Editor's Notes

But Uncle Ian would never drive withour a seatbelt, like the police said. He tracks down his uncle’s car and makes a discovery. What kind of “accident” leaves a car riddled with bullet holes? 3. One of Those Hideous Books Where the Mother Dies by Sonya Sones It’s bad enough that Ruby’s mother died recently. Now she has to fly to California and move in with her father. A father she has never met. A father who never cared enough to visit her. A father who is a famous movie star. With fancy cars, a mansion, servants, an Oscar. Can she learn to love Someone who has never been there for her?
  4. Sleeping Freshmen Never Lie by David Lubar Welcome to Scott Hudson’’s freshman year of high school. • He isn't the handsomest or most popular guy around and he doesn't have a clue as to how to talk to Julia, the girl who once shared his peanut butter crackers and has morphed into the hot chick over the summer. • Seniors smack him on the head on the bus. • He doesn't have classes with his best friends. • His Spanish teacher has a thick French accent. • His gym teacher is seriously demented and is surely out to kill him. • And his homework load? Enormous. Then, in trying to get Julia’s attention, he finds himself covering sports for the school newspaper, working on the school play and running for the student council. And on top of all of this, his parents have announced that they're having a baby. He's so in over his head—there aren't enough hours in the day for everything!
  5. IS IT “DUCK TAPE” OR “DUCT TAPE” Here’s the real story: page 124 of Discover’s 20 Things You Didn’t Know About Everything

Nursersy Crimes Detecttive Jack Spratt and his assistant Mary Mary Quite Contrary investigate.
  9. On a gigantic underground racetrack, tiny particles speed in a circle, just to crash into each other head-on. The idea of this is to simulate nothing less than the beginning of our universe. These days this big-bang machine is being brought into operation at CERN in Switzerland.
  10. Fresh Off the Boat by Melissa de la Cruz Vicenza is a girl who came from Manila to America. Her parents told her it was for a better life. But Vicenza is very confused. Back home in the Philippines, Dad was an investment banker and Mom ran a chic restaurant. They shopped at the finest boutiques. In America, their living room is furnished with lawn chairs. And their winter jackets are purchased at a thrift shop. Vicenza sets out to solve this family mystery and try to find a place in her new school, new community, new country.
  11. The Terrorist by Caroline Cooney Billy was just an innocent little boy riding the tube home in London. As he left the train, a man handed him a package and said his friend had dropped it. The package blew up, killing Billy. A random act of terrorism. No suspects. Big sister Lauren is determined to find the people behind this terrorist act. She discovers that terrorists look and act just like us.
  12. All American Girl by Meg Cabot Samantha is a very talented artist. To make some extra cash, she sells drawings of celbrities to her classmates. When her parents find out, they decide to help her grow her talent by taking art classes. But Samantha hates the class; they won't let her draw what she wants. So she lets her parents drop her off, goes in the front door and right out again. And that's how Sam ended up on the sidewalk that morning. And that's how she ended up saving the life of the President of the United States
  13. Matt lives on the estate of El Patron, a drug lord operating somewhere in what is now northern Mexico. He knows he is different somehow. He's not allowed to play with other children, there is a huge commotion every time he falls down or gets a little cold, his mother is not really his mother and he has no idea where his biological mother and father are. As he begins to grow up, he learns pieces of the truth. He was genetically engineered. His DNA is that of El Patron himself. And Matt is being raised for spare parts so that, as El Patron ages and his body parts fail, Matt can donate a kidney, part of a liver or, if need be, a heart. Can Matt escape the real dangers of El Patron. If he escapes the House of the Scorpion, can he also escape his identity as a clone?
  14. Silent to the bone by E.L. KonigsburgTrying to call 9-1-1 to save his half-sister, thirteen-year old Branwell Zamborska is struck dumb. He can’t utter a word and just stands there as the operator begs him to speak. When the au pair or babysitter accuses him of hurting his little sixth month old sister, he can only stand there and stare. Unable to defend himself, he is taken away to the Clarion County Juvenile Behavioral Center. No one can make him speak, and it is starting to look like he is guilty. As the state begins to mount a case against Branwell, his father calls on Connor, Branwell’s best friend, to visit him to see if Connor can break through his wall of silence.

  16. Flash Forward Robert J. Sawyer On a gigantic underground racetrack, tiny particles speed in a circle, just to crash into each other head-on. The idea of this is to simulate nothing less than the beginning of our universe. These days this big-bang machine is being brought into operation at CERN in Switzerland. But what if something went wrong? In Flash Forward, every human passes out for a few minutes. When they wake up, they recall their future ten years from now. And one of the scientists sees his own murder. Can he prevent it?
  17. It was a dark and stormy night; Meg Murry, her small brother Charles Wallace, and her mother had come down to the kitchen for a midnight snack when they were upset by the arrival of a most disturbing stranger. "Wild nights are my glory," the unearthly stranger told them. "I just got caught in a downdraft and blown off course. Let me sit down for a moment, and then I'll be on my way. Speaking of ways, by the way, there is such a thing as a tesseract." A tesseract) is a wrinkle in time. And A WRINKLE IN TIME by Madeleine L’Engle is an adventure in space and time, just like LOST!
  18. Utopia by Lincoln Child It’s the theme park of the future. A place where computers generate virtual realities. You can wear armor and have a swordfight with a knight of the round table. And because it’s not real, you can’t be hurt. Until terrorists hack into the computers and make this theme park a killing ground.
  19. Cell by Stephen King Most of us have one of these. And if you walked through Boston Common on a beautiful spring day, you might notice that most people were on the phone. Now imagine that a signal comes through those phones. A signal that turns normal people into zombies. Would you be a zombie or a survivor fighting for your life?
  20. '“Dead girl walking,” the boys say in the halls. "Tell us your secret,” the girls whisper, one toilet to another. I am that girl. I am the space between my thighs, daylight shining through. I am the bones they want, wired on a porcelain frame. Lia and Cassie were the "wintergirls," forever frozen in their obsession to be thin. They need to be in control by not eating, by purging, by exercising, by cutting. But when Cassie goes too far and dies, Lia is haunted by her former best friend, by her own guilt, and by the fear that she might be next. Can a wintergirl bloom in the spring? Wintergirls by Laurie Halse Anderson
  21. Confessions of a Shopaholic by Sophie Kinsella Becky Bloomwood has always wanted to write for a fashion magazine. But her first job ends up being for a financial planning magazine. She hopes to work her way into a dream job one day. But what if her boss finds out that his finance writer, who gives advise to readers on managing credit cards, is a secret shopaholic and can’t say no to a good sale?
  22. Ernest Hemingway famously wrote a six word memoir: "For Sale. Baby Shoes. Never Used." That tells quite a story, doesn't it? In Not Quite What I Planned (SC Str), the editors of Smith Magazine solicited "famous and not so famous" writers to submit their own six word memoirs. Here's one of my favorites: "Followed rules, not dreams. Never again." I could think about that one all day.
