How Did The Treaty Of Versailles Punish Germany
The Treaty of Versailles is a peace treaty, where it basically punishes Germany. It makes them
powerless to a point that they cannot be able to create another war. This treaty was way too harsh on
the Germans. It is a fact that they were not the only ones fighting in the war, and they should not be
the only one, who should be punished. Everyone must take responsibilities for their drastic
decisions. All of the major countries had a role in this war, not only Germany. The Germans were
stripped down of everything they had. It left Germans helplessly and made to live in poverty. In
order to pay off the damages that were made, they were treated like slaves. Instead of making peace
with Germany, the Treaty of Versailles was sparking another fire

A Separate Peace: Movie Analysis
The film and writing industry go hand in hand, as they often inspire one another. As a result, the
translation of many novels into movie format and vice versa vary in success. For instance, many
people prefer the film format over the novel since it is usually less time consuming and requires less
active participation. However, films tend to overlook significant details which aid the viewer's
understanding of the story. Therefore, the two separate forms of media have too many differences to
portray the same work of fiction accurately, as they both have their strengths and weaknesses that
appeal to different types of stories and plots. Numerous changes in the movie adaptation of the
novel, A Separate Peace by John Knowles, affected the viewer's ... Show more content on

Movies tend to add less detail than their counterpart, but allow viewers to understand what the
movie is about visually. Additionally, there are some differences in movies which set them apart
from the novel. In the movie adaptation of A Separate Peace by John Knowles, there were
significant changes that were made which changed the viewer's understanding of the story, such as
the change of perspective. This made viewers possess the option of deciding whose perspective to
sympathize with, instead of giving sympathy to the narrator narrating in the first person. Another
important difference is the exclusion of the Devon and Naguamsett river. These two rivers played a
significant role in symbolism early in the novel but were excluded in the movie. It would have given
viewers a deeper meaning of how life was outside and inside the Devon school. Lastly, the marble
staircase was intentionally excluded from the movie, because the possibility of spoiling the ending.
In the novel, it was difficult to connect the marble staircase with anything as it was subtle
foreshadowing. However, as the movie progresses, viewers might ponder the reason why it was
shown in the beginning, and eventually connect it with the tragic end of Phineas falling down. On
the other hand, there were similarities between the two medias, which were key to the story's plot,
such as Gene and Phineas's, this shows the changes to the movie adaptation create a

A Red Light For Difflaws By Frank Trippets Analysis
We are all lawbreakers, most of us just do not realize it yet. In Frank Trippets excerpt "A Red Light
for Scofflaws", explains how there are many people in the United States that break minor laws and
think its "ok" to do so because there are worse things you could have done. He tries to persuade us
to stop all of the nonsense of breaking minor laws. He continues by explaining how our slogan
should be "You're a fool if you obey the rules." The author's tone is disgruntled towards most if not
all americans. The author's argument is valid because the streets are littered with trash and you
might find some gum on your shoes once in awhile, and at the same time people everywhere,
whether it be a party at a house or on the streets in a back alley, are noisy and disrupt the peace that
silence provides. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Most people try to let the elderly or disabled get their upfront spot. My mother is 100% disabled

are those who think they can park there to get a quick item from Starbucks and get out without
getting a fine. This has also happened before, some people just park wherever they please, breaking
laws and leaving before they get in trouble being what we call a scofflaw. People are very self

Themes In A Separate Peace
Many young adults try to play pretend to avoid their reality. When school or friendships build up
they may become difficult to deal with. In the novel, A Separate Peace by John Knowles, some of
the students of the Devon School try to escape their lives to create new ones in their imagination.
Gene thinks of excuses and others stop believing in the world that they are living in. The war makes
most of the kids create delusions about themselves and the others around them. The theme, one's
internal war is derived from external struggles, is demonstrated when Gene cannot face his
delusions about Finny, Leper's brain pulls tricks on itself, and Finny trying to make himself no
longer believe in the war.
Gene believes that everyone is out to get him including his best friend. Gene is one of the top
students in his class but by the drop in his grade says otherwise. When Gene starts failing his tests,

be able to participate in his dream because of a broken leg. Finny's theory about the war all being a

A Separate Piece Literary Analysis
When many things break, they often never return back as healthy as it was before. In John Knowles'
A Separate Piece, Gene and Finny are two best friends who go through many hardships together as
their years pass at the Devon School. All of the boys in attendance are preparing to be enlisted in the
war that is going on outside of school but they each are fighting their own inside themselves. In A
Separate Piece, Knowles utilizes the allegory of Finny's broken leg to represent the difficult times
throughout a friendship.
As Gene comes back to the Devon School fifteen years later he revisits certain sites that have
important meaning to him. While he is tracing through the years he has spent there many things
come to his attention that he hadn't noticed before. He makes his way to the place of the marble
staircase and says, "The marble must be unusually hard. That seemed very likely, only too likely,
although with all my thought about these stairs exceptional hardness had not occurred to me. It was
surprising that I had overlooked that, that crucial fact." (Knowles, 2) This ... Show more content on

Gene believes that Finny had started the fight because no one else would have been able to convince
that many people to come along. "We ended the fight in the only way possible; all of us turned on
Phineas."(Knowles, 92) He was the weak one of the group, so he got left behind from the others and
that is how the fight ended. This means that Gene and the other boys are evolving and coming
together as a group while Finny is not. "No, of course I won't break it again. Isn't the bone supposed
to be stronger when it grows together over a place where it's been broken once?" (Knowles, 93)
Finny says this to Gene because he believes that things will get better, and he will come back
stronger. This also represents their friendship because it was broken at one point and it will never
fully be what it was

Allusions In A Separate Peace
A Separate Peace by John Knowles about a boy named Gene, who returns to his boarding school
after graduating to remember the memories from his time there. The book takes place during the
early years of World War II, which greatly affects the lives of the main characters. Knowles utilizes
many symbols with religious undertones throughout A Separate Peace including Finny's fall from
the tree, Gene's fall into the Naguamsett, and Finny's unexpected death.
Finny fall from the tree on the bank of the Devon river is one of the many religious references in A
Separate Peace. One of the first memories Gene talks about when he returns to his boarding school,
Devon, is the act of jumping off of a tree and into the Devon River. Gene does this with his ... Show

Finny's leg shatters his leg when he falls from the tree that summer. During the winter session, the
other boys become suspicious about the mystery surrounding Finny's fall. Brinker Hadley and his
friends decide to investigate Finny's accident by holding a trial after hours, in the First Building.
When the truth begins to come out from the people present that day, and Finny does not want to hear
it. He becomes angry, not wanting to believe that his best friend could sabotage him this way. He
storms out of the First Building onto the marble staircase where every footstep can be heard, and
everyone inside the building heard his body fall clumsily down the steps. Finny's leg breaks again
but this time it is a "much cleaner break...a simple fracture" (180). This event to some extent is a
religious symbol because when Gene's loss of innocence causes the break it is disastrous but when
no one maliciously causes the break it is much cleaner. Finny undergoes the surgery to repair his leg
but marrow from his bone escapes and stops his heart. Gene says, "I did not cry then or ever about
Finny... I could not escape the feeling that this was my own funeral, and you do not cry in that case"
(194). Finny's death is a religious symbol because Finny dies through no fault of his own. Finny is
pure with a good heart and does not cause his own death. Like Jesus, Finny dies for others, and the
things they do out of spite

Song Analysis Of The Secret Life Of Bees
The Secret Life of Bees, takes place during the Civil Rights Movement in South Carolina. Lily
Owens is a 14 year old girl who carries the senseless burden of killing her mother. She destroys
herself believing that she killed her mother and can't come to peace with the accident she caused that
caused her mother to die. Later in the book she comes to find out that her mother abandoned T. Ray
and her. She is now at a different conundrum and believes her mother should be hoping she'll
forgive her instead of her mother forgiving her. She learns form the Boatrights that she needs to
come to piece with her mothers decisions and for the death of her mother. She notices how Mary
comes to piece when she sings, "Oh! Susanna", and helps her realize we all have our own trials and
hardships but we also have our own way of coming to peace with our actions. Josh Garrels sings the
song,"Farther Along", and to me this is a song of joy. The song does have a somber tone to the song.
"I wondered why the good man dies, the bad man thrives and Jesus cries because he loves em' both".
This phrase tells me how much Jesus loves us. He is not only crying because a good man died, or
because one of his children has fallen far off track, but he is crying for them both. He loves them
both. "There's much more to life than we've been told it's full of beauty that will unfold". Life is full
of ugliness and hardships. This proclaims that there is more than all of that and we will all one day

Tybalt As A Foil For Benvolio In Shakespeare's Romeo And...
William Shakespeare created and developed the Character Tybalt as a foil for Benvolio in his play
Romeo and Juliet. The two characters share some important similarities, examples of these include
the fact that Tybalt and Benvolio are cousins to the main roles Romeo and Juliet (Tybalt is cousin to
Juliet and Benvolio is cousin to Romeo), They are both very family oriented, this means that they
both are loyal supporters of their family and family name. Some differences in character regarding
Tybalt and Benvolio are that while Tybalt is Insensitive, Benvolio is good–hearted. Whenever Tybalt
is eager to fight, Benvolio comes in to save the day and tries to make peace. And While Tybalt

Romeo noticed him and hid from him and Benvolio says he himself wasnt looking for company
because he was in dispair so he left Romeo alone. Then Benvolio starts to be conserned about
Romeo and why he is acting in such manner "My noble uncle, do you know the cause?" When
Montegue says he does not Benvolio replys with "Hav you importuned him by any means?" When
Montegue replys that he and his many friends have, Benvolio then says "See, where he comes. So

