Changing behavior is less a matter of
  giving people analysis to influence
their thoughts, than helping them to
see a truth to influence their feelings.

The heart of change is emotions. The
flow of see-feel-change is more powerful
      than that of analysis-think-change.
The Heart of Change by John Kotter

Wired to Connect –
Emotions are Contagious
               Coaches are the “emotional
                  thermostat” for the client.
 Emotions mold not just our
                  mental attention but our biology.
               Nourishing relationships benefit
                  client and coaches health.
               Helping professions require
                  emotional regulation.
Daniel Goleman, Social Intelligence: The New Science of
              Human Relationships
Coaching Derailment Themes
Horney (1950) themes of low emotional intelligence
 Moving away from people - managing one’s
feelings of inadequacy by avoiding contact with
       coach and others.
 Moving against people - managing one’s self-
doubts by dominating and intimidating others.
    Moving toward people - managing one’s
       insecurities by building alliances.
People Development =
Mind and Heart
People Development Is People Development Is a
a State of Mind Matter of the Heart

Intellectual capability (IQ), Emotional and Social Intelligence

Coaching the Whole Person
IQ, EQ & personality EQ is the only quality that
are qualities we is flexible and can be

                                     determine how
                       Personality we think, feel
                                     and act.
Coaching competencies
   have strong emotional
  and social components.
“Coaches must be able to withstand the
heat, handle the setbacks, focus on
what’s possible and celebrate client and
professional success with equal parts of
                       joy and humanity.
To Get at
                                        Emotion,
                                        Coaches
Amygdala is deep within the most Go Deep...
     elemental parts of the brain.

The function of the inner part of the brain is survival.
Emotional Social Resilient Coach Approach
Billions of microscopic neurons line the road between
the emotional and rational centers of the brain

I Think Rationally
 (way over here)

                     Respond to Experience
                                                            Limbic System
                                                             (I feel here)

   Emotional Intelligence =
   Communication between rational
and emotional brain centers Spinal Cord
Your brain is plastic! (enters brain here)
                          You have an experience
Right Brain State of Mood
 In positive states of mind we are
     more creative,
 may also be less discriminating.
     better problem solvers
 Inclined to think about our future well
        being. (thrive)

 In negative moods we
 may be unpleasant to be around,
 pay more attention to detail,
 are able to keeping working on boring
        tasks,
 and are more inclined to think for our
        own well being ( survival)
The Road Well Traveled…
                     A 2-lane country road might sound nice…

But what you want is a super highway because increases in
traffic strengthen the connection between the rational and the
emotional centers of the brain.

                                        Your Emotional Intelligence is
greatly affected by your ability to
                                         keep this road well traveled.

  3. Example: think - react speak nsThe leadership team of a large manufacturing firm felt it was time for a shakeup and hired a new CEO. The new boss was determined to rid the company of all slackers. On a tour of the facilities, the CEO noticed a guy leaning against a wall. The room was full of workers and he wanted to let them know that he meant business. He asked the guy, "How much money do you make a week?  A little surprised, the young man looked at him and said,   "I make $400 a week. Why?"The CEO said, "Wait right here." He walked back to his office, came back in two minutes, and handed the guy $1,600 in cash and said, "Here's four weeks' pay. Now GET OUT and don't come back."Feeling pretty good about himself, the CEO looked around the room and asked, "Does anyone want to tell me what that goof-ball did here?"From across the room a voice said,"Pizza delivery guy from Domino's."

