In visual arts and graphic design, white space is fundamental to allowing a creation to exist, by creating delineation and focus. Similarly, in our lives, creativity often sprouts from the "white space" of time: the moments in our increasingly busy schedules between activities and thoughts that allow the subconscious to better absorb and connect information. Clearly, in order to be more creative, we need to open up this "in-between" space in our lives, but once we've done so, how can we best capitalize upon the brain's natural creative capacities? In this talk, we'll explore several counter-intuitive and potentially subversive methods for leveraging this "white space" to foment innovative thinking creative productivity.

Creating can be a tortured process. Sadly, this torture is often self-inflicted. The angst is not inherent in the creative process itself, but instead comes from the fears we have around our ability to produce. These fears manifest as the Inner Critic, which is the largest block to the flow of original ideas. But there’s good news: you can break the power that Inner Critic wields over you to become a creative powerhouse! In this talk, we’ll begin by exploring the origins of the Inner Critic and discover the tools that you already possess to vanquish it. Then we’ll dive into methods for dealing with the fear of being judged and criticized, how to transform highly critical self-talk into that of approval and encouragement, and ways to feel like your ideas are good enough and stop committing “ideacide.” By the end, you’ll have a roadmap of how to not only get unstuck, but to channel your creativity as a force for positive change in the world. The potential for greatness lies dormant in all of us. Banishing your Inner Critic is the first step to getting back in touch with the highly productive creative badass that you are and sharing your gifts with the world.

Sometimes it’s difficult to have the self-assurance needed to tackle having some of the difficult conversations that are part and parcel of your work – particularly with the high level of Impostor syndrome that many product managers experience. It turns out that silencing the inner critic is part of the foundation for cultivating the courage needed to have difficult conversations with more confidence. As a bonus, getting rid of the mean inner voice additionally enhances creative problem-solving, innovative thinking, and collaboration skills – three items that Product Managers have to use everyday. In this session, we’ll first identify the ways in which the inner critic weakens our nerve to tackle head-on the conversations that we need to have. Then, we’ll explore powerful mental reframes and tools for reducing self-doubt, dealing with impostor syndrome, and recognizing cognitive distortions. Finally, we’ll address some of the most common difficult conversations such as giving and receiving feedback, getting teams in alignment with each other, dealing with execs, and saying no, and tools to facilitate each. There are certain conversations that will always provoke anxiety. However, the tools and practices shared in this session will put you on the path to honing interpersonal skills, developing resilience, and increased self-awareness.