A Separate Peace Character Analysis
A Life of Naiveté As per the ancient saying, experience, which destroys innocence, also leads one
back to it. In this book, A Separate Peace by John Knowles, the protagonist Gene Forrester visits the
prep school he attended when he was younger –– The Devon School. As he wanders through the
campus to find a tree, he goes into a flashback to when he was sixteen. In the picture, there's Phineas
(Finny), the super athlete, who also happens to be the roommate of Gene, and Elwin Lepellier, sadly
given the nickname "Leper." Finny declares they should jump out of the tree; Gene obeys but no one
else does. This episode introduces us to their quasi–friendship, which you know, was just fine until
Gene decides to go all whacky on his best friend. John Knowles uses Gene's explanation of causing
Finny to fall, the death of Finny, and Leper's eventual insanity to show that living in a state of
innocence can destroy an individual.
First, Gene's justification of causing Finny to fall is one of the earliest occurrences in the book
exhibiting the inner battles of feelings like anger and jealousy. "He had never been jealous of me for
a second. Now I knew that there never was and could have been any rivalry between us. I was not
the same quality as he. I couldn't stand this" (51). In this quote, Gene was frustrated as he felt that he
was being dragged to watch Leper jump out of the tree. As he received the explanation by Finny
about how studying came "naturally" to Gene, he understood that Finny never had the intention of
sabotaging Gene's stay at Devon. He couldn't help but think that Finny had a better stature as a
human which caused him to jounce the tree limb and make Finny fall.
Then, Knowles uses the death of Phineas to describe a funereal environment and an aloofness
created inside of Gene. "He was incomprehensible. I felt an extremely cold chill along my back and
neck, that was all... I did not cry then or ever about Finny. I did not cry even when I stood watching
him being lowered into his family's strait–laced burial ground outside of Boston. I could not escape
a feeling that this was my own funeral, and you do not cry in that case" (185–186). In the last quote,
Gene appeared to be quite intolerant to the fact that Finny

John Knowles A Separate Peace
Historical Influence on A Separate Peace There are many things that can change how an author may
write, one of the more important things is the way that history and society can change an author's
opinions and thus influence their writing. History can be influential into two ways, either by past
experiences and the expectations that arise out of them or contemporary forces in the author's life as
they write their book. The writing of A Separate Peace was influenced by both contemporary and
past historical forces in John Knowles' life; these include his own personal experiences, the return of
the draft in World War II, and the stigma that arose for all soldiers with PTSD in World War II due to
ignorance and a lack of sympathy.
The rising popularity of boarding schools in the United States began in the 1940s, which also
coincides with when the story of A Separate Peace occurs. The book takes place at a boarding school
called "The Devon School" which is loosely based off of Phillips Exeter Academy, a school at which
John Knowles attended before graduating and going to Yale. A considerable amount of A Separate
Peace is based off of Knowles' own experience at Phillips Exeter Academy; he had altered a few
details to make the story more entertaining to the readers. In one interview Knowles says, "The only

A Separate Peace Essay
In the novel, A Separate Peace by John Knowles, the protagonist, Gene Forrester "battled" within
himself to find "a separate peace" and in this process directed his emotions at Phineas, his
roommate. Forrester and Phineas formed the illusion of a great companionship, but there was a
"silent rivalry" between them in Forrester's mind. Self deceptions in Forrester led him to believe that
Phineas was "out to get him" (Forrester). Subconsciously Forrester jounced the limb of the tree and

and was also competing to be the "best".
Self deceptions inside of Gene Forrester led him to believe that Phineas was "out to get him".
Forrester realized that, "Finny had deliberately set out to wreck my studies" (45), when Phineas said,
"I'd kill myself out of jealous envy" (44) (if Forrester was valedictorian). Having believed Phineas,
Forrester came to another realization that Phineas had created blitzball and the Super Suicide
Society to distract him (Forrester) from being "the best". Phineas did not know that Forrester needed
to study in order to get good grades; "I didn't know you needed to study," (50) he said when
Forrester wanted to stay and study rather than go to the Super Suicide Society meeting. Phineas
thought that academics came naturally to Forrester as athletics came to him (Phineas). Forrester took
Phineas trying to be a friend as him trying to distract for his (Forrester's) academics.
The Super Suicide Society meeting was held for Leper Lepellier to jump from the "forbidden" tree.
To open the meeting Phineas and Forrester tried a double jump. "Holding firmly to the trunk, I

First Three Laws Of Nature By Thomas Hobbes
The first three laws of nature according to Thomas Hobbes were a way to put an end to the state of
war. These laws are based on the idea of a social contract between two human beings that involves
mutual rights between parties. In this answer I will describe how these laws can bring about peace in
society.
Since all of these laws are brought together through peace, according to Hobbes the first law deals
with seeking out peace where war is not an option. Hobbes believes that in order for man to preserve
life he must seek out peace and if peace is achieved this will prevent us from the state of war. In
today's society our goal is to advance the global peace system by supporting and collaborating with
peacebuilding efforts.
The second law of nature deals with the surrendering of our natural rights in order to achieve peace
that we are seeking. If a person does not give up their natural right, they are considered a threat to
the existence of peace among a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This law is the foundation for human justice but because of the human desire for power, there is
always an incentive to break this contract despite the logic of the third law and the natural mandate
to preserve our own lives (Hobbes; Leviathan Chapter 14–16). Other natural laws and eventually the
concept of sovereignty must come into play in order to preserve functionality of this third law
(Hobbes; Leviathan Chapter 14–16).
According to Hobbes if all individuals follow these three natural laws there is a greater chance of
peace in society. In a social contract between individuals, there is an agreement to give up their
natural rights. Hobbes uses this theory to explain the relationship between individuals and others in
society and how they can live free from constant conflict and maintain the peace in

Examples Of Foil Characters In Romeo And Juliet
The story of Romeo and Juliet takes place in Verona, Italy where two families, the Montague's and
Capulets are always bickering over something. Even though Romeo and Juliet are from these two
families, they defy the hatred and fall in love with each other. Throughout the story, many characters
are Foil characters, which means two characters contrast each other to highlight particular qualities.
An example of two foil characters in the play is Tybalt and Benvolio. Tybalt is Lord Capulet's
nephew and Juliet's cousin. Although he has few lines, he influences the entire course of the play to
a degree that exceeds his seemingly minor role. (Author) Tybalt has an angry, stubborn nature. He is
always ready for a good fight and spends most of his time baiting the Montagues into fights. We first
see Tybalt when the Capulet and Montague servants begin fighting, Benvolio attempts to seize the
fighting, but tybalt urges the fighting on and eventually lures Benvolio into a fight with him. (Text

Similarities Between Livry And Livy
Often times small changes in how a story is told can make a big difference in the meaning and
significance of that story. This truth can be observed in comparing Livy's work "The History of
Rome" and Niccolo Machiavelli's Discourses on Livy. Machiavelli and Livy tell the same histories
of Rome but Machiavelli changes details in the Livy's account to support a point that he is
attempting to make through the story. A good example of Machiavelli altering Livy's account is the
account of the Roman treaty with the Samnites. Machiavelli strategically leaves out parts of Livy's
account to help support his points about glory in defeat and breaking treaties. Livy's account begins
with Rome hearing the news that the Roman army had negotiated a peace treaty with the Samnites
after the Samnites surrounded the Roman army. The news of a shameful surrender sent the Roman
people into a state of mourning. After the Roman soldiers returned home in defeat, the Senate
brought up the issue of the peace treaty to be discussed. The first person to be called upon to speak
was Spurius Postumius, one of the leaders of the defeated Roman army and one of the negotiators of
the peace treaty. Postumius rose and gave a proposition to the Senate for how the peace treaty could
be dissolved: This statement will bear witness whether it was myself or your legions that I spared
when I bound myself by a guarantee which may have been disgraceful or forced upon me, but it is

A Separate Peace Poem Analysis
Peace is the absence of hostilities, such as war, self–doubt and guilt, disagreements with others,
internal bitterness, and sickness. In the novel A Separate Peace, WW2 is raging in Europe and in the
Pacific with men dying by the thousands each month, yet at the Vermont preparatory school of
Devon a peace independent of the War exists where there at is no fear of death, loss of one's sanity
and conscience, and fear of degradation. This is all until a cloud of hostility forms over Devon and
over the lives of the two main characters, Gene and Finny. Many times over the course of the novel,
this cloud of hostility parts over the skies of Devon allowing for Peace to shine over the school and

headmasters, fall sports, and 700 students arriving for the new school year. The start of the fall
season marks the first breakdown of peace between Finny and Gene as competition between them
erupts. This competition is mostly marked by Gene's jealousy over Finny's athletic ability and
popularity in relation to his. During this time, both desire to just be friends, but Gene in particular
has trouble overcoming his hostility, making the pursuit of peace seem difficult very difficult. This
is very similar to how the main character in the poem "Peace" by George Herbert had extreme
difficulty finding peace at first as he was unable to search deep enough and let the hostility wear
away. The real tipping point in the novel is when Gene breaks the branch in the tree that Finny was
standing on, causing him to fall and shatter his leg. This at first causes a massive hostility between
them as Finny is very bitter about Gene causing his injury but this time Gene is extremely sorry for
it and he

Symbolism In John Knowles A Separate Peace
The book, "A Separate Peace," by John Knowles can be interpreted more than one way. You can
take it literally, or look into the symbolic meaning of the landmarks of the Devon school, including
the two "fearful sites" Gene visited in the beginning. As stated in the book by Gene, everything in
the time period revolved around the war. This includes the great symbolism used, so mainly the tree,
the Devon River, and the Naguamsett River. The Devon and Naguamsett Rivers both run through
the campus of Devon. They are exact opposites (pg. 40). The Devon River is clean, freshwater, and
well dammed up. It is described as being a small, narrow river fringed by pine and birch (pg. 42) On
the other hand, the Naguamsett River is described as muddy and ... Show more content on

