In this newsletter you can read all the updates on DAKTARI in July and August. This means new animals rescued, volunteers, children, sponsors, etc.
Kindest regards,
the DAKTARI-team.
2. There has been a bit of activity these last two
months at Daktari on the animal side. We have
been asked to take care of a beautiful African Hawk
Eagle. She flew into a power line and her left wing is
quite damaged. We aren’t sure if she will fly again.
However the person who found her immediately
took her to the vet so she received the appropriate
care. JP and Andreas are both looking after her
following all the advice of our friend Dave who has
lots of experience with Raptors.
3. This is a very sad news I have to tell you. My brother Zulu wasn’t happy at all with our new girl friend (May)
that arrived a few months ago. She kept teasing us with her charm but Zulu didn’t like it at all. Although the
people of Daktari had made the camp very secure so I couldn’t even give her kiss… my brother Zulu managed
to cut the wire with his teeth and killed her. It was a shock for everybody and I have seen so many tears that
day!!! As Zulu was also trying to fight with me, Daktari decided that it could get rehabilitated so he can play
with his hormones in the wild African bush. He is therefore on another farm in a rehabilitation phase. I wish
him good luck and I didn’t want to go there. I am happy here, get food, water and even get people to enrich
my abilities and imagine all sorts of plans to keep me busy. Sorry but the wild isn’t for me as I love Daktari and
its children who can learn about species of my kind.
4. Good day, my name is « Easy »
I was found running behind a car, somehow I got lost and couldn’t find my
mother. Fortunately these wonderful people took me to the Daktari Sanctuary
where Michele prepared me nice milk. I was very thirsty. Michele said that
usually duiker are difficult to save and don’t want to drink. As I really wanted
to make it, I behaved very well and listened to her. She battled a bit for the
first bottle but I was very hungry and drank it all. That’s why they called me
Easy!!! I am getting stronger and stronger every day and I have even made
friends with Mr Gucci bijou as we are the same size!!! I love this little white
dog and I hope I will have lots of fun with him.
5. I am sure you all remember this photo by now. We asked you to
vote for our picture in the GlobalGving photo contest. We didn’t
win the first prize of $ 1000 but were the first in the « giving
knowledge » category. So this means that we will have the
opportunity to be on the GlobalGiving home page for a whole day
in the next few months. Likely this should be more funding so more
food for me and the kids!!! Thanks to all of you who voted for our
picture and to GlobalGiving for their continuous support.
6. Procon Marketing & Proglove Consolidated gave
R 25 000 together to help Daktari with the running
of the project. Thank you to our friend Debbie who
put us in contact with Procon and the success of the
staff of this company allowing them to support us.
If you own a company in South Africa remember
that Daktari is BEE registered and any donation will
help you with your BEE accreditation. I don’t know
much about this BEE thing but Michele knows and
you can email her at info@daktaribushschool.org
for more info.
7. Thank you so much to DIVA
MARKETING who shared their
knowledge and professionalism
by sponsoring DAKTARI with two
beautiful spider banners for our
next show. There is no doubt
that with this new tool we are
going to show off!!!
8. With the aim to improve the lives of the communities in which they operate,
KYOCERA Document Solutions South Africa has assisted Daktari in the donation
of a new printer so that we are assured to continue with our day to day tasks
effortlessly and efficiently.
Every week we have loads and loads of printing to do for our teaching
programme and the loyal old Kyocera printer bought years and years ago was
in need for an upgrade.
We were very happy with the service provided by the KYOCERA team and
decided to ask for their support in the supply of a new printer.
Not only did we received a positive answer, but the KYOCERA members also
gave us an impressive service. The donation was quickly organised, the
machine was prepared in time for collection by one of our friends, the
technical support was given to us before receiving the machine and once it
arrived, it worked like a dream.
We would like to say a big THANK YOU to KYOCERA for their support toward
the environmental education to the local community and for their exceptional
professionalism and generosity.
We encourage any of our networks to consider working with KYOCERAsince
they really deserve it and their machines are exceptionally reliable!!!
9. Thank you to Charlotte, a student of the Lycee St
Thomas D’Aquin in France where Michele went to
school. Charlotte organised a share of their operation
« Bol de Riz » (Bowl of Rice) to be donated to Daktari.
During the « bol de riz » event, everybody ate only a
bowl of rice to save money on their normal meal and
the profit went to charities. Thank you so much to the
parents and students of the school and Lycee of St
Thomas D’Aquin for their support toward the
organisation run by a compatriot. It means a lot to
Michele and all of us, although me… I prefer milk!!!
Well done Charlotte and we are waiting for you to
volunteer at Daktari!!!
