  1) In what ways does your media product use develop or challenge forms and
     conventions of real media products

As a whole we have developed general media products as the features of our film opening have stuck
with the basics of media conventions by having our film based on a crime with is the kidnapping and
stalking of the house sitter while the doctor is gone from the house.

A challenging feature of our opening is the way that it has elements of a horror movie over a thriller
such as the creepiness of horror especially around Anna’s character Anna as in the opening you only
see her character in poor lighting as it adds an aura of creepiness that normally wouldn’t be achieved
         normally.

Series of enigmas -this convention we don’t really use that much as we have a few single enigmas
such as the reasons for the kidnapping and during the scene where the doctor leaves the baby’s
parents house people are unsure what has actually happened which creates an enigma which is
         answered later in the story

Protagonist is fallible we do have this theme but the actual protagonist In our story is a bit of a blurry
area as we don’t really have a proper protagonist as our story is mostly based around an anti-villain
(Their desired ends are good, but their means of getting there are evil).

Micro-elements build suspense some thinks that make small additions to suspense is our music
which was composed specifically to help build the tension in our plot by using one instrument at the
start and gradually adding some other instruments that nearly matches up with the film to boost
suspense. Another way that the music helps is its fluctuating volume to make it seem like there is
more of a beat to the song rather than it being as basic.

Protagonist in perils the main protagonist is the doctor, who isn’t a wholly good character. He is a
good character but his methods are questionably evil (such as kidnapping and experimentations.) he
does in up in peril in the later parts of the story as he is being chased around the house by the child
who is trying to murder him.

Narrate situations there isn’t any main narrative situations where a character explains any part of the
story but the situations arise in the story that in my opinion may need some clearing up such as the
         leaving from the kidnaping scene.

Themes of identity our thriller doesn’t use themes of identity as nobody is ever questioning their self
or the others around most of the identities are based on the opposite personalities of their actors.
Theme seeing manipulation of perspectives. During most of our thriller opening our film is made
from an onlooker perspective and it doesn’t change much through-out the opening which gives a
more general look at the opening in general rather than just using one characters view point and
    ideas.

2) How does your media product represent a particular social group?
Our target audience was 16+ teenagers as the themes that are portrayed in the story are quite
disturbing which means that younger viewer could be unsettled by our thriller but mostly it’s a
classification issue as our film would get a 15 rating so we aimed for an audience that would be able
    to see our film.
We made our protagonist (of sorts) an un-relatable character because he is the main character in
the story we don’t want people to feel sorry for him when he is in danger we want people to feel
he’s getting payback for what he’s done. At the start of the film you never actually see the doctors
face which was done deliberately also to stop people feeling bad for him, as in other films faceless
characters are difficult to make connections with so we used to fact to help detach our protagonist
    from emotions.

3) What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
Hammer Productions – film Production Company based in the UK. Founded in 1934, the company is

best known for a series of gothic "Hammer Horror" films made from the mid-1950's until the 1970's.

They also produced science fiction, thrillers, film noir and comedies - and in later years, television

    series.

During its most successful years, Hammer dominated the horror film market, enjoying worldwide

distribution and considerable financial success - was to a certain degree, due to distribution

partnerships with major US studios, such as Warner Bros. This would be an appropriate production

company for our film as it is familiarised with the thriller genre and has a highly regarded partnership

with Warner Bros. As our production company is an individual UK based one, it is neither a

conglomerate nor subsidiary institution, however it is has a highly regarded partnership with Warner

Bros. which is a massive media institution. Therefore, regarding this partnership, we think that

Warner Bros would distribute our media product because as a highly recognised institution it is likely

to be more familiarised with the audience who would view it.
4) Who would be the audience for your media product?
The majority of thrillers are targeted at 18+ viewers, as some scenes may be disturbing to
sensitive viewers. The film information usually includes warnings as to why this film is unsuitable
for younger viewers. The target audience which our film is directed towards are 16+, this is
because we feel we are able to develop in the issue in our thriller towards a more mature age
group and 16+ is what our media group comes under, and therefore we think that it would be
suitable for everyone our age and above.