It is also the bank of the Devon River that the "fearful" tree is located (pg. 4 and pg. 43–44). Up to
the point of Finny's accident, it is one of the calmest spots on campus. In fact, Gene directly
connects it to the proud sight of Finny standing on one foot on the branch "like a river god", and
seeming to "transcend gravity." On the contrary, the Naguamsett is a rough saltwater river. It is the
war itself: dark and unknown. The Naguamsett is dangerous just like the war going on, and scary
like the possibilities of draft or enlistment. I also think that the rivers compare well to the two main
characters, Finny and Gene. Gene is rough and unpredictable (pg. 30–32, pg. 34, and pg. 48) like the
Naguamsett River. He is also the one to acknowledge the dark qualities of the war more. Gene is
less stable (pg. 88–89), and small things can quickly change his attitude. Finny, though, is a source
of fun for everyone (pg. 18–19, pg. 24, and 78–80). He is loyal, charming, and everyone knows he is
a stable presence at Devon (pg. 10 and pg. 12–13). Finny is more like the Devon River, because he
is adventurous, but controlled enough so that he is a safe influence. The "friends" are completely
opposite personalities like the Devon and Naguamsett

struggle in life, which is why people have ways to cope with their difficult times. There are an
immense number of times in someone's life that can be hard for them; people use a vast range of
different methods of controlling their hard times. Powaqqatsi and Prison Break involve people

the opposite direction of everyone else on his way down the hill. He was setting himself apart from
the crowd that was bringing bags up the hill, and then walking in a line back for more. By going
down the hill instead of helping get more bags, it shows how selfish he is, and how he does not care
for the people in his village. In Powaqqatsi when the people are rowing boats in the water, there are
two people in the back of the boat that were not rowing. By not rowing the boat they show
individualism because they are setting themselves apart from the crowd. Those who are not rowing
show less sympathy toward the people they are with. In Prison Break, Michael Scofield was an

The author's main point of this essay was that we get so caught up in our lives that there is barely
any downtime to just be. She talks about how they signed her daughter up for soccer in the fall

John Knowles 's A Separate Peace
In the first few chapters of A Separate Peace alone, Gene Forrester is John Knowles. In the first
chapter, Gene is a grown man fifteen years in the future. He describes Devon School in the summer
session in 1942. Devon School is rarely mentioned in the book. In A Separate Peace: The War
Within the chronology states that in 1943, a year older than the book, he too went to a summer
session at Exeter Academy (Bryant, xi). Knowles, too had a tree that he and other boys jumped off
of, but he broke his foot and had to be on crutches (Bryant, xi). This book is a rough autobiography
of his life. Gene and the author John Knowles will be explained as WWII in their eyes, the
symbolism of Phineas, and the school and the older Gene. In A Separate Peace, the summer session
is for seniors who are training for the war. Gene and Phineas are sixteen and not eligible for the
draft. As the book states, they jump off the tree used for diving in the river. Gene says in the book
"The tree was tremendous, an irate, steely black steeple beside the river. I'd be damned if I climbed
it" (Knowles, 14). Similar to the book, Knowles probably thought the same thing after he broke his
foot.
In The War Within, Bryant states that A Separate Peace can be read as a war book. With this in
mind, it was only about two boys who were not of drafting age, but one to two years before it. In the
summer session, the teachers are a little less strict, but only to the boys under eighteen. Even then,

A Separate Peace Vs Dead Poets Society
After reading the novel A Separate Peace and watching the movie Dead Poets Society, many
similarities and differences are brought into view. Some similarities between the two are that in both
stories the boys are affected by a classmate's death, the boys are in secret societies, and the boys'
decisions are made because of the influences of outside pressures. The differences between A
Separate Peace and Dead Poets Society are the relations within the stories, the time periods the
stories are set in, and the situations the boys are put in throughout the story. The book A Separate

The outside pressures were the main reasons the boys acted out the way they did. An example is in
Dead Poets Society, Neil had wanted to take an easier class at the beginning of the school year, but
his father had rejected the idea. When Neil's father also did this with his want to become an actor, it
resulted in Neil taking his own life. The boys in Dead Poets Society were forced to do whatever
their parents wanted them to do. The pressures in A Separate Peace are different, but they are still
pressures that impact the way these boys act and think. One very important pressure in the novel A
Separate Peace is the war. The war played such a crucial event throughout the story because it was
the main reason they were all fidgety and worried at times, they never wanted to be drafted into the
war. Even though they knew they did not want to be in the war, they would go in a patriotic way if
they had to. This also lead to another problem with outside pressure. Finny was not physically able
to be drafted into any force, whether it be American or not. In the novel A Separate Peace, Finny
states on page 190, "They all gave me the same answer after they saw the medical report on me. The
answer was no soap. We can't use you". This was all because of his disability with the broken leg,
Finny's own leg was the issue. This caused him to be pressured because he could not do the right,

Persuasive Essay On A Separate Peace
Peace is very complex. It could happen when your young, or when your older and more
experienced. Peace can come from bright times or dark time, such as death. In the novel A Separate
Peace by John Knowles Gene finds peace in a very odd way. He has a quite "separate peace" from
everyone else. Staring off as one piece, braking off into a separate piece, and finally finding a
separate peace, Gene discovers he is himself, and not Finny. Without peace, people become
discombobulated. Before the casualty, Gene believes that he is Finny. They are one piece that cannot
be separated. If one of them fails to do something, it is the job of the other to succeed. We see this
when Gene puts on Finny's cloths when he is gone. "I never forgot, and that evening I put on his
cordovan shoes, his pants, and I looked for and finally found his pink shirt, neatly laundered in a
drawer.... But when I looked in the mirror it was no remote aristocrat I had become, no character out
of daydreams. I was Phineas" (Knowles 62). In addition to looking the part, he plays the part. When
Finny breaks his leg and can no longer be himself and play sports, Gene takes this role. Finny even
starts to train him for the 1944 Olympics, in exchange Gene tutors him. To add on to all of this, the
even leap from the tree together, as one. This causes ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Finny dies and Gene is left alone and a separate piece from Finny. However he is still thriving to

when I stood watching him being lowered into his family's strait–laced burial ground outside of

Analyzing Cicero's 'On Duties'
In "On Duties," Cicero argues that the moral connection between humankind should know no
boundaries. While making many arguments for this statement, the strongest point that Cicero makes
concludes that the art of speech ties all humans together and separates us from animals. In this
paper, I will argue that Cicero's view on the fellowship among the human race, is more plausible
than it might at first appear.
In order to understand his influence, you must understand Cicero's background. Cicero had a
remarkable political career during the time of the Roman Empire. Unlike most citizens during this
era, he believed in peace and unity among all humans. This was a different view than the Romans as
they fought for everything they wanted, and were ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Cicero believed in equality and peace, in a time where men were raised only to fight and be violent
to their neighbors. Cicero was a visionary who opened up a side to a common argument on war and
peace, that others had not thought of yet. Cicero believed that through the power of speech, we as
humans could overcome our violent primal urges and rise above our primate cousins. Cicero also
believed that through this natural connection between mankind, came moral obligations that needed
to be kept, no matter what time it was, whether it be peace or war time. To every argument ever
made, comes at least one counter argument. In order to not fall victim to the counter argument, it is
important to keep your moral compass aligned and to remember that every human was created
equal. It does not matter where you are on the developmental scale because as long as you are
human you are equal to those around you. Cicero may have found this out ahead of his time, but that
does not make his argument at all less valid. When it comes to the Just War Tradition, it is important
to keep all sides opinions in mind, as this moral agreement will be a part of every civilizations lives.
No matter how hard anyone tries to be peaceful, there will always be an enemy who refuses to settle
for anything but war. If everyone must agree to a set of rules that govern how and why each war

A Separate Peace Analysis
John Knowles' "A Separate Peace" takes place at a boarding school during World War II. Best
friends Gene and Finny have been inseparable during their time at the Devon School. This is until
reality hits Gene, and he slowly starts to realize that he is inferior to his best friend. Through the
unbalanced friendship between two teenagers in "A Separate Peace," Knowles illustrates that a loss
of identity may be present in a relationship if there is an unequal amount of power.
As Gene feels the obligation to lose himself to become Finny, Knowles shows us that a loss of
identity may be present in a relationship if there is an unequal amount of power. When Finny tells
Gene that he has to play sports in the place of Finny himself, Gene says, "I lost part of myself to him
then, and a soaring sense of freedom revealed that this must have been my purpose from the first: to
become a part of Phineas" (77). Gene loses who he is to become the powerful Finny because told
him to do so. He feels the need to give up his identity seeing that he has the order to do. This results
in an unequal friendship because a true friend would never force someone to do something that
would make them lose who they actually are. Gene and Finny's unbalanced friendship eventually
causes paranoia and insecurity on the less powerful side known as Gene because he is giving
himself up.
When Gene is quick to realize that him and Finny will never be of the same power, Knowles shows
us that a loss of identity may be present in a relationship if there is an unequal amount of power.
Gene realizes that Finny is someone who can do anything and he states that "He had never been
jealous of me for a second. Now I knew that there never was and never could be any rivalry between
us. I was not the same quality as he" (59). Gene's low self–esteem starts to build up as he explains
that no matter how hard he tries, he will never be as good and powerful as Phineas. Finny has
everything in his power and is capable of so many things also remaining his own person. However,
Gene feels the complete opposite as he understands that to become someone as mighty as Finny, he
has to change who he is to even get Finny to notice him as a threat. As a result of this unequal

