History of Social Dance

Social grooving is based on the actual Cotillion and Quadrille. They are stylized dances for 4
couples, plus they gave birth to English and Scottish country dancing, along with American
square dancing.

Galliard, Minuet as well as Gavotte (each developing from the other) was couples dancing,
however each partner danced at arms length, within repetitive designs. A crinoline or even a
chaperone were distinct hindrances for you to get any closer.

The true revolution was the actual Waltz as the man will take his partner into his arms. The
popularity had been directly related to being denounced by proper culture as immoral. The
same denouncements were utilized on the Tango, the Charleston, Jitterbug as well as Rock
and roll, with similar results.

About 1910, the Tango landed in Britain, via France, from Argentina. Its origins had been the
sailors, gauchos and ladies of ill repute in Argentina. The actual Tango after that diverged,
evolving in Europe as Ballroom, and developing inside the South American countries in to
what is now known as the Argentine Tango.

The presence of United States soldiers within Europe following World War I, helped by
recordings, and of course radio, popularized American music inside Europe, and, since
boogie styles are influenced by music designs, the One step, Foxtrot and a a lot slower Waltz
emerged.

The theater avenue, including Tap, Ballet, and then Modern dance and Jazz formed,
however ballroom dancers were bringing order to their swiftly developing style. By the late
twenties, the modern pattern was established. The One step and also Quick Foxtrot
transformed into the Quickstep; the Slow Foxtrot grew to become much more flowing; the
slower version of the Waltz was now done with feet parallel; and the European type Tango
made an appearance.

In Ball room dancing, Great Britain ruled coming from 1920 through to 1980. The appearance
of Latin American dance in the 50's didn’t break the British hurdle, and there were few Open
Championships around the globe that were not held by British couples during this period.

The fifties saw Latin American dancing increase in appeal. The actual Rumba, Samba, Paso
Doble and Jive came along during this period. The Viennese Waltz was briefly included as a
Latin American dance. The Tango reigned, today being danced in 2 branches. The birth with
the Cha Cha Cha in 1954, set the scene for the Global style Latin American branch of dance.
This was, and it is still, five dances. Rumba, Samba, Paso Doble, Cha Cha Cha and Jive.
The actual Viennese Waltz is currently used as the fifth Ball room branch boogie for high-
level performers.
Rock and Roll crashed onto the scene in the late fifties, followed in the seventies by Disco,
changing to Freestyle in the nineties. Freestyle can be danced solo, in pairs or in teams,
rendering it very flexible and popular with children and unattached young adults.

Line dancing, where the dancers perform series or routines in lines, is another form where
you don’t need a partner, adding to its popularity with older single people. Line dancing
struck it big inside country music, specially in the United States, in the eighties.

Broadway musicals and tv dance displays showcase Mambo, Salsa, Meringue, Bossa Nova,
Cumbia, Vallenato, Belly Dancing and Cheerleading dancing.
