ADHD Coaching What is it & how does it work?
Objectives
What is coaching? Sari Solden, in her book WOMEN WITH ATTENTION DEFICIT DISORDER says “...It can be wonderful to find a "Coach." This can be someone trained and paid or someone that you helped to develop, a non-judgmental friend who's organized but flexible. ... There are three main areas in which a coach can help in your personal life. First, she/he can help you stay on track and help you prioritize to meet your goals. ... Next, your coach can help you see your successes by being supportive, almost a cheerleader ... Thirdly, a coach can be right in your house to help you maintain systems, put papers away, getting to all the stuff that you hate: that boring, repetitive filing, paying bills, balancing the check-book or going through papers."

Editor's Notes

  1. Hi ,firstly I’d like to give you a brief introduction. My names Diane and I am a professional ADHD coach, I am also a mother to 4 boys, 2 of whom are diagnosed ADHDAt the same time as discovering my children’s ADHD I also discovered my own...It was a relief to me to realise I was ADHD. It finally explained years of struggle and challenges with my education, career and relationships. This was the start of a journey to discover more about ADHD, myself and my children..After 2 years of running a support group in Oakville I found out about ADHD coaching and got to experience the benefits for myself. The results were amazing to me. I began to set and achieve goals I had only dreamed of previously, I began to learn so much about myself about the way I think, what shuts me down, what energises me etc, from this place I went on to study and graduate for ADDCA one of the foremost ADHD coaching schools.
  2. Coaching is a partnership for change. The main philosophy of coaching is that the client is already whole and complete, creative and intelligent, the coach does not fix problems or give answers. The aim of coaching is to empower and support the client to find their own solutions. The coach uses their skills of mirroring, exploration, active listening, filtering, powerful questioning, accountabilty and system building,to create and ensure success. The aim of coaching is to create a support system and a catalyst for transformation, but also to treat the whole person not just the ADHD. No part of the persons life is too small or too big- its all a part of the whole and all relevant.Specifically the coach discovers through the sessions the thoughts and beliefs that underpin many of the clients choices, it’s through untangling these and shining a light on the often negative core beliefs that you can challenge and begin to undo them.
  3. Here is a quote from an esteemed author in the field of ADHD coaching, coaching is not always an easy concept to explain but the author here manages to succinctly outline the main areas where coaching can help.
  4. The usual set up for coaching is 2 to 3 phone sessions per month. The sessions vary from 30 minutes to typically 45 minutes depending on need and budget. Sessions are usually on the phone, but can also be on skype or occasionally in person. The recommendation, if you wish to see lasting change is for the partnership to last a minimum of 3 months, but often the coaching relationship can last from 6 months to a year or more. Sometimes clients who are well on the path to achieving their goals may be comfortable coaching themselves but may come back to their coach for a month or two down the road to help them intensify their commitment to something they are working on.The coach when working with a personwill be on the look out for; strengths, talents, assets, motivators, drivers, fears, limiting beliefs, obstacles, successes & systems that work, support networks and patterns. The aims and goals of coaching are to create the optimal life, setting and achieving goals and creating success, this is done in part by using the previously mentioned observation tools and then applying how best they work according to their specific goals and challenges.
  5. Here is a one of the models used in ADHD coaching (reprinted here with permission from the ADDCA school of ADHD coaching) to give you a brief overview of how the structure of coaching supports the goals and aspirations of a person. This structure may take anywhere up to 3 months to go through, depending on the circumstances,But for the purpose of this presentation & to try to make clear what coaching is, showing you one of the models goes some way to help you visualise the structure of the partnership.Launch is exactly what it sounds like- The beginning, the getting to, the un-covering, the re-finding of goals, desires, dreams, forgptten parts of their selves, sometimes this step takes a bit of digging. Once clear on the direction ,we move in to exploration, discovering what it is about this goal that is meaningful for the client, what they envision it doing for them, how will they know when they have achieved the goal etc, what are their measures of success? This section often takes the coaching in a completely new direction altogether and may have us back at launch, depending on what some of the motivating factors for the goals are;Any one of these steps can be several sessions long or they can be worked through in one session, it really depends .So when ready and enough exploration has occurred we step into action,Clearly actions that need to be supported by systems and strategies that work with the ADHD ers individual strengths and overcome any challenges. Here we look for possible obstacles and specific ways to support themLastly when all three of these steps are completed the passion step (my personal faveourite) is the natural by- product of the client stepping into an area of desire and strength and succeeding in a concrete way that ignites their passion, which then begins to change the way they see themselves and leads to more launches. .... And so on... An upward spiral!
  6. Coaching is a powerful tool for changing yourself from the inside out, it works best when both parents are involved in the coaching, but also works well when only one parent is being coached. For some younger children it can be challenging to coach them so a lot of the coaching for them can bedone through their main caregivers, parents, teachers etc. For children who are a bit older or more mature coaching is done one on one with a reporting back to the parents, Some young children however are able to be coached with fears and anxiety through role plays and visualisation, because this is fun and there’s no real agenda clash between what they want and what the parents want. Siblings can be coached too, ADHD affects the whole family including non ADHD siblings. Teens and adults are the most common age group for coaching because of their ability to be cognizant and self actualising. Teachers can also benefit from coaching. Either by directly working with the coach, or when the coach sits in on meetings with the parents, giving the teachers more information and perspective, also the teacher will benefit by having a child who knows themselves well, has goals and is motivated towards improving their situation and can articulate their needs betterTypically the people who come to coaching are at an impasse they are aware that they are under-performing and know that with the right tools and conditions they could really fly, they intuitively know something is holding them back but aren’t able to make the switch to maximise their talents alone....
