5. Staff Development: "Closing the Gap" Purpose LISD Technology Plan states that many teachers do not have necessary skills to fully and effectively integrate technology into their instruction. The purpose of this will be to close the gap between teachers who have technology skills and those who do not. Learner Objectives 1.) All teachers will have a better understanding of technology TEKS, and the fact that all students must be technology literate by 8th grade. 2.) Teachers will feel more comfortable with technology integration and technology TEKS. 3.) Teachers will use human resources for technology integration available to them.
6. Activities 1.) Open with a Temperature Dot . “Where are you with technology integration in your classroom and instruction?” -I am completely comfortable with the use of technology in my classroom. -I am comfortable with... -I am uncomfortable with... -I am extremely uncomfortable with... 2.) Display Giddens results from “Teaching and Learning” section of STaR Chart. Discuss where we are and where we want to be. Discuss how we are going to get there (bone diagram). 3.) Display and discuss Technology TEKS and state mandate that all students must be technology literate by 8th grade. “Did you know that even Pre-K has Tech TEKS!?” 4.) Getting started... -Provide teachers with a list of simple ways to start integrating technology into the classroom. -students write reports on computer, as opposed to hand-written -create graphs/charts using Excel -have students create presentations with Power Point or similar software -have students use website material as a source for an expository text 5.) Provide teachers with a list of school and district resources available to them, specifically technology contact people. Assessment Using “Snap Shot” data to determine if technology integration has increased. Snap Shots are quick glances at classrooms in action. All Snap Shots are compiled for school and district data analyses.
7.
8. Activities 1.) Show Snap Shot data of how technology is being used in the classroom. Teachers will note that most students are simply rehearsing or practicing. 2.) Display Bloom's Taxonomy, Cognitive Domain. Have teachers brainstorm ways to incorporate higher order thinking skills through technology (knowledge, comprehension, application, analysis, evaluation). 3.) Have each teacher create a blog at blogspot.com. Share with teachers how to incorporate blogging into curriculum and lesson plans. Assessment Informal teacher observation and Snap Shots.
9.
10. Activities 1.) Hand-out: What online resources are available for teachers to access student data and information? Eduphoria and Pearson. The hand-out will have access and log-in information, as well as information on navigating the database. The hand-out will also contain contact information, in case a question arrises. 2.) How Committed? As an exit ticket, teacher's will either place a hot dot on 25%, 50%, 75%, or 100% committed to using online databases to access student data and information. Assessment I will set up a blog about this topic. I will instruct teachers to begin an online discussion about this topic. I will create an online survey that teachers will take, by February 15th, to see if teachers are becoming more comfortable with using online databases.
11. Evaluation for Action Plan: The following will be used as evidence of achieving action plan goals:
12. Goal #1: LISD Technology Plan states that many teachers do not have necessary skills to fully and effectively integrate technology into their instruction. The purpose of this will be to close the gap between teachers who have technology skills and those who do not.
13. Goal #2: Information gathered from data and interviews at Giddens supports the idea that students are using technology on a regular basis in the classroom. However, technology use is generally limited to practicing or rehearsing acquired skills and knowledge at school. On the other hand, kids at home are connecting, synthesizing, evaluating, and socializing through technology at home. The purpose of this professional development is to help teachers move kids from a lower level of thinking and doing with technology, to a higher level.
14. Goal #3: A push toward online databases of student data and information is a key component of Leander ISD's Technology Plan. Teachers need to feel increasingly comfortable with using on line databases.