5) How did we attract our audience?
We would attract our audience in many ways but some are obviously not possible. The main
way of attracting out audience that we can actually do is making posters. Alex made our
poster. When our audience looks at our poster we want to grip them and want them to
come to watch our film. We did this by showing main things from the film on the poster for
example the main character of the doctor and the main house where it is set. We have the
title of our film ‘Anna’ written across it in the little girls had writing to show that there is also
a little girl in the film. We used bold colours in our poster to make it stand out and attract
our audience’s eyes. We would put our posters up in main shop windows in towns and cities
so that lots of people would see them. Also by lots of people seeing the posters it has the
chance to increase numbers of people watching it by them telling there friends about our
film. We would also use advertising on the side of buses again so that many people would
see the advertisement as the bus travelled around busy areas. The advertisement on the
buses would look similar to the posters with the main features of our film on it. We would
also have basic information about the release date and the actors in our film. We would also
advertise on TV. We would advertise on channels such as channel 4 because this channel has
a similar audience to the ones we think will watch our film. This means that we are
advertising to the right people rather than people who watch the gardening channel for
example because they are less likely to watch a thriller film.

6) What have you learnt about technologies from process of constructing this product?

I have learnt how to use the video camera, microphone and muffler and the tripod to create an effective
scene by using smooth camera movement and rotation and clear audio. I was involved in some of the
filming of our thriller opening; I gained experience in handling these technologies. In order to put the film
together along with effects sounds and music we have had to use a programme called iMovie on the
Apple Mac. I have learnt how to operate iMovie (which is a programme to put a movie together along
with visual effects and sounds.) and how to use Garage Band which is the programme which we used to
compose our music.
7) Looking back at your preliminary task what do you feel you have learnt in the
progression from it to the full product?

Alex:From the beginning of the preliminary task to the now finished product that our group made I have learnt
to be less nervous about Acting as a whole I also started to learn the basics of using iMovie editing software
and using the very basics of garage band, in the film I was the main character in the story which you would
have seen from me being one of the main characters in our opening scene.

Hayley:In the preliminary task I was the camera operator and I was in charge of editing the film. Since our first
task I have learnt how to use a tripod, camera and muffler more effectively than in my preliminary task, in
order to achieve the quality we were aiming for. I have also learnt more about using iMovie while editing my
thriller task. I also played the part of the house sitter in our movie, therefore I have learnt to be more
confident on camera.

Sam:In the preliminary task I was a main character and was not involved in the filming. However I played a
small part in the editing. In the main task I played a minor part in the editing and created the music in garage
band. Since the preliminary task I have improved on the my use of the media language, use of equipment and
editing software.

Holly:In the preliminary task I was the main character and didn’t really have anything to do with the filming.
Since then I played a minor part in our main task and had more priority over the filming this time round. I have
learnt how to use the technical equipment now including the camera, tripod and microphone. And to edit all
of this we had to use iMovie and garage band which I have now learnt to use. By using it more

