10 Read the fundraising leaflet. Are the statements true (T) or false (F)?
Do you care passionately about the planet? Do you worry about the future of many of the world’s
most endangered species? Do you have some free time? Do you want to make a difference? If
your answer is yes to any of these questions, then you’ve come to the right place.
The Orangutan Foundation was set up in 1990 and is now the foremost orang-utan conservation
organisation. Our mission is to conserve the orang-utan and the biodiversity of their habitat through
the protection of the tropical forests of Borneo and Sumatra.
We are a small organisation with a wide range of programmes that reflect the challenges involved
with successfully protecting a highly threatened species and fragile ecosystem. We believe that to
work most effectively, we have to involve the local communities who live close to the orang-utans’
habitat. Through education, awareness and inclusion our projects have a greater chance of
success.
Our work is in three main areas: conservation, research and education.
Conservation: We are the UK representative of the Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Project
(SOCP) and we deal with all aspects of the conservation of the critically endangered Sumatran
orang-utan. We work to shut down illegal activities such as logging and mining and the expansion
of oil-palm plantations.
Research: We have run the Pondok Ambung Tropical Forest Research Station since 2005 and we
support and encourage Indonesian and international research students and we award research
grants every year, not only for research into orang-utans, but also crocodiles, bats, macaques and
proboscis monkeys.
Education: It is clear that nature conservation benefits local communities so we have to start with
education at the earliest possible stage. We support an environmental learning centre that offers
educational activities and a sustainable agriculture and fish farm programme as well as organising
regular school visits. In the UK we aim to publicise our projects at all levels.
To continue our work, however, we need to raise funds and we do this through organised events,
public donations and sponsorship. If you would like to find out more about the work we do, please
check out our website. You will find lots of fundraising ideas from sponsored swims to film nights. We
hope you’ll want to join us and we look forward to hearing from you. Please help us to save the
habitat of some of the world’s most endangered species.

Do you worry about the future of many of the world’s most endangered species? Do you have some free time? Do you want to make a difference? If your answer is yes to any of these questions, then you’ve come to the right place. The Orangutan Foundation was set up in 1990 and is now the foremost orang-utan conservation organisation. Our mission is to conserve the orang-utan and the biodiversity of their habitat through the protection of the tropical forests of Borneo and Sumatra. We are a small organisation with a wide range of programmes that reflect the challenges involved with successfully protecting a highly threatened species and fragile ecosystem. We believe that to work most effectively, we have to involve the local communities who live close to the orang-utans’ habitat. Through education, awareness and inclusion our projects have a greater chance of success. Our work is in three main areas: conservation, research and education. Conservation: We are the UK representative of the Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Project (SOCP) and we deal with all aspects of the conservation of the critically endangered Sumatran orang-utan. We work to shut down illegal activities such as logging and mining and the expansion of oil-palm plantations. Research: We have run the Pondok Ambung Tropical Forest Research Station since 2005 and we support and encourage Indonesian and international research students and we award research grants every year, not only for research into orang-utans, but also crocodiles, bats, macaques and proboscis monkeys. Education: It is clear that nature conservation benefits local communities so we have to start with education at the earliest possible stage. We support an environmental learning centre that offers educational activities and a sustainable agriculture and fish farm programme as well as organising regular school visits. In the UK we aim to publicise our projects at all levels. To continue our work, however, we need to raise funds and we do this through organised events, public donations and sponsorship.
