This was a talk given at UXFest in Boston, Oct 1, 2013. UX: The New Brand Order Customers remember experiences, not your logo. We will discuss the shift in user experience as the lead role in defining and expressing brand in a company. We will explore and demonstrate the economic relationship between brand and experience. We will also discuss the sometimes adversarial issues that come between those on the branding side and those on the user experience side. We will discuss case studies from the speaker's personal experience with Coca-Cola, American Airlines, Merrill Lynch and SeaChange International. We will then present a six step roadmap to achieve success in this New Brand Order.

Brands are made for and by humans. Their greatest wish is to connect with humans. So why do they find it so difficult? From jarringly chirpy digital, social & mobile experiences to misguided content marketing efforts, brands’ (and, let’s face it, agencies’) attempts to ‘be more human' often make us cringe. And now, algorithms and big data means brands know more about us than ever before, and with this their opportunities to ‘act human’ have multiplied exponentially. But in many cases, their brand building efforts are failing: either to be convincing or in adopting the right aspects of humanity. And in so doing they become clingy, nosey or just plain creepy. So brands face a paradox: the more they try to be human, the more they risk alienating the humans they so want to connect with. So can brands be ‘more human’? Or more importantly…should brands be more human?

Erving Goffman ‘22-’83 Important, long-lasting impact Field work mid-century in Shetlands Became interested in micro-sociology What’s happening in the kitchen Goffman describes the offline world Social interaction: “that which uniquely transpires in social situations—in environments in which two or more individuals are physically in one another’s response presence.” Situation: “any physical area anywhere within which two or more persons find themselves in visual and aural range of one another.” Framework The stage Helps understand what’s happening Belief in the role one is playing Impression management Character is the process added to individuals to turn them into persons Masks Status Setting: the spaces are controlled Appearance: non-verbal communications Manner: also shows status and comfort Framework Dramatic realisations In the present of others, there are signals and signs Dependent on setting Members stress their habits and routines Idealisation Individuals incorporate and exemplify officially accredited values Our own intentions are idealised: we think we are meeting society’s expectations The debate: Is Goffman’s framework still applicable to the online world? On November 14, Duncan Chapple and Ian Scott launched the Analyst Value Index to an audience of around a dozen of the world's largest IT, telecoms and services firm. Scott, an expert social and market researcher, has combined the data from the Analyst Value Survey into an index that shows which firms are delivering the most value to their clients. In a separate Trajectory study, he also shows which firms are rising fastest. Scott and Chapple are now preparing custom analysis to help analyst firms understand how users see their value proposition, and to benchmark against other analyst firms.

Launched in 2003, the AR Intranet product was owned by the London-based analyst relations consultancy Lighthouse Analyst Relations. Built on the Intranets.com platform, which was acquired by WebEx in 2005, the application boasts all four components critical to an analyst relations system. However, as the platform was owned by WebEx this application was dependent on WebEx for feature developments and product enhancements. In addition, as Lighthouse’s primary source of revenue was services rather than software, the application was not the company's priority. Most clients of the AR Intranet used the application to look up information about little-known analyst firms and boutique analysts, particularly in EMEA and emerging markets. AR Intranet tracked more than 800 analyst firms, higher than the 655 firms that ARchitect had in its database at that time or the 500 firms for Analyst Profiles. According to Lighthouse AR founded Duncan Chapple, the AR Intranet was withdrawn after two developments in 2014: Cisco announced its intention to close the WebEx WebOffice platform, and Lighthouse AR was acquired by Kea Company, which focussed on the Lighthouse team on the Analyst Value Survey.

In our research paper titled "Qualitative Analysis on Tax Evasion and Reasons for Reluctance to Join ATL in Pakistan," we delve into the intricate dynamics of tax compliance and explore the underlying reasons why individuals in Pakistan might hesitate to become a part of the Active Taxpayer List (ATL) within the framework of business law and taxation. With a multidisciplinary approach, our team of five researchers embarked on an in-depth exploration of tax evasion behaviors and the factors influencing them. Through qualitative analysis, we aimed to unravel the complex interplay of socio-economic, cultural, and institutional factors shaping tax compliance attitudes among Pakistani taxpayers. Drawing on a diverse range of qualitative research methods, including interviews, focus groups, and content analysis, we gathered rich insights from a diverse sample of individuals representing various sectors of the economy. By immersing ourselves in the lived experiences and perceptions of taxpayers, tax advisors, and legal experts, we uncovered nuanced perspectives on tax evasion practices and attitudes toward ATL membership. Our findings highlight the multifaceted nature of tax evasion in Pakistan, shedding light on both the motivations driving non-compliance and the barriers to ATL enrollment. From perceived inefficiencies in the tax system to cultural norms and trust deficits in governmental institutions, our research identifies a myriad of factors contributing to tax evasion behavior and reluctance to join ATL. Furthermore, our study offers valuable implications for policymakers, tax authorities, and business stakeholders seeking to enhance tax compliance and foster a culture of transparency and accountability in Pakistan's taxation landscape. By addressing the underlying drivers of tax evasion and promoting the benefits of ATL membership, policymakers can design more effective strategies to broaden the tax base and promote sustainable economic development. In conclusion, our research paper represents a comprehensive endeavor to deepen our understanding of tax compliance dynamics in Pakistan and elucidate the complexities surrounding ATL enrollment. By unraveling the intricacies of tax evasion behaviors and attitudes, we hope to contribute to informed policymaking and foster a culture of tax compliance and integrity in Pakistan's business and taxation environment.