Allocated speaking parts

  • 1. Allocated speaking parts KEY HAYLEY SAM HOLLY ALEX 1) In what ways does your media product use develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products As a whole we have developed general media products as the features of our film opening have stuck with the basics of media conventions by having our film based on a crime with is the kidnapping and stalking of the house sitter while the doctor is gone from the house. A challenging feature of our opening is the way that it has elements of a horror movie over a thriller such as the creepiness of horror especially around Anna’s character Anna as in the opening you only see her character in poor lighting as it adds an aura of creepiness that normally wouldn’t be achieved normally. Series of enigmas -this convention we don’t really use that much as we have a few single enigmas such as the reasons for the kidnapping and during the scene where the doctor leaves the baby’s parents house people are unsure what has actually happened which creates an enigma which is answered later in the story Protagonist is fallible we do have this theme but the actual protagonist In our story is a bit of a blurry area as we don’t really have a proper protagonist as our story is mostly based around an anti-villain (Their desired ends are good, but their means of getting there are evil). Micro-elements build suspense some thinks that make small additions to suspense is our music which was composed specifically to help build the tension in our plot by using one instrument at the start and gradually adding some other instruments that nearly matches up with the film to boost suspense. Another way that the music helps is its fluctuating volume to make it seem like there is more of a beat to the song rather than it being as basic. Protagonist in perils the main protagonist is the doctor, who isn’t a wholly good character. He is a good character but his methods are questionably evil (such as kidnapping and experimentations.) he does in up in peril in the later parts of the story as he is being chased around the house by the child who is trying to murder him. Narrate situations there isn’t any main narrative situations where a character explains any part of the story but the situations arise in the story that in my opinion may need some clearing up such as the leaving from the kidnaping scene. Themes of identity our thriller doesn’t use themes of identity as nobody is ever questioning their self or the others around most of the identities are based on the opposite personalities of their actors.
  • 2. Theme seeing manipulation of perspectives. During most of our thriller opening our film is made from an onlooker perspective and it doesn’t change much through-out the opening which gives a more general look at the opening in general rather than just using one characters view point and ideas. 2) How does your media product represent a particular social group? Our target audience was 16+ teenagers as the themes that are portrayed in the story are quite disturbing which means that younger viewer could be unsettled by our thriller but mostly it’s a classification issue as our film would get a 15 rating so we aimed for an audience that would be able to see our film. We made our protagonist (of sorts) an un-relatable character because he is the main character in the story we don’t want people to feel sorry for him when he is in danger we want people to feel he’s getting payback for what he’s done. At the start of the film you never actually see the doctors face which was done deliberately also to stop people feeling bad for him, as in other films faceless characters are difficult to make connections with so we used to fact to help detach our protagonist from emotions. 3) What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why? Hammer Productions – film Production Company based in the UK. Founded in 1934, the company is best known for a series of gothic "Hammer Horror" films made from the mid-1950's until the 1970's. They also produced science fiction, thrillers, film noir and comedies - and in later years, television series. During its most successful years, Hammer dominated the horror film market, enjoying worldwide distribution and considerable financial success - was to a certain degree, due to distribution partnerships with major US studios, such as Warner Bros. This would be an appropriate production company for our film as it is familiarised with the thriller genre and has a highly regarded partnership with Warner Bros. As our production company is an individual UK based one, it is neither a conglomerate nor subsidiary institution, however it is has a highly regarded partnership with Warner Bros. which is a massive media institution. Therefore, regarding this partnership, we think that Warner Bros would distribute our media product because as a highly recognised institution it is likely to be more familiarised with the audience who would view it.
  • 3. 4) Who would be the audience for your media product? The majority of thrillers are targeted at 18+ viewers, as some scenes may be disturbing to sensitive viewers. The film information usually includes warnings as to why this film is unsuitable for younger viewers. The target audience which our film is directed towards are 16+, this is because we feel we are able to develop in the issue in our thriller towards a more mature age group and 16+ is what our media group comes under, and therefore we think that it would be suitable for everyone our age and above. 5) How did we attract our audience? We would attract our audience in many ways but some are obviously not possible. The main way of attracting out audience that we can actually do is making posters. Alex made our poster. When our audience looks at our poster we want to grip them and want them to come to watch our film. We did this by showing main things from the film on the poster for example the main character of the doctor and the main house where it is set. We have the title of our film ‘Anna’ written across it in the little girls had writing to show that there is also a little girl in the film. We used bold colours in our poster to make it stand out and attract our audience’s eyes. We would put our posters up in main shop windows in towns and cities so that lots of people would see them. Also by lots of people seeing the posters it has the chance to increase numbers of people watching it by them telling there friends about our film. We would also use advertising on the side of buses again so that many people would see the advertisement as the bus travelled around busy areas. The advertisement on the buses would look similar to the posters with the main features of our film on it. We would also have basic information about the release date and the actors in our film. We would also advertise on TV. We would advertise on channels such as channel 4 because this channel has a similar audience to the ones we think will watch our film. This means that we are advertising to the right people rather than people who watch the gardening channel for example because they are less likely to watch a thriller film. 6) What have you learnt about technologies from process of constructing this product? I have learnt how to use the video camera, microphone and muffler and the tripod to create an effective scene by using smooth camera movement and rotation and clear audio. I was involved in some of the filming of our thriller opening; I gained experience in handling these technologies. In order to put the film together along with effects sounds and music we have had to use a programme called iMovie on the Apple Mac. I have learnt how to operate iMovie (which is a programme to put a movie together along with visual effects and sounds.) and how to use Garage Band which is the programme which we used to compose our music.
  • 4. 7) Looking back at your preliminary task what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product? Alex:From the beginning of the preliminary task to the now finished product that our group made I have learnt to be less nervous about Acting as a whole I also started to learn the basics of using iMovie editing software and using the very basics of garage band, in the film I was the main character in the story which you would have seen from me being one of the main characters in our opening scene. Hayley:In the preliminary task I was the camera operator and I was in charge of editing the film. Since our first task I have learnt how to use a tripod, camera and muffler more effectively than in my preliminary task, in order to achieve the quality we were aiming for. I have also learnt more about using iMovie while editing my thriller task. I also played the part of the house sitter in our movie, therefore I have learnt to be more confident on camera. Sam:In the preliminary task I was a main character and was not involved in the filming. However I played a small part in the editing. In the main task I played a minor part in the editing and created the music in garage band. Since the preliminary task I have improved on the my use of the media language, use of equipment and editing software. Holly:In the preliminary task I was the main character and didn’t really have anything to do with the filming. Since then I played a minor part in our main task and had more priority over the filming this time round. I have learnt how to use the technical equipment now including the camera, tripod and microphone. And to edit all of this we had to use iMovie and garage band which I have now learnt to use. By using it more