The Characters Of Genenys In A Separate Peace By John Knowles
The word "naive" is an adjective used to describe someone "deficient in worldly wisdom or
informed judgment." The word "daring" is an adjective used to describe someone that is
"venturesomely bold in action or thought." What is the connection between these two
characteristics? They both describe the character Phineas, the central character of A Separate Peace.
In A Separate Peace, John Knowles employs dialogue and actions to characterize Phineas as a naive
and daring static character.
John Knowles implies Phineas is naive through the implementation of dialogue. Phineas confesses
to Gene that "[he] hope[s] [Gene is] having a pretty good time here... you can't come by yourself,
and at this teenage–period in life the proper person is your best pal." (48). The boys live in a
masculine society where they are expected to be strong. To expose one's feelings to someone else is
often considered "social suicide." Gene takes advantage of Phineas' naivetivé by not responding to
his declaration of friendship. Phineas also asserted that "when you really love something, then it
loves you back, in whatever way it has to love" (111). Phineas' philosophy is centered around a
world of youth of peace; he always tries to find the best in everyone. This naive attitude contrasts
with the cruel nature of the world, where wars and competitions are common occurrences. At Gene's
trial for Phineas' fall, Phineas asks Gene if "[he] was down at the bottom" in a concerned, friendly
tone. Phineas' fear of

Characterisation In A Separate Peace By John Knowles
Characterisation can be executed in many ways. An easy way to identify the importance of
characters in a novel is by paying attention to how they are characterised. In the first chapter of the
novel, A Separate Peace, John Knowles uses the relationships between Gene Forrester and the
Devon School, and between Gene and his friend Phineas (Finny), to characterise the narrator, Gene,
as a reminiscent man who is an intelligent, and thoughtful man that has felt much fear in his past.
The Devon School is a place of Gene's past, and it harbors much fear for him. When Gene was a
young man at the age of sixteen, he studied at the Devon School. When he returns fifteen years later
he comes to understand a memory from his past, "[U]nfamiliar with the absence of fear and what
that was like, I had not been able to identify its presence." (Knowles 10). This quotation is saying
that he had lived with enough, constant fear when he was a student there that it caused him to not
recognise the existence of his fear. While he looks at the outside of the school building, he notices
that, "[i]t seemed more sedate than I remembered it, more perpendicular and strait–laced, with
narrower windows and shinier woodwork, as though a coat of varnish had been put over everything
for better preservation... fifteen years before... the school wasn't as well kept up in those days;
perhaps varnish, along with everything else, had gone to war..." (Knowles 9). His thoughts appear to

How Can Sport Bring Peace in Troubled Communities?
Sport is a global language. It is often only regarded as a medium of entertainment and
professionalism, but the fact is that sport, although indirectly, aims and works towards certain other
factors, one among which is peace–building. The latter being of a major importance in troubled
communities, sport can thus be brought into play. At its best, sport can unite people, no matter what
their origin, background, religious belief or economic status. This global language also has the
ability to cross cultures, thus enabling sport–related programmes to overpass social and ethnic
divides within communities. Hence, such communities will provide a sustainable channel to
befitting human development and proper social integration. To begin, troubled communities are
those stricken by civil disorder or conflict within their borders and deprived of social stability. The
indicators of such communities include war, racial discrimination, high prevailing crime rate,
terrorism, corruption amongst many others. As a result of such phenomena, a large proportion of the
country's economic resources are destroyed. Human resources, natural resources and man–made
resources perish altogether– essential public institutions break down, food supplies become
deficient, poverty increases and families break down causing the country's socio–economic situation
to droop. Therefore, in such communities wherein the populations are victimised of social tension
and conflict and the

Theme Of Companionship In A Separate Peace
During the time I was reading A Separate Peace and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night–
time, I realized the books actually more things in common than I would've thought. One way the
two books are similar is how they both have a common theme, companionship. Another common
theme in both books is following the rules and how a lot of the characters chose to not do so. One
issue both books seem to share is the characters in each book seem to have a hard time getting along
with one another and communicating. While I was reading the two novels, they didn't seem that
similar to me, but once I finished the novels, I started to realize how alike they really are.
One common theme you can see through out the time of reading the two novels is companionship.
Companionship plays a big role in how the main characters act in each novel. In A Separate Peace,
companionship is demonstrated by Gene and Phineas becoming friends in the beginning of the novel
and having troubles, as friends, in the middle–to–late part of the novel. Gene and Phineas being
friends had a lot to do with most of their actions. Companionship is shown in The Curious Incident
of the Dog in the Night–Time between Christopher and his dad, Ed. Ed triggered some pretty
serious events in the book and some of them were because of Christopher. For example, Ed was the
reason Christopher ran away to his mother because he was scared of his dad. Also, Ed lied to
Christopher about his mom being alive because he was trying to protect him. Companionship is one
of the multiple common themes between the two novels and I think it's pretty clearly demonstrated
in both.
Another common theme between the two books is following the rules and how quite a few
characters from each novel chose not to follow them. A lot of the characters in each novel break the
rules or do something that's just morally wrong like lying. In The Curious Incident of the Dog in the
Night–Time, Christopher decides to keep investigating about the dog dying case even after his father
told him to stop investigating. Phineas breaks the rules in A Separate Peace when he falls out of the
tree hanging above the river and breaks his leg after he was told not to climb in the tree

Our Needs And Wants Essay
Our Needs and Wants: effects on our inner peace
Life, in general, has not changed over the years; it is only the surroundings and circumstances that
have changed. The way we choose to react to those changes, determines the direct effect on the
quality of our life. We need to focus on the need of distinguishing, between the ever–increasing
responsibilities on our shoulders and other insignificant matters that consume our precious time.
Our needs and wants are two distinct entities. We need to separate our needs from our wants in order
to achieve satisfaction. It is definitely not a simple matter. The dilemma is that we all want
everything, but we don't need everything we want. When we can quiet the unnecessary, we can give

a sport coach one day.
We should not be afraid to take small steps. There's something powerful about momentum...no
matter how little. Many times, the impossible is simply the untried. When we are immobilised with
fear, when each task ahead appears to be a huge one, when we are unable to lift ourselves to face it –
at those moments we can break the dilemma by using two simple words: "Do something!" By taking
some small steps, the required momentum will begin to come into our life.
Most people don't succeed because they are too afraid to even try. As incredible as it sounds, they

He tried to use all his presidential powers by making laws. Roosevelt passed 6 laws to make it easier

Sherman Act. This law declared illegal for all combinations "in restraint of trade." This law
ultimately failed because whenever he tried to use it in court the judge either just denied it or the

Characteristics Of Phinenys In A Separate Peace
What characteristics do leaders embody? Leaders are considered to be strong and caring with no
attention of being paid to their downfalls. In A Separate Peace, Phineas is a leader with flaws,
despite his high standing amongst others. John Knowles characterizes Phineas as a naive and daring
static character in his novel A "Separate Peace" by employing dialogue, action, and Gene's
descriptions and feelings towards him.
John Knowles implies Phineas is naive through the implementation of dialogue. Phineas confesses
to Gene that "[he] hope[s] [Gene is] having a pretty good time here... you can't come by yourself,
and at this teenage–period in life the proper person is your best pal" (48). The boys live in a
masculine society, which places an emphasis on strength. To expose one's feelings to someone else
is considered "social suicide." Therefore, Gene takes advantage of Phineas' naiveté by not
responding to his declaration of friendship. Phineas also asserts that "when you really love
something, then it loves you back, in whatever way it has to love" (111). Phineas' philosophy centers
around a world of youth of peace; he always attempts to find the best in everyone. This naive
attitude contrasts with the cruel nature of the world, where wars and competitions are common
occurrences. At Gene's trial for Phineas' fall, Phineas asks Gene if "[he] was down at the bottom"
(170) in a concerned, friendly tone. Phineas fears of Gene's betrayal; he cannot believe that his
friend would have the urge to push him out the tree. In order to protect his high opinion of Gene, he
alters the past in his mind to avoid facing the truth. This emphasizes his naiveté as the true events do
not align with what Phineas made up in his mind. At the hospital after Phineas's second fall,
following the trial, Gene explains to Phineas that he would "get things so scrambled up nobody
would know who to fight any more" and that "[he would] make a mess, a terrible mess...out of the
war'" (191). Phineas' world does not hold any fights or enmity. His good character is unrealistic in
this world. Consequently, the war would drive him to madness.

A Separate Peace Essay
"Your surroundings may change but your essence and your personality pretty much stay the same"
(Dewan). The setting of the novel A Separate Peace is at an all boys school located in New
Hampshire. The characters and plot are finely woven into the fabric of this institution. However,
would events in this novel turn out differently if the story was set in a public high school, with a
diverse environment? The characters and plot of A Separate Peace are not solely driven by their
surroundings because the boys would still break the rules, Gene would have internal conflicts, and
the war would affect the students. In this novel, there are multiple times that the characters break the
rules. In fact, Finny seems to live by the quote "life is short, break the rules" (Twain). Finny
demonstrates this when he convinces Gene to go with him to the beach during school hours,
violating the regulations. Another time the rules were disregarded was when Finny and Gene started
out each summer session by jumping from the tree. This was also against the rules, so Gene figured
that Phineas' accident was payment for disobeying. Therefore, even if the ambience was drastically
changed, the boys would continue to break the rules. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

John Knowles 's A Separate Peace
Marshall McLuhan, a Canadian philosopher and public intellectual once said that, "everybody tends
to merge his identity with other people... It's called being mass man". Mass man is what one would
describe as a person lacking any individuality or uniqueness. This relates to John Knowles's novel, A
Separate Peace through the idea of Gene's struggle with identity throughout the stories that he tells
due to his own lack of individuality. In the novel, Gene Forrester is a student at the Devon School, a
boarding school in New Hampshire. At Devon, Gene struggles with the concept of who he is, and
who he wants to be. This struggle is greatly influenced by Gene's best friend, Phineas, "Finny".

