Editor's Notes
- I’m mostly Dutch from a Dutch enclave in West Michigan I’ll explain the Ducks and Decorated Sheds later, but a quick point of order with regard to Dutch Uncles before we begin I can tell you from personal experience that Dutch Uncles don’t always tell you what you’d prefer to hear
- The reason we’re reframing IA is because our old frame got blowed up The old framing was a bounded set with a fussy and increasingly unclear boundary, zero sum game The cats started to wander as the boundary lost coherence
- The centered set JJG proposed in Memphis works much better for this community It’s a center, not a boundary or barrier Proximity to the center matters far less than directionality This center holds for some but not all of us
- Reframing as centered set for IA = smarter than reframing as a bounded set My proposal: center of reframed IA set could be meaning… or perhaps “structures + meaning” Would require the grafting of our practice more purposefully into the traditions of architecture
- Reframing IA around meaning = continuity w/ rich tradition in architecture wrt structure + meaning Eisenman – the giving of form is far more than the making of shapes Mies: architecture begins with meaning. Two bricks toward what? The act of placing the bricks thoughtfully is and act of meaning-making with structure
- Us cats who’re centered around meaning and structure need to get to know these Dutch Uncles: VSB Ducks and Sheds to talk about the range of possibilities for working with meaning and structure
- VSB POV: Meaning in architecture usually ought to be invoked via context/allusion and encoded on surfaces rather than baked into deep structures
- They’re certainly different. PM and Pace layers. Is that really true? It feels less truthy as we go… Bricks are hard to change. Print is hard to change. Pixels and language??
- I’ve worked with design agencies and the baked-in structural meaning is what they art-direct out of my work They’re more accustomed to or skilled at the surface and/or they’re cowards They catch it more in terms of visual structure than semantic structure
- It’s ok sometimes to lead with design instead of architecture, and to apply meaning to surfaces and not address it structurally. Sometimes.
- It depends. When do you need to bring in the specialist information architects? You key it to the complexity of the goals, not primarily the tactics The more complexity and contradiction on either side of the equation, the more you need to be architecting first before you design
- It’s peculiar that for many, the idea of an architect is a Modernist Modernists pre-empt complexity and contradiction in architecture by replacing meaning with function (They also then reduce the number of functions) RV on P.J: complexity and contradiction cannot be reconciled without taking on meaning Not without simplification

- This is the order of MUST – order over context, in spite of context Work good until ambiguity creeps in: iTunes These approaches fail to be real about the complexity and contradiction of human activity These things rarely address or make meaning: look at overstock/closeout for examples of this in eComm
- Weinberger: “we have to get past the idea that there’s a right way to organize.” Shirky “the only people qualified to organize everything is everyone.” Who’s to say making AT&T’s headquarters a giant Chippendale is better or worse than any other way? Discards the possibility of a meta-narrative for what architecture “means.”
- This is the order of MAY: since everything is miscellaneous Un-decorated sheds Un-differentiated structure on purpose Algorithms picking what’s good today Effective structure but is it good architecture?
- DUTCH UNCLES HAVE SHOWN US THE ARCHITECTURE WE NEED the structural embrace of complexity and contradiction. A Conjunctive order, robust enough for actual life: of the beach *yet* mindful of some city-dweller needs Less clenched than the modernist’s MUST, but more courageous than the PoMo punt Lends itself to Duck-ery
- 1976 RSW: built environment is not good because we don’t have rich language for what good means We can’t innovate because all we have is NO and MORE (and MAY) Wurman via Kahn: language used in planning an architecture generates the architecture Hinton: language is infrastructure
- Before we can build good architectonic structure and give meaningful forms to the systems we’re developing, we have to first make coherent and appropriate semantic structures. Continuums make a system from the complexity and contradiction in project goals and user needs Not a brittle infrastructure of MUST, not a cowardly infrastructure of MAY but a robust infrastructure of YET.
- What holds true for organizing the bricks same holds true for words and pictures the way you order them creates meaning. What sets a brick-pile and a pile of words and charts apart from architecture is answered in the interplay of structure and meaning. This Snow Fall project is what a conjunctive order looks like.
