6. The Goal of EMDR
• Process completely the experiences that are causing
the problem, and to include new ones that are needed
for full health.
• “Processing” does not mean talking about it
• It means setting up a learning state that will allow experiences
that are causing problems to be “Digested” and stored
appropriately in your brain
• Inappropriate emotions, beliefs, and body sensations will be
discarded
• Negative emotions, feelings and behaviors are generally caused by
unresolved earlier experiences that are pushing you in the wrong
directions

Planning
• Therapist takes thorough history of client and
develops treatment plan
• Discussion of specific problem that has brought them into
therapy
• Behavior stemming from that problem and his symptoms
• Therapist develops targets from this information
• Target include events from the past that has created the
problem, the present situation that cause distress, and key
skills or behaviors that the client needs to learn from his future
well-being

• Clinician teach specific techniques
• Rapidly deal with emotional disturbance that may arise
• Primary goal of the preparation phase is to establish
relationship between patient and therapist