Later on in the novel, after Mr. Patch–Withers calls the boys into his office to consequence Finny for
wearing the Devon School tie as a belt.To get out of punishment, Finny makes up an elaborate lie
about why he needs to wear the tie, and saying that it is a tribute to the school, as well as a necessity
so that his pants did not fall down while at the headmaster's tea. This causes Mr. Patch–Withers to
laugh, something that the boys believe he has never done before. Gene reflects back on this moment
in awe, thinking about how "[he laughs] along with Finny, [his] best friend, and also unique, able to
get away with anything at all... He [gets] away with everything because of the extraordinary kind of
person he [is]. It [is] quite a compliment to [Gene], as a matter of fact, to have such a person choose
[him] for his best friend" (28). By saying that Finny is an "extraordinary person", and that it is a
"compliment to have him choose Gene to be his best friend", it can be concluded that Gene looks up
to Finny as a role model, and envies the fact that he is able to "get away with anything". Gene feels
that Phineas is so important to him and is such an inspiration to him, foreshadowing an adaptation to
Finny's identity, just like the previous quote.
In the middle of the novel, Knowles begins to show how Gene adapts to Phineas's identity, just as it
was foreshadowed in the beginning of the

Examples Of Figurative Language In A Separate Peace
An Explanation of Internal Conflict
In his novel, A Separate Peace, author John Knowles implements an army of literary devices to lure
and capture a reader's interest. If one were to turn to a single page in this novel, he/she would find
several devices. A heavily recurring theme is the internal conflict of the characters throughout the
story. Knowles incorporates the theme of inner conflict into several characters, not just a single, well
rounded character, such as Gene.
As previously stated, John Knowles uses a wide variety of literary devices, such as figurative
language. While reading Knowles novel, A Separate Peace, one can find multiple examples of

Many times throughout A Separate Peace, he utilizes imagery to do exactly that. Imagery is the use
of visually descriptive words and language in a story or novel. In the beginning of the novel,
Knowles exercises his knowledge of imagery by using dreary and dark images. "The ocean looked
dead too, dead gray waves hissing mordantly along the beach, which was gray and dead–looking
itself.(49). This passage relates to Gene later in the story. He feels terrible and dead inside from
knocking Finny off the branch. Even further in the story, Finny dies from another break in his leg,
which occurs because Gene broke his leg the first time. Gene feels exactly like the ocean again,
feeling as if darkness was taking over his life. On page 72, Devon is described by Gene as being
vacant of peace. "Peace had deserted Devon." The war had finally made it's way to the school, and
destroying peace and replacing it with fear and uncertainty. Gene feels devoid of peace after Finny
is injured, just as Devon does when the war closes in. He believes that he is the sole reason that his
best friend is dead, and this idea tears and rips his insides apart. Imagery may not be used as
frequently as figurative language or symbolism, but it is equal in

A Separate Peace: Three Symbols
A Separate Peace: Three Symbols
The three dichotomous symbols in A Separate Peace by John Knowles reinforce the innocence and
evil of the main characters, Finny and Gene. Beside the Devon School flow two rivers on opposite
sides of the school, the Naguamsett and the Devon. The Devon provides entertainment and
happiness for Gene and
Finny as they jump from the tree into the river and hold initiations into the
Super Suicide Society of the Summer Session. Finny, Gene, and their friends use the Devon's warm
water to play in during the carefree summer session. The Devon brings out Finny's carefree
character and personality when he jumps from the limbs of the tree. Not one Upper Middler in
Devon has ever jumped from the tree; Finny ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Finny is not in school, no longer shall the students have their carefree attitudes, and the class
officials and masters now enforce the rules at Devon. Gene becomes like the winter session by
saving a cold blast for the enemy. The winter lives to destroy the warmth of the summer and does so
by unleashing an unpredictable frigid blizzard. Likewise, Gene

The Pros And Cons Of Munchy's Banning Teens
Should Munchy's Ban Teens? Munchy's just won't allow kids my age in unless we are adults.
Mr.Jones is the owner of munchy's which is the restaurant near my school. Since school started he's
been unhappy. He wishes more adults would come in. so he bans all teens. Honestly i believe that he
has every right to ban who ever he wants from his restaurant.
However profits are going down. During the school year minors tend to come the restaurant more
than adults. One customers said," during lunch hours i see more students come in and crowding
everyone. Most adults spend more money than students. Business workers complained," kids come
in and take forever to order but don't even spend that much money and they don't say excuse me
they just ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A man told me yesterday," almost everyday i have a headache from worker and just want some
peace and quiet". There are jobs where people get piles and piles of work. A woman told a group of
teens," can you guys lower your voices? I'm trying to get some work done". Teens music have some
words that some adults really don't like. Mr. Jones promised," NO MUSIC! NO CELL PHONES!
NO STUDENTS!".
Nevertheless some people don't like being around children. Once a couple told me," teens are so
immature and rude". Parents love their kids to death but when i ask these two parents the told me,"
They just want some alone time because they are constantly around their own children. Teachers are
around teen and kids 24/7. They never want to come in during their break. Mrs. Blake a math
teacher told me," i love teaching but when its my break the last ting i want to be around is teens".
Some argue that Mr. Jone doesn't have the right to ban teens. Teen need a place to eat too. Yeah they
can get loud and rude, but they may be able to bring in business. Teens complain about adults
drinking too much or saying bad things to them. Nobody should be left out, but there's always other
places to eat. Some adults should take that into

The Quest For Peace And Justice
When people think of speeches, they usually refer to important people talking about important
topics. The idea of importance often differs time to time ranging from Abortions to Gun Laws.
Martin Luther King, JR. is one of those important figures, as he led a variety of peaceful protests
from the boycott for Rosa Parks to demonstrations in Birmingham in the fight for Civil Rights. Not
to mention, he led the nonwhites in a peaceful resistance of nonviolence against unfair racial views.
Out of all of his speeches, one unique one which stands out is "The Quest for Peace and Justice." It
shows the concept where mankind has still not matured enough to where each person of differing
race is able to live next to each other peacefully. Unless mankind can get past the walls of racial
injustice, ignorance of poverty, and the true evil of war, then the battle against racial prejudice will
end in the worst scenario possible. Mankind already has the ability to solve all of its obstacles by
uniting together as a family connected by love and god. In fact, there are two other speeches
comparable in terms of influence and emotion. The most commonly known "I Have a Dream"
speech on August 28th, 1963 and "A Time to Break Silence" as King believes the people must see
the war from the perspective of the Vietnamese as a peaceful approach is the best approach. Of
course, "The Quest for Peace and Justice" is inferior to those two simply because it is overloading
on information, unclear, and unheard

