How can I receive a tv signal?
-Terrestrial television. A television station is a type of broadcast station that
broadcasts both audio and video to television receivers in a particular area. It
sends radio signals over the air.
- Cable television is a system of distributing television programs via radio
frequency (RF) signals transmitted through coaxial cables.
- Satellite television is television programming delivered by the means of
communications satellite and received by an outdoor antenna.

Networks and Channels
A TELEVISION NETWORK is a company which uses a
telecommunications network for distribution of television
programs, using public stations or affiliated stations. A
network can own one or more channels, or studios.
A TELEVISION CHANNEL is a channel over which a
television station or television network is distributed (a
numeric identifier or a band or radio frequency).
USA TV
• Pay attention : The cable channels aren´t “networks”
because don´t use a stations’ net for the emission.
• A network affiliate (or affiliated station) is a local
broadcaster which carries some or all of the television
program of a television network, but is owned by a
company different than the owner of the network.
• In fact, television network, television station and
television channel have become mostly interchangeable
in everyday language.
The channels: Networks vs Cable
At United States we can difference between freeview television (the
networks) and paid Services as the cable television channels.
USA TV
Networks
- The profit of the networks
comes from television ads.
-The networks are usually
distributed via affiliates or public
stations.
-The networks only broadcast
their programs part of the day.
Cable channels
-It´s a paid service by subcripcion.
-Its distributed via cable or direct-
broadcast satellite companies.
-´The cable provide a full national
schedule and do not need to act
through local stations.
For example, The CW Television Network only broadcasts 10 hours
each week, leaving its affiliates free to broadcast a large amount of
syndicated programming (reposiciones) or their local programming.
Seeing as the networks have commercial channels and public
cannel , will see the differences:
♣ Main commercial networks:
Television in the USA has long been dominated by the Big Three television
networks, ABC, CBS and NBC. Fox, launched in 1986, has gained
prominence and is now considered as part of the "Big Four." The fifth in
importance is The CW.
Other networks are dedicated to specialist programmes, such as religious
broadcasting or services in languages other than English, especially in
Spanish.

♣ Public Broadcasting Service (PBS)
The largest television network in the United States, is the Public Broadcasting
Service (PBS), a non-profit, non-commercial educational, publicly owned
service.
In comparison to the commercial television networks, there is no central
unified arm of broadcast programming, meaning that each PBS affiliate has a
big amount of freedom to schedule television shows as they want to.
The cable
This term refers to subscription-based television services.
• Pay television: some providers offer channels owned by the
same company in a single package.
• Premium services: they are almost always subscribed to a la
carte cable television. For example, one can subscribe to HBO
without subscribing to Showtime. They are not included in
packs.
• Pay-per-view (PPV) services: they are when you pay for a single
program. Programs offered via pay-per-view are most often
movies or sporting events.

TIME ZONES
The United States uses nine standard time zones. From east to west
they are:
• Atlantic Standard Time (AST).
• Eastern Standard Time (EST).
• Central Standard Time (CST)
• Mountain Standard Time (MST)
• Pacific Standard Time (PST)
• Alaskan Standard Time (AKST).
• Hawaii-Aleutian Standard Time (HST)
• Samoa standard time (UTC-11)
• Chamorro Standard Time (UTC+10).
USA TV
U.S. national networks and cable channels generally air at least
two separate feeds to their stations and affiliates: the "east feed"
that is aired simultaneously in the Eastern and Central Time
Zones, and the "west feed" that is tape-delayed three hours for
those in the Pacific Time Zone.
This ensures that a program, for example, that airs at 8 p.m. on
the east coast is also shown locally at 8 p.m. on the Pacific.
Many national live events though are broadcast simultaneously
nationwide.

Full Season and Christmas Break
The traditional television season (full season or fall
season) typically runs from September through May
for at least 22 episodes. But from September to
May there are 34 weeks, so, it´s necessary to take
some breaks.
The most famous it´s the Christmas Break during
December and January.
USA TV
Mid-season and Summer Season
The mid-season replacement is a series that premieres in
the second half of the season, usually between January
and May. Midseason replacements usually take place
after a show that was in the fall schedule is canceled or
put on hiatus. They usually have 10-13 episodes.
Other tv series are broadcasted during summer, from
June to September. They also have 10-13 episodes.
