2. It has been 68 years since Pearl Harbor. Pearl Harbor was a devastating day for many Americans. It was the day that the Japanese attacked unexceptionally. And where a vast number of lives were lost.

3. Pearl Harbor was a United States Air Forces station located in Hawaii.One of the United States major naval bases.It stationed some of the United States prized possessions in warships, air crafts, and submarines. The eastern side of Ford Island was most commonly known as “Battleship Row.” This is where the loading, unloading, docking location for many of U.S ships and aircraft carriers.

4. Though the naval base was huge. There still wasn’t enough room to hold all of the Fleet and the men to operate it. The location for Pearl Harbor was located by main water, but only had a little channel for warships to exit. Making it extremely difficult if there was a security issue to be addressed. Due to the lack of space, the men that were to live on Pearl Harbor suffered from close corridors and lack of privacy. When all the rooms were taken up, a lot of the men and equipment had to go to shore on the island Honolulu. Making a lot of locals not too happy with the situation.

5. From the beginning, the location for Pearl Harbor and the lack of security around it made it an easy target. With the decision made by Japan, Chuichi Nagumo was assigned to the mission and command the loyal Japanese Army. With all of six air craft carriers sent to Pearl Harbor, Japan came heavily armed. Over 420 planes headed towards Pearl Harbor when America was least expecting it. "At approximately eight o'clock on the morning of December 7, 1941, I was leaving the breakfast table when the ship's siren for air defense sounded. Having no anti-aircraft battle station, I paid little attention to it.”(1)

6. At the crack of dawn on December 7th, 1941, the first wave of Japan’s attack hit. Over 180 aircrafts in the first wave struck 300 miles north of Pearl Harbor. Quickly following the second wave hit just as hard as the first. And along with the third wave also including aircraft but this time included something new. Submarines that were slowly making their way into the narrow channel where Pearl Harbor was located, destroying everything in its path. “Suddenly I heard an explosion. I ran to the port door leading to the quarterdeck and saw a bomb strike a barge of some sort alongside the NEVADA, or in that vicinity.”(1)

7. Aboard the USS Arizona Aboard the USS Arizona. “Ten minutes after the beginning of the attack a bomb crashes through the Arizona's two armored decks igniting its magazine. The explosion rips the ship's sides open like a tin can starting a fire that engulfs the entire ship. Within minutes she sinks to the bottom taking 1,300 lives with her. ”(1) “I had only been there a short time when a terrible explosion caused the ship to shake violently. I looked at the boat deck and everything seemed aflame forward of the mainmast. I reported to the Major that the ship was aflame, which was rather needless, and after looking about, the Major ordered us to leave.”(1)

8. To this day men are still scared by the events that happened at Pearl Harbor. Many are in peace after the memorial was constructed for the lives that were lost on the USS Arizona. “The 184-foot-long Memorial structure spanning the mid-portion of the sunken battleship consists of three main sections: the entry and assembly rooms; a central area designed for ceremonies and general observation; and the shrine room, where the names of those killed on the Arizona are engraved on the marble wall.”(3)

10. Always Remember Though there was little damage to the aircrafts, ships and Pearl Harbor itself, America was still affected. With a clear decision, America took action with World War II and helped stop Japan dead in it’s tracks. With the war far behind us, people still can’t forget what happened on the a cold day in December of 1941.