How Did The Treaty Of Versailles Punish Germany

  • 1. How Did The Treaty Of Versailles Punish Germany The Treaty of Versailles is a peace treaty, where it basically punishes Germany. It makes them powerless to a point that they cannot be able to create another war. This treaty was way too harsh on the Germans. It is a fact that they were not the only ones fighting in the war, and they should not be the only one, who should be punished. Everyone must take responsibilities for their drastic decisions. All of the major countries had a role in this war, not only Germany. The Germans were stripped down of everything they had. It left Germans helplessly and made to live in poverty. In order to pay off the damages that were made, they were treated like slaves. Instead of making peace with Germany, the Treaty of Versailles was sparking another fire ... • 3. A Separate Peace: Movie Analysis The film and writing industry go hand in hand, as they often inspire one another. As a result, the translation of many novels into movie format and vice versa vary in success. For instance, many people prefer the film format over the novel since it is usually less time consuming and requires less active participation. However, films tend to overlook significant details which aid the viewer's understanding of the story. Therefore, the two separate forms of media have too many differences to portray the same work of fiction accurately, as they both have their strengths and weaknesses that appeal to different types of stories and plots. Movies tend to add less detail than their counterpart, but allow viewers to understand what the movie is about visually. Additionally, there are some differences in movies which set them apart from the novel. In the movie adaptation of A Separate Peace by John Knowles, there were significant changes that were made which changed the viewer's understanding of the story, such as the change of perspective. This made viewers possess the option of deciding whose perspective to sympathize with, instead of giving sympathy to the narrator narrating in the first person. Another important difference is the exclusion of the Devon and Naguamsett river. These two rivers played a significant role in symbolism early in the novel but were excluded in the movie. It would have given viewers a deeper meaning of how life was outside and inside the Devon school. Lastly, the marble staircase was intentionally excluded from the movie, because the possibility of spoiling the ending. In the novel, it was difficult to connect the marble staircase with anything as it was subtle foreshadowing. However, as the movie progresses, viewers might ponder the reason why it was shown in the beginning, and eventually connect it with the tragic end of Phineas falling down. On the other hand, there were similarities between the two medias, which were key to the story's plot, such as Gene and Phineas's, this shows the changes to the movie adaptation create a ... • 5. A Red Light For Difflaws By Frank Trippets Analysis We are all lawbreakers, most of us just do not realize it yet. In Frank Trippets excerpt "A Red Light for Scofflaws", explains how there are many people in the United States that break minor laws and think its "ok" to do so because there are worse things you could have done. He tries to persuade us to stop all of the nonsense of breaking minor laws. He continues by explaining how our slogan should be "You're a fool if you obey the rules." The author's tone is disgruntled towards most if not all americans. The author's argument is valid because the streets are littered with trash and you might find some gum on your shoes once in awhile, and at the same time people everywhere, whether it be a party at a house or on the streets in a back alley, are noisy and disrupt the peace that silence provides. ... In the novel, A Separate Peace by John Knowles, some of the students of the Devon School try to escape their lives to create new ones in their imagination. Gene thinks of excuses and others stop believing in the world that they are living in. The war makes most of the kids create delusions about themselves and the others around them. The theme, one's internal war is derived from external struggles, is demonstrated when Gene cannot face his delusions about Finny, Leper's brain pulls tricks on itself, and Finny trying to make himself no longer believe in the war. Finny tries to hide the truth from himself about the war when he thinks that the politicians have "made it all up" (115). Finny's theory about the war all being a setup helps him forget that he actually will not be able to compete in the Olympics or fight for his country. • 9. A Separate Piece Literary Analysis When many things break, they often never return back as healthy as it was before. In John Knowles' A Separate Piece, Gene and Finny are two best friends who go through many hardships together as their years pass at the Devon School. All of the boys in attendance are preparing to be enlisted in the war that is going on outside of school but they each are fighting their own inside themselves. In A Separate Piece, Knowles utilizes the allegory of Finny's broken leg to represent the difficult times throughout a friendship. As Gene comes back to the Devon School fifteen years later he revisits certain sites that have important meaning to him. While he is tracing through the years he has spent there many things come to his attention that he hadn't noticed before. He makes his way to the place of the marble staircase and says, "The marble must be unusually hard. That seemed very likely, only too likely, although with all my thought about these stairs exceptional hardness had not occurred to me. It was surprising that I had overlooked that, that crucial fact." (Knowles, 2) This ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Gene believes that Finny had started the fight because no one else would have been able to convince that many people to come along. "We ended the fight in the only way possible; all of us turned on Phineas."(Knowles, 92) He was the weak one of the group, so he got left behind from the others and that is how the fight ended. This means that Gene and the other boys are evolving and coming together as a group while Finny is not. "No, of course I won't break it again. Isn't the bone supposed to be stronger when it grows together over a place where it's been broken once?" (Knowles, 93) Finny says this to Gene because he believes that things will get better, and he will come back stronger. This also represents their friendship because it was broken at one point and it will never fully be what it was ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. Allusions In A Separate Peace A Separate Peace by John Knowles about a boy named Gene, who returns to his boarding school after graduating to remember the memories from his time there. The book takes place during the early years of World War II, which greatly affects the lives of the main characters. Knowles utilizes many symbols with religious undertones throughout A Separate Peace including Finny's fall from the tree, Gene's fall into the Naguamsett, and Finny's unexpected death. Finny fall from the tree on the bank of the Devon river is one of the many religious references in A Separate Peace. During the winter session, the other boys become suspicious about the mystery surrounding Finny's fall. Brinker Hadley and his friends decide to investigate Finny's accident by holding a trial after hours, in the First Building. When the truth begins to come out from the people present that day, and Finny does not want to hear it. He becomes angry, not wanting to believe that his best friend could sabotage him this way. He storms out of the First Building onto the marble staircase where every footstep can be heard, and everyone inside the building heard his body fall clumsily down the steps. Finny's leg breaks again but this time it is a "much cleaner break...a simple fracture" (180). This event to some extent is a religious symbol because when Gene's loss of innocence causes the break it is disastrous but when no one maliciously causes the break it is much cleaner. Finny undergoes the surgery to repair his leg but marrow from his bone escapes and stops his heart. Gene says, "I did not cry then or ever about Finny... I could not escape the feeling that this was my own funeral, and you do not cry in that case" (194). Finny's death is a religious symbol because Finny dies through no fault of his own. • 13. Song Analysis Of The Secret Life Of Bees The Secret Life of Bees, takes place during the Civil Rights Movement in South Carolina. Lily Owens is a 14 year old girl who carries the senseless burden of killing her mother. She destroys herself believing that she killed her mother and can't come to peace with the accident she caused that caused her mother to die. Later in the book she comes to find out that her mother abandoned T. Ray and her. She is now at a different conundrum and believes her mother should be hoping she'll forgive her instead of her mother forgiving her. She learns form the Boatrights that she needs to come to piece with her mothers decisions and for the death of her mother. She notices how Mary comes to piece when she sings, "Oh! Susanna", and helps her realize we all have our own trials and hardships but we also have our own way of coming to peace with our actions. Josh Garrels sings the song,"Farther Along", and to me this is a song of joy. The song does have a somber tone to the song. "I wondered why the good man dies, the bad man thrives and Jesus cries because he loves em' both". This phrase tells me how much Jesus loves us. He is not only crying because a good man died, or because one of his children has fallen far off track, but he is crying for them both. He loves them both. "There's much more to life than we've been told it's full of beauty that will unfold". Life is full of ugliness and hardships. This proclaims that there is more than all of that and we will all one day see this beauty ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 15. Tybalt As A Foil For Benvolio In Shakespeare's Romeo And... William Shakespeare created and developed the Character Tybalt as a foil for Benvolio in his play Romeo and Juliet. The two characters share some important similarities, examples of these include the fact that Tybalt and Benvolio are cousins to the main roles Romeo and Juliet (Tybalt is cousin to Juliet and Benvolio is cousin to Romeo), They are both very family oriented, this means that they both are loyal supporters of their family and family name. Some differences in character regarding Tybalt and Benvolio are that while Tybalt is Insensitive, Benvolio is good–hearted. Whenever Tybalt is eager to fight, Benvolio comes in to save the day and tries to make peace. And While Tybalt Doesn't care about the effects that his actions have on others, ... • 17. A Separate Peace Character Analysis A Life of Naiveté As per the ancient saying, experience, which destroys innocence, also leads one back to it. In this book, A Separate Peace by John Knowles, the protagonist Gene Forrester visits the prep school he attended when he was younger –– The Devon School. As he wanders through the campus to find a tree, he goes into a flashback to when he was sixteen. In the picture, there's Phineas (Finny), the super athlete, who also happens to be the roommate of Gene, and Elwin Lepellier, sadly given the nickname "Leper." Finny declares they should jump out of the tree; Gene obeys but no one else does. This episode introduces us to their quasi–friendship, which you know, was just fine until Gene decides to go all whacky on his best friend. John Knowles uses Gene's explanation of causing Finny to fall, the death of Finny, and Leper's eventual insanity to show that living in a state of innocence can destroy an individual. First, Gene's justification of causing Finny to fall is one of the earliest occurrences in the book exhibiting the inner battles of feelings like anger and jealousy. "He had never been jealous of me for a second. Now I knew that there never was and could have been any rivalry between us. I was not the same quality as he. I couldn't stand this" (51). In this quote, Gene was frustrated as he felt that he was being dragged to watch Leper jump out of the tree. As he received the explanation by Finny about how studying came "naturally" to Gene, he understood that Finny never had the intention of sabotaging Gene's stay at Devon. He couldn't help but think that Finny had a better stature as a human which caused him to jounce the tree limb and make Finny fall. Then, Knowles uses the death of Phineas to describe a funereal environment and an aloofness created inside of Gene. "He was incomprehensible. I felt an extremely cold chill along my back and neck, that was all... I did not cry then or ever about Finny. I did not cry even when I stood watching him being lowered into his family's strait–laced burial ground outside of Boston. I could not escape a feeling that this was my own funeral, and you do not cry in that case" (185–186). In the last quote, Gene appeared to be quite intolerant to the fact that Finny ... • 19. John Knowles A Separate Peace Historical Influence on A Separate Peace There are many things that can change how an author may write, one of the more important things is the way that history and society can change an author's opinions and thus influence their writing. History can be influential into two ways, either by past experiences and the expectations that arise out of them or contemporary forces in the author's life as they write their book. The writing of A Separate Peace was influenced by both contemporary and past historical forces in John Knowles' life; these include his own personal experiences, the return of the draft in World War II, and the stigma that arose for all soldiers with PTSD in World War II due to ignorance and a lack of sympathy. The rising popularity of boarding schools in the United States began in the 1940s, which also coincides with when the story of A Separate Peace occurs. The book takes place at a boarding school called "The Devon School" which is loosely based off of Phillips Exeter Academy, a school at which John Knowles attended before