TechLeaders Association | 2018Q1 | Resumes and Handbills Are Dead: Use Scenarios to Network Into Jobs 2
Agenda: Perspective
• 30 years experience as management
consultant and line executive
• Advised B2Bs on strategy and
execution for game-changers: Java, e-business,
SOA, Web 3.0, social business
• Founded CSRA in 2006 to advise nonprofit, for-
profit and government firms on social business
TechLeaders Association | 2018Q1 | Resumes and Handbills Are Dead: Use Scenarios to Network Into Jobs
Agenda: Skills, Experience, Network
• The “job-based” careers outdated—not coming
back
– A “job” is a slot created by organization to meet persistent need
– “Jobs” are bundles
• Mission, goals, within a defined context
• Needs, skills, requirements
• Economic exchange (pay, performance)
– The market moves too fast, and organizations can’t keep up
• This creates pent-up demand that you can tap
• Jobs are the organization's hope that problems
will be solved
– It's hard work—and slow—to create jobs
– What problem do you want to solve? Bring solutions to prospects
3
Organization sluggishness is your competitive advantage

TechLeaders Association | 2018Q1 | Resumes and Handbills Are Dead: Use Scenarios to Network Into Jobs
Agenda: Insights from Ethnographic Research
• Rare insight: 11 years experience with
qualitative and quantitative insight into
behavior
• People make decisions emotionally,
with their gut
• Actions are the body language of a
person’s will
• Pitching turns people off
• Everyone is trying to accomplish what’s
important to him/her

TechLeaders Association | 2018Q1 | Resumes and Handbills Are Dead: Use Scenarios to Network Into Jobs
Agenda: Most Jobs Don't Exist
5
70% of
management
jobs are created
TechLeaders Association | 2018Q1 | Resumes and Handbills Are Dead: Use Scenarios to Network Into Jobs
Career Mission: Free Yourself from "Work"
• A mission is higher than work
– "Work" becomes just another way
you pursue your mission
– There's no "trade-off" because the
focus is cause and impact
– Work arrangements are packaging
• This is liberating
– Your work is more meaningful
– You inspire other people
– Social platforms spread your message
• I help companies relate to people who drive their
businesses
6
What do you care about?
!
TechLeaders Association | 2018Q1 | Resumes and Handbills Are Dead: Use Scenarios to Network Into Jobs
Career Mission: Revisiting the Trade-off
• Employers' typical fears
– "You have no 'direction'"
– "Will you stay? (until I want you to go)"
• Clients' reservations
– "This is only 'second best'"
– "Will you ditch me for a job?"
• When you are committed to your mission,
prospects want to be part of it
– You care—they feel your commitment—so prospects trust you
– Social platforms play a key role in telling the world
7
Commitment
Your mission shows direction & commitment at a gut level

Social Channel: Specialist v. Generalist
• "Fitting in" used to make sense (20th c)
• Mission & specialty go together (21st c)
– Specialty is more commitment
– In a pervasive network, specialists shine
– Your specialty serves your mission
• The social network effect
– Interacting with people who care about your mission builds your
reputation
– Specialists are more noticeable on the Social Channel
10
A specialist can be flexible & adaptable, but always committed
Generalists
are invisible

TechLeaders Association | 2018Q1 | Resumes and Handbills Are Dead: Use Scenarios to Network Into Jobs
Social Channel: How Scenarios Engage
1.Business context: are you more valuable in emerging
situations or mature markets? After mergers? Clawing
market share from established competitors? New
product launches? Picking up after failure?
2.Mission: what you want to do and why. What does it
mean to you, personally.. professionally?
3.Impact on people (users/customers/employees), and
how are these important to firms?: Look on LinkedIn
for those keywords and see how many others have
them in similar combinations or contexts
4.Roles: the scope of what you want to do, including
results you want to produce, why you will be important
to the org or market
11
!
