9. Planning
Decide on a topic
Brainstorm ideas
Determine 3 to 4 main points that support the topic.
Include 2 or 3 things to say about each of the main
points. Include detailed explanations about the
point or ask yourself: who, what, when, where,
how, or why your main point is important.
Stay organized! You will want to refer back to your
planning when writing your paper.
11. Introduction
Your first sentence should grab the
attention of the reader
Begin instructing the reader what
they will be reading about
Your last sentence should be your
thesis statement. It is a onesentence, summary or conclusion of
what the paper will be about.
12. Body Paragraphs
Each Body Paragraph lists or describes one
point that supports the thesis statement and
should be at least 3-4 sentences long
Body paragraphs should start by
introducing a point
Next, specifically state the point you wish
to make.
Then support your point with further
explanation. A good supportive body
paragraph answers who, what, when,
where, how, or why?
13. Conclusion
The conclusion should start
with a restating of the thesis
statement.
Next, review your supporting
thesis statement ideas. These
should be 1-2 sentences each
and derive from the body
paragraphs.
End with a broad, general
statement of why the paper is
relative and important.

Why do we write? How many people like to talk? Writing is a form of communication. Writing organizes and collects the thoughts and ideas of one person and displays it for others to read and enjoy. Writing can permanently display information and allow others to join in discussing its’ content.Image Writing Laying Down. http://www.livebinders.com/play/play?id=674997. Accessed 11/20/2013.
Once you have decided which type of writing style best suits your writing needs, it is important to place yourself in an appropriate environment. Usually, optimum writing environments are quiet and free of distractions. They are well lit to discourage fatigue. They usually have a comfortable chair that allows one to sit in one place for long periods of time without getting sore or uncomfortable. Skilled writers also utilize a large workspace like a desk, and keep organized and clear of clutter.Image Do Not Disturb. http://writingcareercoach.com. Accessed 11/20/2013
To better prepare students for academic writing, we will focus on expository, descriptive, and persuasive writing. The most important part of the writing process is planning and brainstorming. The ideas developed in the planning process will become the main points of your paper. The planning method can take on the shape of a concept map, a list, or a Venn diagram, if comparing and contrasting two or more ideas.Image Copyright Mystic Arts LLC. http://chronicle.com/blogs/linguafranca/files/2012/10/Writing-writing-31277215-579-612.jpg. This is the basic format of a paper. It begins with the introductory paragraph, moves into the body paragraphs and then reverts back to a conclusion.
The first sentence of your paper should be a broad, general statement that captures the attention of the reader and leads the paper to its’ topic. After your introduction, you should begin telling about some of the main points you have brainstormed and will be discussing in the paper. Finally, include a thesis statement. The thesis statement is the most important sentence in the entire paper because it is the summary of all the points of the paper. You should be able to read only the thesis statement and know exactly what the paper will be discussing and what the author’s stance is on the subject.Image Funnel. http://adriandayton.com/2009/10/seo-guys-my-clicks-are-better-than-your-clicks. A well though out thesis statement should have at least three or four supporting statements. These statements will become the topic of each body paragraph, one supporting statement per body paragraph. Like the Introduction to the paper, each body paragraph has an introduction to the point for which the paragraph will be stating. These Introductions are more specific and focused on the point of the paragraph, unlike the broad, general statement of the Introductory paragraph. After you introduce your point, specifically state your idea that supports thesis statement. After you have stated the point, describe how or why it is a valid supporting point.Image Cheese. http://www.foodsubs.com/Chesfirm.html.
