraction and employment of simple data types. Features ∗ TeMIP Alarm Handling for Windows NT offers the same interface features as those offered by the TeMIP Alarm Handling for DIGITAL UNIX, as well as: − Realtime monitoring of alarms and retrospective analysis of alarm data on Windows NT client system − Creation of multiple realtime alarm views, each customizable using a different filter − Sorting of alarms by columns − Dragging alarms from both realtime and alarm history lists and dropping them into various destinations, for example, a filter tree or export text ∗ TeMIP Access Library Toolkit for Windows NT offers: − An abstract specification of a C++ class library that facilitates development of applications running in a Windows NT environment and accessing resources in the TeMIP environment TeMIP V3.2A Features TeMIP Alarm Handling for Windows NT and TeMIP Access Library Toolkit for Windows NT fit into the recently released V3.2A of the TeMIP product set, which provides the following new features on DIGITAL UNIX: Iconic Map and Alarm Handling Presentation Module ∗ Shelf Views -- Provides a way to describe the contents of an entity, and of its subentities, using drawings and graphical objects ∗ Map Layers -- Allows symbols to be logically grouped within the same map or shelf view, allowing definition of logical subviews and quick display or hiding of groups of objects ∗ Map filters -- Allows for simplification of the map display by temporarily hiding the backdrop, drawings, alarmed entities, or texts ∗ Domain Shortcuts -- Navigation accelerators that provide links to other domains ∗ TeMIP-to-Netscape interface -- URLs can be associated with icons on the map, so that the URL appears on the information line when the mouse pointer moves over the icon. Double-clicking on the icon displays the associated Web page in a Netscape window. The Netscape interface is also used to display online help in HTML format. Other enhancements ∗ Customizable maximum zoom factor ∗ Graphics support for 24-plane visuals ∗ Customizable domain color propagation (enable or disable per entity) ∗ Multi-line text objects ∗ Customizable map layout ∗ Button to restore the initial zoom factor Alarm Handling ∗ Standalone Realtime Alarm Handling -- It is now possible to start a new instance of the Realtime Alarm Handling window without a running Iconic Map window, thus saving system resources. ∗ Enhanced Alarm Filtering permits:
  • 3. − Save and name filter patterns, and use of saved filter patterns on demand or at window startup − Application of filters on many more attributes than previously available − Application of Boolean expressions (logical AND, OR, NOT) when defining filters − Application of access control (TeMIP Security) to update an active filter − Drag and drop between the alarm information in the main or subwindow and its associated filter window − Display of the Total Alarms and New Alarms counters − Enhancements to the Entity List window and Entity Name display ∗ Multiple Realtime Alarm Handling Windows -- Subwindows can be instantiated from an existing Realtime Alarm Handling window to display subsets of alarms from the selected Operation Contexts. All alarms management functions available in the main Realtime Alarm Handling window are also applicable to any subwindow. When minimized, subwindow icons show the number of alarms and highest severity level. ∗ Alarm Sorting in a Realtime Alarm Handling Window can be done in either ascending or descending order by simply clicking on a column header ∗ Customizable Additional Alarm Fields -- Additional user-defined alarm fields, extracted from the Additional Text attribute, can be displayed ∗ Miscellaneous enhancements to the Presentation Module include: − Context-sensitive Web launch and online HTML-based Help − Support for Probable Cause numeric values − Search for alarms that have an operator note − Direct access to TTR information from the Trouble Ticketing subwindow − Archiving of alarm objects in a Sybase external database in addition to the previously supported Oracle databases Visual TeMIP V2.0A Visual TeMIP V2.0A provides the first stage of full support for generic datatypes.
