1. How does your media product represent
particular social groups?
2. How have we challenged Stereotypes?
In our production we could see that we have challenged many different
stereotype. One main stereotype we have challenged is that our antagonist is a
female and our protagonist is a male. This is going against the traditional
stereotype and representation of that women our weak.We show that men are
weak at the funeral scene when we have a high angle shot on William as we
are looking down on him as his is weak and vulnerable. This stereotype will
attract our niche audience as they are most likely to accept the challenges to
gender, but some may argue that no its the mass market audience that will
accept this because they are younger and have been brought up differently...
3. ... and would have been most likely been brought up to
accept these things. As the niche audience are older they
would have been brought up in more traditional ways such
as women belong in the kitchen and that women should
listen to the men and do what men tell them to do,this
shows that women are though to be, this would also link to
class as William is in a lower class compared to the niche
audience, and as he is less sophisticated he is more likely to
accept these paranormal events. the upper class will
believe them women should be only speak when spoken to.
4. The working class with the income bracket between C2-E
are more likely to accept the super natural events as they
are no that aware of scientific evidence that is going against
super natural events. We have chosen to appeal to white
British people. This is because most of the audience will get
personal identity from the characters as they are both White
British. We can also link this to our primary audience as it
fits in with the mass market. We represent race in our
production as British white people have a comfortable life
and have all they want, but this does not last as William
loses his partner.
5. The characters are aged between 20-25 this is because our primary audience
can relate to them as they will be in a similar age bracket, we have also chosen
this age as this age group are more likely to accept the events that are
happening. We have chosen for the main character to be male. This is because
we are an independent company and we are appealing to a niche audience as
we are going against the stereotypical girl getting targeted by the spirit. When
we came to finding our actors we had a lot of problems as they dropped out last
minuet so i had to fill the role, this was a slight issue as we wanted the couple to
look older but this did not turn out as well as i hoped.
6. We have chosen to have our characters to be straight, we
did this because it is the `best` relationship you can
have. But in the end we see that it is not actually the best
relationship you can have as it goes wrong in the end, by us
doing this we are going against hegemony, therefore we are
more sophisticated and are more appealing or our niche
audience.
7. Constructionist theory
The representations that are given to the audience are that
men are weak and sensitive. The reality is that anyone
would be sensitive and broken in this type of situation. The
opinion of the producer is that it is ok for men to be weak
and sensitive. The social context is that times are changing
and people are thinking differently, and people are
accepting new things.
8. The Hegemonic ideology
The hegemonic ideology is that women are weak, this is
shown by the ex partner, as she is stopping her ex partner
from finding other women. this is showing to the audience
that women will always nee a man to rely on, this also gives
the representation of that women are unstable and
controlling. even though we can represent her as strong she
is actually weak.
9. Female Representations
We can apply extreme empowered females as she is doing
supernatural stuff to get his attention, and she is doing this
to make sure she is on his mind and that she wont be
forgotten, this is given the representation that women are
clingy and need and want a lot of attention.
10. Did your representations suit your institutions?
yes, our representations do suit our institutions, as we are
an independent company, we only go against gender as we
need to challenge stereotypes and representations for our
secondary audience, the niche audience, but we also had to
follow some stereotypes and representations to suite our
primary audience, mass market.
