This document discusses collaborative writing and Common Core standards in the classroom. It introduces several educators who are involved with the Flat Classroom project and discusses how collaborative writing groups can help students meet writing standards. Specific standards around argument, informative/explanatory, and narrative writing are covered. Case studies are presented on projects like NaNoWriMo that use collaborative writing approaches.

In our classroom, we call it “show what you know”. We read, we research, we write and students are asked to “show what they know” in various media formats
Important that we begin by acclimating students to CCSS and the targets. I’m a firm believer in helping students understand the WHY of what they are doing.
No. Absolutely not. When students write collaboratively, based on their own choice and inquiry, for an authentic audience, learning becomes, deeper, robust with many pieces of unintended curriculum.
We need to support each other, share with each other and get out of isolation nation. This is about moving from “ME” to “WE”

NaNoWriMo stands for National Novel Writing Month. People write a novel in a month. You know people who have done it on their own or with their class, We did it with the whole 9th grade. Most students wrote alone, a few in partnerships. All shared their work with a teacher, a primary partner and a writing group. Photos http://t0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcRr_ce2A9N_BHUxXuN7NlRxry9J5nIqydMpeeI2HPXEJ_nE2YAD http://t1.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSmlB2mAIoQdi-hHWSw6EyUER2hme8IDbYfYHbsSiDRqWEWRA5jXA http://distilleryimage9.s3.amazonaws.com/7630ba70affa11e1a9f71231382044a1_7.jpg
Every 9th grader knew that every other 9th grader was writing a novel and their teachers were writing too. Lunch conversations became writing support groups, "I'm just not sure what to do next with my protagonist. I'm thinking of bringing in another subplot to keep the action moving, but I need more dialog because I think my character is not talking enough to the supporting characters." The other students would nod sympathetically and suggest, "Have you considered a flashback to add some exposition to your plot?"
We kept up with other classes at our site in a friendly rivalry to meet word count goals. (pic) And through the YWP website they knew that thousands of other classes were writing also. Next year I plan to reach out and “friend” more classes from around the world. And yes we are doing it AGAIN.

These next few slides can likely be hidden iF we live demo from the last screen (Suzie) Ever need a lesson plan or resource, fast? Searching within a group like this, with a standard tagging dictionary can be much quicker than starting a general web search. Let’s join this group…
Before we can look at the heart of classroom examples of this, we need to understand tagging. One of the most crucial aspects of learning, using and teaching with Diigo is to understanding and effectively using tags. A tag is a subject or category of how we classify things on the internet. In our classroom, we often call it “Don’t forget to tag your folks”. This is a step most people usually want to skip over without thinking about the long term benefits. Taxonomy – makes your life easier as a teacher – assignment tags, makes grading quickest when searching for multiple online products Folksonomy – Categorical – makes search within database easier by topic.
Example from 21C Global Studies Class Blog http://21cglobal.blogspot.com/2011/10/flat-world-and-our-place-in-it.html and http://21cglobal.blogspot.com/2011/10/diigo-it.html
Remember those taxonomy tags? By searching school tag “mcahs” Now, you can also search for grade level, assignment tags, etc.
Principles of Democracy Class Groups – created by students researching same topics for the creation of like political Interest Groups. In this case, students created their groups and requested to join each others. In the Diigo Teacher Console, groups may be created by the teacher and students can be imported to the group via .csv upload (Do I need a slide showing this?) Research is conducted through Diigo and the research results in collaboratively built wikipages such as…
Ultimately, the research becomes social as student groups are not assigned… they are formulated around like topics and tags – which is the key to making this all work correctly.
