Editor's Notes
Introduce – Independent facilitator – Auckland region
So what is this 5 th wall and why should you build it? Aim is to create a transparent tool and skill set Aim is independent users and not dependent users Pedagogy of the pencil Our energy goes into what to do with the pencil, not the how do we use it
E-learning reality check – the inverted funnel
The reality of most classrooms is timetabled access and very limited classroom equipment The rubbish equipment is in the classrooms whilst the best is in the ICT suite and you see it once a week Equipment should be at the point of learning and always in use.
Discuss each of these – define what you mean by each of these and reference the coming examples Re-purposing is hard to grab an image from but give the example in Interface-article about digital cameras and e-learning tools The vowel of confusion – e-learning
Try to give examples of how this could be managed, use re-purposing or layering of tools as an example here if needed
Distributed expertise – see three before me Yellow pages – teachers as learners and learners as teachers. How often do we model collaborative learning and life long learning as teachers?
David Jakes – highlight the slideshow as part of the link The clasroom reality for many schools but look again, what does this say about learning? Collaboration, group work Classroom layout can be managed with creativity
Computers at the point of learning. Computers arranged in a row is convenient for your cablers and IT manager, but are they the right people to be making educational decisions How collaborative is this set up Maureen and I discussed how to make her classroom collaborative – admitedly wireless – but have done it other ways too with cabled connections
Why I like wikis – wiki Hawaiian for quick – no fuss, get your work published Parents and SMT need to have the word published explained in a web perspective – published yet to be polished
Examples here of authentic audience – contributions valued, Engaging, Relevant, Authentic Discussion tab a great place to enable re-purposing of previously published work – adding value and relevance to existing work Learning can happen beyond the 3:00 bell – building life long learners The slow fuses
These students requested that they run this session – they wanted their families to be a part of their learning environment – the wiki facilitated that Mel is presenting on this in Breakout 5. Modelling life long learning. Learners as teachers and teachers as learners – very powerful
Vocaroo enables students to say a lot more than they can type, great for discussions and capturing thoughts WE all have experienced the “I know that child has got more to say” moments when we assess just their writing, it is often the only evidence we have
Tyranny of the pencil – what about writing practice. Captured thoughts can be re-visited as notes to aid students to construct written work on a deeper level. Freed from the cognitive dichotomy of thought capture and physical mastery of the pencil.