graduating and going to Yale. A considerable amount of A Separate Peace is based off of Knowles' own experience at Phillips Exeter Academy; he had altered a few details to make the story more entertaining to the readers. A Seperate Peace Essay A Separate Peace Essay In the novel, A Separate Peace by John Knowles, the protagonist, Gene Forrester "battled" within himself to find "a separate peace" and in this process directed his emotions at Phineas, his roommate. Forrester and Phineas formed the illusion of a great companionship, but there was a "silent rivalry" between them in Forrester's mind. Self deceptions in Forrester led him to believe that Phineas was "out to get him" (Forrester). Subconsciously Forrester jounced the limb of the tree and forced Phineas to fall and break his leg. Self deceptions inside of Gene Forrester led him to believe that Phineas was "out to get him". Forrester realized that, "Finny had deliberately set out to wreck my studies" (45), when Phineas said, "I'd kill myself out of jealous envy" (44) (if Forrester was valedictorian). Having believed Phineas, Forrester came to another realization that Phineas had created blitzball and the Super Suicide Society to distract him (Forrester) from being "the best". Phineas did not know that Forrester needed to study in order to get good grades; "I didn't know you needed to study," (50) he said when Forrester wanted to stay and study rather than go to the Super Suicide Society meeting. Phineas thought that academics came naturally to Forrester as athletics came to him (Phineas). Forrester took Phineas trying to be a friend as him trying to distract for his (Forrester's) academics. • 25. First Three Laws Of Nature By Thomas Hobbes The first three laws of nature according to Thomas Hobbes were a way to put an end to the state of war. These laws are based on the idea of a social contract between two human beings that involves mutual rights between parties. In this answer I will describe how these laws can bring about peace in society. Since all of these laws are brought together through peace, according to Hobbes the first law deals with seeking out peace where war is not an option. Hobbes believes that in order for man to preserve life he must seek out peace and if peace is achieved this will prevent us from the state of war. In today's society our goal is to advance the global peace system by supporting and collaborating with peacebuilding efforts. The second law of nature deals with the surrendering of our natural rights in order to achieve peace that we are seeking. This law is the foundation for human justice but because of the human desire for power, there is always an incentive to break this contract despite the logic of the third law and the natural mandate to preserve our own lives (Hobbes; Leviathan Chapter 14–16). Other natural laws and eventually the concept of sovereignty must come into play in order to preserve functionality of this third law (Hobbes; Leviathan Chapter 14–16). According to Hobbes if all individuals follow these three natural laws there is a greater chance of peace in society. In a social contract between individuals, there is an agreement to give up their natural rights. Even though Romeo and Juliet are from these two families, they defy the hatred and fall in love with each other. Throughout the story, many characters are Foil characters, which means two characters contrast each other to highlight particular qualities. An example of two foil characters in the play is Tybalt and Benvolio. Tybalt is Lord Capulet's nephew and Juliet's cousin. Although he has few lines, he influences the entire course of the play to a degree that exceeds his seemingly minor role. (Author) Tybalt has an angry, stubborn nature. He is always ready for a good fight and spends most of his time baiting the Montagues into fights. • 29. Similarities Between Livry And Livy Often times small changes in how a story is told can make a big difference in the meaning and significance of that story. This truth can be observed in comparing Livy's work "The History of Rome" and Niccolo Machiavelli's Discourses on Livy. Machiavelli and Livy tell the same histories of Rome but Machiavelli changes details in the Livy's account to support a point that he is attempting to make through the story. A good example of Machiavelli altering Livy's account is the account of the Roman treaty with the Samnites. Machiavelli strategically leaves out parts of Livy's account to help support his points about glory in defeat and breaking treaties. Livy's account begins with Rome hearing the news that the Roman army had negotiated a peace treaty with the Samnites after the Samnites surrounded the Roman army. The news of a shameful surrender sent the Roman people into a state of mourning. After the Roman soldiers returned home in defeat, the Senate brought up the issue of the peace treaty to be discussed. The first person to be called upon to speak was Spurius Postumius, one of the leaders of the defeated Roman army and one of the negotiators of the peace treaty. Postumius rose and gave a proposition to the Senate for how the peace treaty could be dissolved: This statement will bear witness whether it was myself or your legions that I spared when I bound myself by a guarantee which may have been disgraceful or forced upon me, but it is not binding on the Roman people since ... In the novel A Separate Peace, WW2 is raging in Europe and in the Pacific with men dying by the thousands each month, yet at the Vermont preparatory school of Devon a peace independent of the War exists where there at is no fear of death, loss of one's sanity and conscience, and fear of degradation. This is all until a cloud of hostility forms over Devon and over the lives of the two main characters, Gene and Finny. This competition is mostly marked by Gene's jealousy over Finny's athletic ability and popularity in relation to his. During this time, both desire to just be friends, but Gene in particular has trouble overcoming his hostility, making the pursuit of peace seem difficult very difficult. This is very similar to how the main character in the poem "Peace" by George Herbert had extreme difficulty finding peace at first as he was unable to search deep enough and let the hostility wear away. The real tipping point in the novel is when Gene breaks the branch in the tree that Finny was standing on, causing him to fall and shatter his leg. • 33. Symbolism In John Knowles A Separate Peace The book, "A Separate Peace," by John Knowles can be interpreted more than one way. You can take it literally, or look into the symbolic meaning of the landmarks of the Devon school, including the two "fearful sites" Gene visited in the beginning. As stated in the book by Gene, everything in the time period revolved around the war. This includes the great symbolism used, so mainly the tree, the Devon River, and the Naguamsett River. The Devon and Naguamsett Rivers both run through the campus of Devon. They are exact opposites (pg. 40). The Devon River is clean, freshwater, and well dammed up. It is described as being a small, narrow river fringed by pine and birch (pg. 42) On the other hand, the Naguamsett River is described as muddy and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is also the bank of the Devon River that the "fearful" tree is located (pg. 4 and pg. 43–44). Up to the point of Finny's accident, it is one of the calmest spots on campus. In fact, Gene directly connects it to the proud sight of Finny standing on one foot on the branch "like a river god", and seeming to "transcend gravity." On the contrary, the Naguamsett is a rough saltwater river. It is the war itself: dark and unknown. The Naguamsett is dangerous just like the war going on, and scary like the possibilities of draft or enlistment. I also think that the rivers compare well to the two main characters, Finny and Gene. Gene is rough and unpredictable (pg. 30–32, pg. 34, and pg. 48) like the Naguamsett River. He is also the one to acknowledge the dark qualities of the war more. Gene is less stable (pg. 88–89), and small things can quickly change his attitude. Finny, though, is a source of fun for everyone (pg. 18–19, pg. 24, and 78–80). He is loyal, charming, and everyone knows he is a stable presence at Devon (pg. 10 and pg. 12–13). Finny is more like the Devon River, because he is adventurous, but controlled enough so that he is a safe influence. • 39. John Knowles 's A Separate Peace In the first few chapters of A Separate Peace alone, Gene Forrester is John Knowles. In the first chapter, Gene is a grown man fifteen years in the future. He describes Devon School in the summer session in 1942. Devon School is rarely mentioned in the book. In A Separate Peace: The War Within the chronology states that in 1943, a year older than the book, he too went to a summer session at Exeter Academy (Bryant, xi). Knowles, too had a tree that he and other boys jumped off of, but he broke his foot and had to be on crutches (Bryant, xi). This book is a rough autobiography of his life. Gene and the author John Knowles will be explained as WWII in their eyes, the symbolism of Phineas, and the school and the older Gene. In A Separate Peace, the summer session is for seniors who are training for the war. Gene and Phineas are sixteen and not eligible for the draft. As the book states, they jump off the tree used for diving in the river. Gene says in the book "The tree was tremendous, an irate, steely black steeple beside the river. I'd be damned if I climbed it" (Knowles, 14). Similar to the book, Knowles probably thought the same thing after he broke his foot. In The War Within, Bryant states that A Separate Peace can be read as a war book. With this in mind, it was only about two boys who were not of drafting age, but one to two years before it. The pressures in A Separate Peace are different, but they are still pressures that impact the way these boys act and think. One very important pressure in the novel A Separate Peace is the war. The war played such a crucial event throughout the story because it was the main reason they were all fidgety and worried at times, they never wanted to be drafted into the war. Even though they knew they did not want to be in the war, they would go in a patriotic way if they had to. This also lead to another problem with outside pressure. Finny was not physically able to be drafted into any force, whether it be American or not. In the novel A Separate Peace, Finny states on page 190, "They all gave me the same answer after they saw the medical report on me. The answer was no soap. We can't use you". • 43. Persuasive Essay On A Separate Peace Peace is very complex. It could happen when your young, or when your older and more experienced. Peace can come from bright times or dark time, such as death. In the novel A Separate Peace by John Knowles Gene finds peace in a very odd way. He has a quite "separate peace" from everyone else. Staring off as one piece, braking off into a separate piece, and finally finding a separate peace, Gene discovers he is himself, and not Finny. Without peace, people become discombobulated. Before the casualty, Gene believes that he is Finny. They are one piece that cannot be separated. If one of them fails to do something, it is the job of the other to succeed. We see this when Gene puts on Finny's cloths when he is gone. "I never forgot, and that evening I put on his cordovan shoes, his pants, and I looked for and finally found his pink shirt, neatly laundered in a drawer.... But when I looked in the mirror it was no remote aristocrat I had become, no character out of daydreams. I was Phineas" (Knowles 62). In addition to looking the part, he plays the part. When Finny breaks his leg and can no longer be himself and play sports, Gene takes this role. Finny even starts to train him for the 1944 Olympics, in exchange Gene tutors him. While making many arguments for this statement, the strongest point that Cicero makes concludes that the art of speech ties all humans together and separates us from animals. In this paper, I will argue that Cicero's view on the fellowship among the human race, is more plausible than it might at first appear. In order to understand his influence, you must understand Cicero's background. Cicero had a remarkable political career during the time of the Roman Empire. Cicero also believed that through this natural connection between mankind, came moral obligations that needed to be kept, no matter what time it was, whether it be peace or war time. • 47. A Separate Peace Analysis John Knowles' "A Separate Peace" takes place at a boarding school during World War II. Best friends Gene and Finny have been inseparable during their time at the Devon School. This is until reality hits Gene, and he slowly starts to realize that he is inferior to his best friend. Through the unbalanced friendship between two teenagers in "A Separate Peace," Knowles illustrates that a loss of identity may be present in a relationship if there is an unequal amount of power. As Gene feels the obligation to lose himself to become Finny, Knowles shows us that a loss of identity may be present in a relationship if there is an unequal amount of power. When Finny tells Gene that he has to play sports in the place of Finny himself, Gene says, "I lost part of myself to him then, and a soaring sense of freedom revealed that this must have been my purpose from the first: to become a part of Phineas" (77). Gene loses who he is to become the powerful Finny because told him to do so. He feels the need to give up his identity seeing that he has the order to do. This results in an unequal friendship because a true friend would never force someone to do something that would make them lose who they actually are. Gene and Finny's unbalanced friendship eventually causes paranoia and insecurity on the less powerful side known as Gene because he is giving himself up. When Gene is quick to realize that him and Finny will never be of the same power, Knowles shows us that a loss of identity may be present in a relationship if there is an unequal amount of power. Gene realizes that Finny is someone who can do anything and he states that "He had never been jealous of me for a second. Now I knew that there never