  6. A scenario to clarify the distinction between coaching and other professional and human developmentservices is provided by Feroce Coaching, www.ferocecoaching.com. (Cited with permission.)Let’s say you want to learn to drive a car. If you hire a:Counselor The counselor would help you find out what might be holding you back from driving the car.She or he would delve into your past to discover what kinds of experience you have had with automobiles.Consultant The consultant would bring you an owner’s manual and tell you everything you ever wantedto know about the workings of a car. The consultant would then leave you. She might return six monthslater to see how you had managed the actual driving part.Mentor The mentor would share her experiences of driving cars and the wisdom and lessons she hadlearned in her more rich experience with the matter.Coach The coach would seat you in the car, place himself in the passenger seat, and encourage, endorse, acknowledge and support you until you felt comfortable enough to go it alone.
  7. IQ: Static- fixed asset
  8. Questions to ask membersHow do emotions” or heart impact your career?Questions to ask meCan you tell me more about leading your career withemotions? Sure. The buss word is often referred to as meaningful work. My research about very smart peoplefound that “being the best in the world” was not enough to sustain career of greatness. What was as important, and often more important, was living a career of significance. They say there are two types of people who are successful in their career … those who Want to BE somebody great, or those who want to DO something great. That is the essence of a career of greatness. The ability to lead your career toachieve personal success ( best in the world) and careersignificance ( best for the world) When I coach clients, I often inquire about what are they doing that is creating greatness for themselves and also for their legacy? Exploring both success and significance. I then inquire, how are you communicating this to others? Questions to ask membersHow do emotions” or heart impact our leadership style? What can you do more to create a see- feel- connect approach to creating a culture of greatness?Questions to ask meCan you tell me more about a culture of greatness that leads to success and significance?Sure. The buss word is often referred to as meaningful work. My research about very smart leaders, and the teams they lead, found that “being the bets in the world” was not enough to achieve a sustained culture of greatness. What was as important, and often more important, is the concept of significance. They say there are two types of people who are attracted to leadership- those who Want to BE somebody great, or those who want to DO something great. That is the essence of a culture of greatness. The ability to lead so employee can achieve personal success ( best in the world) and performance significance ( best for the world) When I coach leaders I often inquire about what are they doing that is creating greatness? Exploring both success and significance. I then inquire, how are you communicating this to others? How do leaders begin to talk about Impact of emotional engagement? Great question. When I was a young leader, I was told “ do not bring your emotions to work- especially as a women. However, what we know now is to create high employee engagement requires the intelligent use of emotional knowledge. The emotionally intelligent person is able to remain calm in the face of adversity and choose a course of action that works in the long and short term. And, the higher you go in the organization the more emotional and social intelligence matters. Goleman’s research in over 500 organizations show 85% of top performers account for social and emotional intelligence. What this looks like is awareness of your emotional signals, ability to manage those signals, ability to demonstrate interactive empathy, and ability to manage social moments of truth. Leaders talk about this through their actions – and when initiating change- explain the energy behind the why? Energy needs to create a sense of urgency and an emotional pull when to the vision, a broad based relationship culture and interconnected transparency to support the vision. For example, a health care organization created transparency by taking the simple thank you note to the net level. Hand written, to arrive on the weekend.
  9. The chapter “Self-Mastery: The Right Brain State for the Job,” looks at the pros and cons of various positive and negative mental states. In positive states of mind we are more creative, but may also be less discriminating. In negative moods, we may be unpleasant to be around, but we pay more attention to detail, are more able to keeping working on boring tasks, and are more inclined to think for ourselves. The chapter also explores the subject of emotional regulation, and how the amygdala, which is responsible for the “fight or flight” reflex, can hijack the entire brain leading to panic and stress. Goleman identifies the top five “amygdala triggers” in the workplace: (1)condescension and lack of respect, (2) being treated unfairly, (3) lack of appreciation, (4) believing that you’re not being listened to and (5) being held to unrealistic deadlines.
  10. Identify: Are you aware of how you and others are really feeling?Manage: Can you manage your emotions to optimize your own and others career, and manage emotions to NOT derail relationships and performance of self and others?Focus: Do you know how to emotionally engage to get things done----civilly?
  11. Question to ask CynthiaWhere do you start to develop careerskills to increase awareness and master emotions?SMARTER people have high self awareness. They know and believe in their strengths. They focus their career interests on what they do well, and strive to do it better. They are focused on being success and feeling significance. They know how their work contributes to the organization and to their customers. They can confidently answer the question “Why do you work here or Why do you want to work here? They know the “wants”= emotional attraction.SMARTER people have skills to master their emotions. and know “what lights up the fire in their belly”. They design an environment and attract people that positively inspires their career. They are mindful and know how to tap into the positive emotions of thriving and avoid or minimize the negative or stagnant emotional path of surviving.Let’s look at the Positive vs. negative emotional paths- Are you choosing to survive or thrive?
  12. Question to ask CynthiaAttraction: we are emotional transmission towers- what and how are you attracting to move you career forward – what messages/people reinforce or distract your career goals?Resilience: Key workplace issue especially during VUCA TimesVolatileUncertaintyComplexityAmbiguity
  13. Social Brain- Tolerations: Empathy perspective:Tolerations are speed bumps: What are you tolerating in your career that if you created space and time to remove or minimize , would have you feel more free? Share story of stone in shoe.  How do I seek opportunities to demonstrate the ability to evolve?Tell me about a time when you initiated action that inspired greatness?Describe when stretched out of yourcomfort zoneand embrace innovation? How do you talk about mistakes? Good catch of the month? What skill or behavior can you seek to improve – make even brighter? How would you go about improving that behavior? How would your othersrecognize the improved behavior? You peers?Reciprocity: how you interact civility and with humanity