TechLeaders Association | 2018Q1 | Resumes and Handbills Are Dead: Use Scenarios to Network Into Jobs
Social Channel: Example Scenario
1.Social impact/cause and nonprofits have had their
budgets slashed as traditional funding sources dry up
—this is tragic because more and more people aren’t
served by “the system.”
2.My passion is helping nonprofits to connect with
donors, volunteers, member/customer and other
stakeholders. I love sharing breakthrough innovation
with orgs with causes I care about.
3.The crux of experiential social media is being real and
community-based in digital public, so we inspire people.
I put this to service for nonprofits that empower women
and improve health in underprivileged communities,
sustainable development; it’s so inspiring!
4.I lead experiential projects as a consultant, interim
leader or employee. Experiential practices are best
taught with mentoring, so I empower people while we
work, side by side. And I show them how to mentor, too

TechLeaders Association | 2018Q1 | Resumes and Handbills Are Dead: Use Scenarios to Network Into Jobs
Social Channel: Scenarios Help You Break
Through
• They confront you with what you really want, on
several levels
• They help people remember you much more
easily because they hear you in “quad stereo”
• They help people refer you
• You’ll get higher value consulting contracts and
better jobs because people will feel your passion
– You will feel it, too, so you’ll have more energy
• You’ll be seen as more dynamic because you’ll
have thought through your mission on multiple
levels
13
Break
through
TechLeaders Association | 2018Q1 | Resumes and Handbills Are Dead: Use Scenarios to Network Into Jobs
Social Channel: Mission Exercises
• All: You need to create a psychic space (white space)
– No devices, no commitments, no interruptions, 3-4 hours minimum
– Embrace emptiness (white space is, well, white ;^), allow your mind to
wander for an hour, then try one of these; be patient with yourself.
• A: Imagine that your doctor told you you have a
year to live
– What would you like to do before you leave?
• B: You are walking in the woods and find a wand
– It enables you to do any one thing you want. What would you choose?
• All: Use a multi-step process
– List all things that come to mind at the first setting. Do not edit.
– In a separate setting, consider them. Choose five.
– In a third setting, choose one.
– It is important to let time pass between settings, so each step “sinks in.”
– For an exceptional book on mission processes and more, see links.

TechLeaders Association | 2018Q1 | Resumes and Handbills Are Dead: Use Scenarios to Network Into Jobs
Toolbox: Use LinkedIn to Interact
• LinkedIn Publishing
– Comment on posts, and LI’s algo will notify your network
• Groups
– Start and hold discussions in relevant Groups
• Use the option to invite people in your network to respond
• Monitor your question daily, thank people for responding, ask them
follow-on questions based on their responses
• Do this regularly: once a month or once a week
– Use search in Groups to find links and discussions in which to engage
• Imagine you are talking to an employer or consulting prospect
• Twitter
– Install LI’s Twitter app: select tweets will broadcast to your LI network
16
1
Draw attention by interacting around your mission
TechLeaders Association | 2018Q1 | Resumes and Handbills Are Dead: Use Scenarios to Network Into Jobs
Toolbox: Use Scenarios at Networking Events
• Use one part of your scenario when
meeting people
– Based on their reaction, be ready to engage with another part
– Follow your instinct by sizing someone up (energy, appearance)
– I often lead with the context or mission
– Role only emerges when they’ve asked questions
• Have fun
• I often observe pairs or trios and enter those that
feel right
– You get double or triple exposure; when one person is interested, the
others often become interested
– Don’t enter those in deep discussion
17
2
Lead with emotion, and your connection rate will grow
TechLeaders Association | 2018Q1 | Resumes and Handbills Are Dead: Use Scenarios to Network Into Jobs 18
Toolbox: Blogging (Yes, You Can)
• Step One: Create your vision
– If you don’t have a blog, see our guide to get going for free
– Focus on your mission and scenarios! Share & comment on situations,
case studies, challenges & what you would do
– One post/period about what you’re already doing
• Step Two: Who else is writing about this?
