- How did we get here? No money is coming from the city budget Three Year Study of self-directed, peer-based learning funded by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation Examining young people’s participation in the new media and how it is integrated into youth culture, but also how it changes the youth-adult negotiations over literacy, learning and authoritative knowledge. The exciting findings with relation to how
- Library as a destination: both in social aspects as well as exploration and work
- The Chicago Public Library is interested in developing a space to engage teens after school. They want the library to be a destination that isn’t just about books, but a comfortable place for hanging out and doing homework or personal projects. They also want the new space to act as a gateway to lifetime learning, making teens aware of the library’s other resources. Many schools in the Chicago area are suffering from cuts in their arts programs, so the library wants to become a community anchor where kids can access the types of learning no longer available to them in school.
- The room also has to accommodate the YouMedia program, which is a curriculum designed by the Digital Youth Network. This program has a focus on digital art and will teach teens how to edit videos, mix audio and create digital art. The program also gives teens access to volunteer mentors to teach and help them with their work.
