An introduction to aromatherapy and essential oil purchase, from Amrita Aromatherapy (amrita.net). This is a very brief and high-level introduction to what essential oils are, why purity is important in growing the source plants and in processing, and how to purchase essential oils and aromatherapy products for greatest health benefit.
1. UNDERSTANDING
PURE
AROMATHERAPY

2. Your experience of the fragrance and therapeutic
quality of an essential oil is dependent upon its
quality and a p p r o p r i a t e n e s s to the
situation.
In selecting essential oils, we encourage you to consider
the following points, as well as Amrita’s selection
criteria.

3. ORGANIC ..
Pesticides and insecticides are usually filtered out by
the process of steam distillation (except citrus oils,
which are primarily cold pressed).
Plants grown without these chemicals, however, are
usually healthier, and this in turn affects the quality of
the essential oil.

4. .. ECOLOGICALLY ETHICAL ..
Many experts regard wild-crafted herbs, which grow
away from people, farms and urban and industrial
pollutants, to be the best source of essential oils.
However, in some cases, herbs raised by
knowledgeable organic farmers exhibit greater
potency.

5. .. WILD CRAFTED /
SELECT FARMED
Amrita carries a large number of oils from wild-crafted
and certified-organic sources.
But many of Amrita's oils are from producers who farm
and process their oils in accord with ecologically sound
practices, even when there is no organic certification
available in their country.

6. GAS CHROMATOGRAPHIC
VALIDATION – A NECESSITY
Amrita’s gas-chromatographic (GC) testing of essential
oils (including chiral column assay), and expert analysis
of the results, guarantees the purity of the essential oils
Amrita offers.
It also shows the variation in the natural chemical
constituents, an important factor in determining
therapeutic quality.

7. DO YOU KNOW?
Large quantities of essential oils are produced for the
flavor, fragrance and personal care industries, which do
not require a botanically pure product but instead only
a consistent and reasonably priced product.
Therefore, a substantial volume of the essential oils on
the market are industrially processed, reconstituted,
rectified or otherwise chemically manipulated.

8. THE IMPORTANCE OF PURITY
The self-regenerative power of
Nature works through the oils
only if true, whole essential oils
are used.

9. IMPORTANCE OF 100% PURE,
UNADULTERATED OILS
Consider Eucalyptus Globulus: 99% of what is available
on the market is industrially rectified, under the
misguided thought of heightening its mucolytic power.
This rectified product is muscle contracting, and when it
is used to dissolve mucous in the respiratory tract it
causes the bronchi to contract!

10. PURE OILS HAVE NATURAL
BENEFITS
Un-rectified Eucalyptus Globulus, on the other
hand, is a muscle relaxant as well as a
mucolytic; the whole oil gives powerful holistic
and balanced effects.