– People you admire: use the blogroll to comment on their posts
– Once/period
• Step Three: Expand outside
– Keyword searches: who’s doing interesting things
– Bring into your blog by commenting
Make part of your existing work public: not new work
3
TechLeaders Association | 2018Q1 | Resumes and Handbills Are Dead: Use Scenarios to Network Into Jobs 19
Toolbox: Twitter
• Create a small, focused following
– Search Twitter in 2/3 keyword combinations relevant to scenarios
– Follow people who tweet about those topics
– Join LinkedIn’s Twitter group; find people to follow in Twitter
– Complete the Twitter profile; include your LinkedIn URL
• Share relevant news articles
– Most MSM has Twitter, Facebook & Google+ sharing buttons
– Copy any URL and paste into Twitter; it will shrink for you
• Used Advanced Search to enter conversations
– People are talking about your scenario(s) right now
– You can share your thoughts and make connections
– You can create a Twitter Moment to access your interactions at a click
4
Create your professional news network
TechLeaders Association | 2018Q1 | Resumes and Handbills Are Dead: Use Scenarios to Network Into Jobs
• Find people talking about your scenario(s)
• Help them by asking further questions & offering
ideas
• Bookmark the interaction: you can build a portfolio
of the best
– Example => http://pinboard.in/u:csrollyson/t:csrblogcomment
• Copy parts of the text and do a short blog post
– Even better, do a Google+ post
• Focus on high quality venues & conversations
– Blogs
– Forums
– Mainstream media (MSM)

Network into Jobs with Scenarios

  • 1. Experiential Social Media and Social Business Christopher S. Rollyson and Associates Plan | Learn | Scale | Integrate | Manage Resumes and Handbills Are Dead: Use Scenarios to Network Into Jobs Plus: Avoiding the Job vs. Consulting Trade-off Entire contents © 2008-2018 by Christopher S. Rollyson
  • 2. TechLeaders Association | 2018Q1 | Resumes and Handbills Are Dead: Use Scenarios to Network Into Jobs 2 Agenda: Perspective • 30 years experience as management consultant and line executive • Advised B2Bs on strategy and execution for game-changers: Java, e-business, SOA, Web 3.0, social business • Founded CSRA in 2006 to advise nonprofit, for- profit and government firms on social business
  • 3. TechLeaders Association | 2018Q1 | Resumes and Handbills Are Dead: Use Scenarios to Network Into Jobs Agenda: Skills, Experience, Network • The “job-based” careers outdated—not coming back – A “job” is a slot created by organization to meet persistent need – “Jobs” are bundles • Mission, goals, within a defined context • Needs, skills, requirements • Economic exchange (pay, performance) – The market moves too fast, and organizations can’t keep up • This creates pent-up demand that you can tap • Jobs are the organization's hope that problems will be solved – It's hard work—and slow—to create jobs – What problem do you want to solve? Bring solutions to prospects 3 Organization sluggishness is your competitive advantage box !
  • 4. TechLeaders Association | 2018Q1 | Resumes and Handbills Are Dead: Use Scenarios to Network Into Jobs Agenda: Insights from Ethnographic Research • Rare insight: 11 years experience with qualitative and quantitative insight into behavior • People make decisions emotionally, with their gut • Actions are the body language of a person’s will • Pitching turns people off • Everyone is trying to accomplish what’s important to him/her 4 !
  • 5. TechLeaders Association | 2018Q1 | Resumes and Handbills Are Dead: Use Scenarios to Network Into Jobs Agenda: Most Jobs Don't Exist 5 70% of management jobs are created
  • 6. TechLeaders Association | 2018Q1 | Resumes and Handbills Are Dead: Use Scenarios to Network Into Jobs Career Mission: Free Yourself from "Work" • A mission is higher than work – "Work" becomes just another way you pursue your mission – There's no "trade-off" because the focus is cause and impact – Work arrangements are packaging • This is liberating – Your work is more meaningful – You inspire other people – Social platforms spread your message • I help companies relate to people who drive their businesses 6 What do you care about? !
