UNIT - V
Introduction
 Network design consists of
 Description of (technology and topology)
 Product details(product type, name
 Device configurations (h/w & s/w )
 Service selections(QoS, voIP - Voice over
Internet Protocol)
 Vendor(supplier / seller / manufacture),
 Location Information and
 General structure (switches/routers)
 Network functions( security, nw mngnt)
 General locations (building, rooms, floors)
Analogy to a building design
 In designing a building
 The designer / architect needs to know
the general purpose for that building
 Ex: what types of occupants such as
○ Residential
○ Commercial
○ Industrial

Analogy to a building design
 The building design would include the
building’s physical layout
 How space will be used,
 How occupants will move around within the
building,
 Their needs for building resources such as
○ HVAC, lighting, power, water, plumbing,
elevators, stairs, restrooms, fire safety,
exits(emergency exit), etc..
Analogy to a building design
 The product of the building design is a
set of blueprints.
 That provide a physical layout for all of
this information, and
 Show the relationships among
components of the building such as
 Trade-offs (space, power & other resources)
Design products
 The key products of a network design
are:
 Network blueprints
 A component plan
 Vendor
 Vendor equipment
 Service provider selection
 Metrics for measuring design success.
 Network blueprints : physical aspects of your
network design.
 Network blue prints consists of
 Single diagram
 Several diagrams of the network. Its vary
depend on your needs and the size of your
project.
 Locations of network devices
 Servers
 The cable plant.
 Physical security and secure locations
 How devices are interconnected.
 Interface types and speeds.
 If the network design is large, it has one
or more high level diagrams that show
the entire network.
 ex:
 LAN diagram (geographical areas)
WAN diagram (geographical areas)
 A component plan which describes the
mechanisms associated with that
function.
 Internal interactions
 External interactions
Input to the design
Input to the design
 These analysis and architecture
processes provide products that serve
input to our design.
 Fig. shows the architecture products
feed into the two parts of the design
process evaluations
 Design products.
 Design process.
 layout producing a number of design
products.
Design process
 The design process consists of
 Vendor
 Equipment
 Service provider
 Network layout
 Types of products:
○ Architecture products
○ Analysis products
Architecture produ
 Selection topology
 Selection technology
 Equipment types / classes
 Supporting material(traceability diagram)
 Architectural relationships
 Routing and switching / addressing
 Security & performance.
 Network management
Analysis products
 Requirements
 Flow information
 Problem statements
 Service information
 Network layout :
 logical diagram ,physical blueprints and
function component plans.
 Show the parts of your network design.

Input to the design  These analysis and architecture processes provide products that serve input to our design.  Fig. shows the architecture products feed into the two parts of the design process evaluations  Design products.  Design process.  layout producing a number of design products.
  • 13. Design process  The design process consists of  Vendor  Equipment  Service provider  Network layout  Types of products: ○ Architecture products ○ Analysis products
  • 14. Architecture produ  Selection topology  Selection technology  Equipment types / classes  Supporting material(traceability diagram)  Architectural relationships  Routing and switching / addressing  Security & performance.  Network management
  • 15. Analysis products  Requirements  Flow information  Problem statements  Service information  Network layout :  logical diagram ,physical blueprints and function component plans.  Show the parts of your network design.