  7. Coaching can only work if a person is ready, they need to be coachable, not everyone is coachable at any given moment.During the coaching relationship you may be inviting the person to try on some new behaviours and ways of thinking & being, sometimes this may mean stepping away from comfortable but limiting beliefs, therefore the willingness to try new things is essential for success. As is the right fit in a Coach, the rapport created between you will only enhance your success, A good coach will be on your side always, but also on the side of your highest good. Confidentiality and a non judgemental attitude are needed to foster trust, intimacy, exploration and growth. At this point I would like to warn against Coaching from a regular life coach for the ADHD er, because the coach will be using motivational techniques and ways to get a person moving forward that may be unsuited to ADHD ers & their specific challenges. It could exacerbate the situation because more failure without understanding will be created….
  8. Most of us believe that if we help a person by focusing on their weaknesses and try to improve them, they will succeed.but I would say that by focusing on their weakness you only increase their feelings of inadequacy, you affirm that something here is broken! and most importantly you miss their strengths! can you imagine how different our world would be today if they had tried to help Thomas Edison stay in school and focus on improving his poor behaviour and writing skills? would he have gone on to invent? Would he have found his strengths? Or Albert Einstein, who was described by one of his teachers as "mentally slow and forever adrift in a world of dreams," what a different place we would live in, if they had never found and stuck to their strengths.....I am not saying we should ignore the challenges either, they are very real and need attention, but what I am saying is that by ONLY focussing on weakness without trying to find out what their gifts are and then do your utmost to promote & highlight them is a serious omissionThis is where coaching comes into its own, because it is a strength based, positive forward moving approach In our communities today are boys and girls, young women and men who have no idea of their gifts, talents or strength, but unfortunately have a very clear idea of their failures & challenges and if they do happen to know about their strengths they don’t always get a chance to utilise them. What a difference could it make to our community if the ADHD person could see themselves from a place of strength and confidence, rather than weakness & challenge?
  9. The traits most commonly associated with ADHD are Hyperactivity, impulsivity and, inattention. Some of the lesser known traits are; Black & white thinking ,overwhelm, rumination, procrastination, hyper -focus, perfectionism ,transition challenges etc.Coaching is a perfect tool in the treatment of ADHD traits because it’s job is to bring the clients awareness to the patterns and beliefs that are behind them, it’s then possible to find new beliefs and systems to overcome many if not all of them Brain scans show that the dopamine in the brain of an ADHD er is lacking. Dopamine is the chemical that facilitates the neuro-transmission in the prefrontal cortex (often called executive function) which is in charge of reward ,motivation, movement,(voluntary and involuntary) and awareness or cognition. You probably already know this on some level with your own experiences with your children, you know for instance that rewards are more important to them and that you need to be creative about finding the motivation in a task so they can move forward, or that their ability sometimes to perceive their own actions is limited unless you bring awareness to it for them...The executive function of the brain is sometimes the called the conductor because itactslike the organiser that knows when to stop and go, when to slow down or speed up, skills that the ADHD erscan find challenging, this is where the coach can act like the clients personal conductor, reminding, prodding, challenging, supporting, organising and so on until the client is able to begin to do some of this for themselves
  10. Here are some familiar faces you may know, but did you also know they are ADHD?
  11. In this hall of fame you have the people who admit their ADHD and talk openly in the media about it, Whoopi Goldberg, Jim Carrey, Michael Phelps & Dustin Hoffman to name a few, and here you also see a list of people who, given what we know about their histories & were they around today would probably be diagnosed ADHD…..clockwise form top leftBenjamin Franklin, Pablo Picasso, Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, Sir Isaac Newton JFK, Leonardo Da Vinci Another thing that really pops for me as I look at this list is that they are all innovators, Unique, out of the box thinkers who knew their own strengths and talents and single mindedly pursued careers or dreams that fit their gifts….This gallery is a wonderful example of what can go right with ADHD…..
  12. As ADHD coaching is still fairly new in the treatment of ADHD there are not too many studies on the efficacy, but here is one which is well known in coaching circles
  13. As you can see from the list of traits, they all made a marked reduction after coaching. This graph shows the percentage of clients who are experiencing these traits before (in lilac, and after in purple)
  14. A.N.T. EatersWhen you are sad, mad, nervous or negative; 1. Write down the thought. 2. Is it true? 3. Can I know it is true 100% of the time? 4. How will I feel if I believe this thought? 5. Who would I be, how would I feel and what would my life be like if I believed this?  6. Reverse the thought and write down the opposite, positive thought.   7. Which is more probable, the negative, or the positive thought?  8. Who would I be, how would I feel and what would my life be like if I believed this? Its advisable to get permission to do this before you do it, also to do it with something where there’s not too much emotion in the moment as this can seem like you are trying to dismiss or minimise the hurt, so choose your time to do this wisely
  15. I know! When you make a slide the golden rule is no more than 4 things on a slide. But for this I thought I could make an exception! Some of these gifts are the positive side of the ADHD traitsLike; spontaneity and willing to take more risks is the flip side of impulsivity, as is energetic and enthusiastic the flip side of hyper-activity,The brain storming, visionary & creativity is the flip side of inattention or day dreaming. If you think back to the gallery of famous people in the previous slide you can see how some or all of these traits would be a big part of their success formula...
  16. I’d like to thank Janine for inviting me here today to share with you the power of coaching for ADHD, if you have any questions I have some time now to answer them.