  • 7. TechLeaders Association | 2018Q1 | Resumes and Handbills Are Dead: Use Scenarios to Network Into Jobs Career Mission: Revisiting the Trade-off • Employers' typical fears – "You have no 'direction'" – "Will you stay? (until I want you to go)" • Clients' reservations – "This is only 'second best'" – "Will you ditch me for a job?" • When you are committed to your mission, prospects want to be part of it – You care—they feel your commitment—so prospects trust you – Social platforms play a key role in telling the world 7 Commitment Your mission shows direction & commitment at a gut level
  • 8. The Knowledge Economy is personal TechLeaders Association | 2018Q1 | Resumes and Handbills Are Dead: Use Scenarios to Network Into Jobs Career Mission: Your Calling Card 8 Impersonal Personal
  • 9. TechLeaders Association | 2018Q1 | Resumes and Handbills Are Dead: Use Scenarios to Network Into Jobs Social Channel: Resumes/Jobs are out, Mission, Scenarios & Social are in 9 20th Century 21st Century Structure Job Job, consulting, interim... Who Human Resources, Career Services Your network Tools Resumes, cover letters Mission, scenarios, social networks Focus Department, within silo Company, business drivers Organization Model Structured, inflexible Emergent, agile Imagine you were the first salesperson to use the telephone
  • 10. TechLeaders Association | 2018Q1 | Resumes and Handbills Are Dead: Use Scenarios to Network Into Jobs Social Channel: Specialist v. Generalist • "Fitting in" used to make sense (20th c) • Mission & specialty go together (21st c) – Specialty is more commitment – In a pervasive network, specialists shine – Your specialty serves your mission • The social network effect – Interacting with people who care about your mission builds your reputation – Specialists are more noticeable on the Social Channel 10 A specialist can be flexible & adaptable, but always committed Generalists are invisible online
  • 11. TechLeaders Association | 2018Q1 | Resumes and Handbills Are Dead: Use Scenarios to Network Into Jobs Social Channel: How Scenarios Engage 1.Business context: are you more valuable in emerging situations or mature markets? After mergers? Clawing market share from established competitors? New product launches? Picking up after failure? 2.Mission: what you want to do and why. What does it mean to you, personally.. professionally? 3.Impact on people (users/customers/employees), and how are these important to firms?: Look on LinkedIn for those keywords and see how many others have them in similar combinations or contexts 4.Roles: the scope of what you want to do, including results you want to produce, why you will be important to the org or market 11 !
  • 12. TechLeaders Association | 2018Q1 | Resumes and Handbills Are Dead: Use Scenarios to Network Into Jobs Social Channel: Example Scenario 1.Social impact/cause and nonprofits have had their budgets slashed as traditional funding sources dry up —this is tragic because more and more people aren’t served by “the system.” 2.My passion is helping nonprofits to connect with donors, volunteers, member/customer and other stakeholders. I love sharing breakthrough innovation with orgs with causes I care about. 3.The crux of experiential social media is being real and community-based in digital public, so we inspire people. I put this to service for nonprofits that empower women and improve health in underprivileged communities, sustainable development; it’s so inspiring! 4.I lead experiential projects as a consultant, interim leader or employee. Experiential practices are best taught with mentoring, so I empower people while we work, side by side. And I show them how to mentor, too 12 !