was and never could be any rivalry between us. I was not the same quality as he" (59). Gene's low self–esteem starts to build up as he explains that no matter how hard he tries, he will never be as good and powerful as Phineas. Finny has everything in his power and is capable of so many things also remaining his own person. However, Gene feels the complete opposite as he understands that to become someone as mighty as Finny, he has to change who he is to even get Finny to notice him as a threat. In A Separate Peace, John Knowles employs dialogue and actions to characterize Phineas as a naive and daring static character. John Knowles implies Phineas is naive through the implementation of dialogue. Phineas confesses to Gene that "[he] hope[s] [Gene is] having a pretty good time here... you can't come by yourself, and at this teenage–period in life the proper person is your best pal." (48). The boys live in a masculine society where they are expected to be strong. To expose one's feelings to someone else is often considered "social suicide." Gene takes advantage of Phineas' naivetivé by not responding to his declaration of friendship. Phineas also asserted that "when you really love something, then it loves you back, in whatever way it has to love" (111). Phineas' philosophy is centered around a world of youth of peace; he always tries to find the best in everyone. This naive attitude contrasts with the cruel nature of the world, where wars and competitions are common occurrences. • 51. Characterisation In A Separate Peace By John Knowles Characterisation can be executed in many ways. An easy way to identify the importance of characters in a novel is by paying attention to how they are characterised. In the first chapter of the novel, A Separate Peace, John Knowles uses the relationships between Gene Forrester and the Devon School, and between Gene and his friend Phineas (Finny), to characterise the narrator, Gene, as a reminiscent man who is an intelligent, and thoughtful man that has felt much fear in his past. The Devon School is a place of Gene's past, and it harbors much fear for him. When Gene was a young man at the age of sixteen, he studied at the Devon School. When he returns fifteen years later he comes to understand a memory from his past, "[U]nfamiliar with the absence of fear and what that was like, I had not been able to identify its presence." (Knowles 10). This quotation is saying that he had lived with enough, constant fear when he was a student there that it caused him to not recognise the existence of his fear. While he looks at the outside of the school building, he notices that, "[i]t seemed more sedate than I remembered it, more perpendicular and strait–laced, with narrower windows and shinier woodwork, as though a coat of varnish had been put over everything for better preservation... fifteen years before... the school wasn't as well kept up in those days; perhaps varnish, along with everything else, had gone to war..." • 53. How Can Sport Bring Peace in Troubled Communities? Sport is a global language. It is often only regarded as a medium of entertainment and professionalism, but the fact is that sport, although indirectly, aims and works towards certain other factors, one among which is peace–building. The latter being of a major importance in troubled communities, sport can thus be brought into play. At its best, sport can unite people, no matter what their origin, background, religious belief or economic status. This global language also has the ability to cross cultures, thus enabling sport–related programmes to overpass social and ethnic divides within communities. Hence, such communities will provide a sustainable channel to befitting human development and proper social integration. To begin, troubled communities are those stricken by civil disorder or conflict within their borders and deprived of social stability. The indicators of such communities include war, racial discrimination, high prevailing crime rate, terrorism, corruption amongst many others. As a result of such phenomena, a large proportion of the country's economic resources are destroyed. Human resources, natural resources and man–made resources perish altogether– essential public institutions break down, food supplies become deficient, poverty increases and families break down causing the country's socio–economic situation to droop. Therefore, in such communities wherein the populations are victimised of social tension and conflict and the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 55. Theme Of Companionship In A Separate Peace During the time I was reading A Separate Peace and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night– time, I realized the books actually more things in common than I would've thought. One way the two books are similar is how they both have a common theme, companionship. Another common theme in both books is following the rules and how a lot of the characters chose to not do so. One issue both books seem to share is the characters in each book seem to have a hard time getting along with one another and communicating. While I was reading the two novels, they didn't seem that similar to me, but once I finished the novels, I started to realize how alike they really are. One common theme you can see through out the time of reading the two novels is companionship. Companionship plays a big role in how the main characters act in each novel. In A Separate Peace, companionship is demonstrated by Gene and Phineas becoming friends in the beginning of the novel and having troubles, as friends, in the middle–to–late part of the novel. Gene and Phineas being friends had a lot to do with most of their actions. Companionship is shown in The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night–Time between Christopher and his dad, Ed. Ed triggered some pretty serious events in the book and some of them were because of Christopher. For example, Ed was the reason Christopher ran away to his mother because he was scared of his dad. Also, Ed lied to Christopher about his mom being alive because he was trying to protect him. Companionship is one of the multiple common themes between the two novels and I think it's pretty clearly demonstrated in both. Another common theme between the two books is following the rules and how quite a few characters from each novel chose not to follow them. A lot of the characters in each novel break the rules or do something that's just morally wrong like lying. In The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night–Time, Christopher decides to keep investigating about the dog dying case even after his father told him to stop investigating. Phineas breaks the rules in A Separate Peace when he falls out of the tree hanging above the river and breaks his leg after he was told not to climb in the tree ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 63. Characteristics Of Phinenys In A Separate Peace What characteristics do leaders embody? Leaders are considered to be strong and caring with no attention of being paid to their downfalls. In A Separate Peace, Phineas is a leader with flaws, despite his high standing amongst others. John Knowles characterizes Phineas as a naive and daring static character in his novel A "Separate Peace" by employing dialogue, action, and Gene's descriptions and feelings towards him. John Knowles implies Phineas is naive through the implementation of dialogue. Phineas confesses to Gene that "[he] hope[s] [Gene is] having a pretty good time here... you can't come by yourself, and at this teenage–period in life the proper person is your best pal" (48). The boys live in a masculine society, which places an emphasis on strength. To expose one's feelings to someone else is considered "social suicide." Therefore, Gene takes advantage of Phineas' naiveté by not responding to his declaration of friendship. Phineas also asserts that "when you really love something, then it loves you back, in whatever way it has to love" (111). Phineas' philosophy centers around a world of youth of peace; he always attempts to find the best in everyone. This naive attitude contrasts with the cruel nature of the world, where wars and competitions are common occurrences. At Gene's trial for Phineas' fall, Phineas asks Gene if "[he] was down at the bottom" (170) in a concerned, friendly tone. Phineas fears of Gene's betrayal; he cannot believe that his friend would have the urge to push him out the tree. In order to protect his high opinion of Gene, he alters the past in his mind to avoid facing the truth. This emphasizes his naiveté as the true events do not align with what Phineas made up in his mind. At the hospital after Phineas's second fall, following the trial, Gene explains to Phineas that he would "get things so scrambled up nobody would know who to fight any more" and that "[he would] make a mess, a terrible mess...out of the war'" (191). • 65. A Separate Peace Essay "Your surroundings may change but your essence and your personality pretty much stay the same" (Dewan). The setting of the novel A Separate Peace is at an all boys school located in New Hampshire. The characters and plot are finely woven into the fabric of this institution. However, would events in this novel turn out differently if the story was set in a public high school, with a diverse environment? The characters and plot of A Separate Peace are not solely driven by their surroundings because the boys would still break the rules, Gene would have internal conflicts, and the war would affect the students. In this novel, there are multiple times that the characters break the rules. In fact, Finny seems to live by the quote "life is short, break the rules" (Twain). Finny demonstrates this when he convinces Gene to go with him to the beach during school hours, violating the regulations. Another time the rules were disregarded was when Finny and Gene started out each summer session by jumping from the tree. This was also against the rules, so Gene figured that Phineas' accident was payment for disobeying. Therefore, even if the ambience was drastically changed, the boys would continue to break the rules. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It's called being mass man". Mass man is what one would describe as a person lacking any individuality or uniqueness. This relates to John Knowles's novel, A Separate Peace through the idea of Gene's struggle with identity throughout the stories that he tells due to his own lack of individuality. In the novel, Gene Forrester is a student at the Devon School, a boarding school in New Hampshire. At Devon, Gene struggles with the concept of who he is, and who he wants to be. This struggle is greatly influenced by Gene's best friend, Phineas, "Finny". Gene looks up to Finny as both a friend and a role ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Later on in the novel, after Mr. Patch–Withers calls the boys into his office to consequence Finny for wearing the Devon School tie as a belt.To get out of punishment, Finny makes up an elaborate lie about why he needs to wear the tie, and saying that it is a tribute to the school, as well as a necessity so that his pants did not fall down while at the headmaster's tea. This causes Mr. Patch–Withers to laugh, something that the boys believe he has never done before. Gene reflects back on this moment in awe, thinking about how "[he laughs] along with Finny, [his] best friend, and also unique, able to get away with anything at all... He [gets] away with everything because of the extraordinary kind of person he [is]. It [is] quite a compliment to [Gene], as a matter of fact, to have such a person choose [him] for his best friend" (28). By saying that Finny is an "extraordinary person", and that it is a "compliment to have him choose Gene to be his best friend", it can be concluded that Gene looks up to Finny as a role model, and envies the fact that he is able to "get away with anything". Gene feels that Phineas is so important to him and is such an inspiration to him, foreshadowing an adaptation to Finny's identity, just like the previous quote. If one were to turn to a single page in this novel, he/she would find several devices. A heavily recurring theme is the internal conflict of the characters throughout the story. He feels terrible and dead inside from knocking Finny off the branch. Even further in the story, Finny dies from another break in his leg, which occurs because Gene broke his leg the first time. Gene feels exactly like the ocean again, feeling as if darkness was taking over his life. On page 72, Devon is described by Gene as being vacant of peace. "Peace had deserted Devon." The war had finally made it's way to the school, and destroying peace and replacing it with fear and uncertainty. Gene feels devoid of peace after Finny is injured, just as Devon does when the war closes in. • 77. The Quest For Peace And Justice When people think of speeches, they usually refer to important people talking about important topics. The idea of importance often differs time to time ranging from Abortions to Gun Laws. Martin Luther King, JR. is one of those important figures, as he led a variety of peaceful protests from the boycott for Rosa Parks to demonstrations in Birmingham in the fight for Civil Rights. Not to mention, he led the nonwhites in a peaceful resistance of nonviolence against unfair racial views. Out of all of his speeches, one unique one which stands out is "The Quest for Peace and Justice." It shows the concept where mankind has still not matured enough to where each person of differing race is able to live next to each other peacefully. Unless mankind can get past the walls of racial injustice, ignorance of poverty, and the true evil of war, then the battle against racial prejudice will end in the worst scenario possible. Mankind already has the ability to solve all of its obstacles by uniting together as a family connected by love and god. In fact, there are two other speeches comparable in terms of influence and emotion. The most commonly known "I Have a Dream" speech on August 28th, 1963 and "A Time to Break Silence" as King believes the people must see the war from the perspective of the Vietnamese as a peaceful approach is the best approach.