  • 13. TechLeaders Association | 2018Q1 | Resumes and Handbills Are Dead: Use Scenarios to Network Into Jobs Social Channel: Scenarios Help You Break Through • They confront you with what you really want, on several levels • They help people remember you much more easily because they hear you in “quad stereo” • They help people refer you • You’ll get higher value consulting contracts and better jobs because people will feel your passion – You will feel it, too, so you’ll have more energy • You’ll be seen as more dynamic because you’ll have thought through your mission on multiple levels 13 Break through
  • 14. TechLeaders Association | 2018Q1 | Resumes and Handbills Are Dead: Use Scenarios to Network Into Jobs Social Channel: Mission Exercises • All: You need to create a psychic space (white space) – No devices, no commitments, no interruptions, 3-4 hours minimum – Embrace emptiness (white space is, well, white ;^), allow your mind to wander for an hour, then try one of these; be patient with yourself. • A: Imagine that your doctor told you you have a year to live – What would you like to do before you leave? • B: You are walking in the woods and find a wand – It enables you to do any one thing you want. What would you choose? • All: Use a multi-step process – List all things that come to mind at the first setting. Do not edit. – In a separate setting, consider them. Choose five. – In a third setting, choose one. – It is important to let time pass between settings, so each step “sinks in.” – For an exceptional book on mission processes and more, see links. 14 Your mission
  • 15. Interact online around your mission TechLeaders Association | 2018Q1 | Resumes and Handbills Are Dead: Use Scenarios to Network Into Jobs Social Channel: Show You Care 15
  • 16. TechLeaders Association | 2018Q1 | Resumes and Handbills Are Dead: Use Scenarios to Network Into Jobs Toolbox: Use LinkedIn to Interact • LinkedIn Publishing – Comment on posts, and LI’s algo will notify your network • Groups – Start and hold discussions in relevant Groups • Use the option to invite people in your network to respond • Monitor your question daily, thank people for responding, ask them follow-on questions based on their responses • Do this regularly: once a month or once a week – Use search in Groups to find links and discussions in which to engage • Imagine you are talking to an employer or consulting prospect • Twitter – Install LI’s Twitter app: select tweets will broadcast to your LI network 16 1 Draw attention by interacting around your mission
  • 17. TechLeaders Association | 2018Q1 | Resumes and Handbills Are Dead: Use Scenarios to Network Into Jobs Toolbox: Use Scenarios at Networking Events • Use one part of your scenario when meeting people – Based on their reaction, be ready to engage with another part – Follow your instinct by sizing someone up (energy, appearance) – I often lead with the context or mission – Role only emerges when they’ve asked questions • Have fun • I often observe pairs or trios and enter those that feel right – You get double or triple exposure; when one person is interested, the others often become interested – Don’t enter those in deep discussion 17 2 Lead with emotion, and your connection rate will grow
  • 18. TechLeaders Association | 2018Q1 | Resumes and Handbills Are Dead: Use Scenarios to Network Into Jobs 18 Toolbox: Blogging (Yes, You Can) • Step One: Create your vision – If you don’t have a blog, see our guide to get going for free – Focus on your mission and scenarios! Share & comment on situations, case studies, challenges & what you would do – One post/period about what you’re already doing • Step Two: Who else is writing about this? – People you admire: use the blogroll to comment on their posts – Once/period • Step Three: Expand outside – Keyword searches: who’s doing interesting things – Bring into your blog by commenting Make part of your existing work public: not new work 3
  • 19. TechLeaders Association | 2018Q1 | Resumes and Handbills Are Dead: Use Scenarios to Network Into Jobs 19 Toolbox: Twitter • Create a small, focused following – Search Twitter in 2/3 keyword combinations relevant to scenarios – Follow people who tweet about those topics – Join LinkedIn’s Twitter group; find people to follow in Twitter – Complete the Twitter profile; include your LinkedIn URL • Share relevant news articles – Most MSM has Twitter, Facebook & Google+ sharing buttons – Copy any URL and paste into Twitter; it will shrink for you • Used Advanced Search to enter conversations – People are talking about your scenario(s) right now – You can share your thoughts and make connections – You can create a Twitter Moment to access your interactions at a click 4 Create your professional news network
  • 20. TechLeaders Association | 2018Q1 | Resumes and Handbills Are Dead: Use Scenarios to Network Into Jobs • Find people talking about your scenario(s) • Help them by asking further questions & offering ideas • Bookmark the interaction: you can build a portfolio of the best – Example => http://pinboard.in/u:csrollyson/t:csrblogcomment • Copy parts of the text and do a short blog post – Even better, do a Google+ post • Focus on high quality venues & conversations – Blogs – Forums – Mainstream media (MSM) 20 Toolbox: Serve People in the Social Channel " When you serve publicly, you're immortal in a good way
