Question The sun pulls on the earth with the force of gravity and causes
the earth to move in orbit around the sun. Does the earth pull
equally on the sun? Why?
Ideal Answer The force of gravity between earth and sun is an interaction
between these two bodies. According to Newton's third law of
motion, if one body exerts a force on the other then the other
body must exert an equal and opposite force on the first body.
Therefore, the sun must experience a force of gravity due to the
earth, which is equal in magnitude and opposite in direction to
the force of gravity on earth due to the sun.
Expectations 1. The sun exerts a gravitational force on the Earth.
2. The earth exerts a gravitational force on the sun.
3. The two forces are a third-law pair.
4. The magnitudes of the two forces are the same.
Anticipated
Misconceptions
1. Only the larger object exerts a force.
2. The force of earth on sun may be less than that of sun on
earth. 16

Editor's Notes

  1. Please copy, adapt, photograph, video. Tell your friends!
  2. Massive investment by educational software vendors, from VC-backed startups to large international media companies. VLE/LMS vendors all have an analytics product. Mostly American, but many British too, and UK schools use them a lot.
  3. I picked this one at random because I saw a presentation at London Knowledge Lab.
  4. Whole series of cognitive games, informed by learning analytics research, and using the learner’s behaviour to tailor their experience of the game to optimise their learning – and still fun. (Some of them suck.)
  5. Refraction game. Teaching about fractions.
  6. Refraction game. Teaching about fractions.
  7. Art Graesser, University of Memphis Full on automated tutoring. Research in to what human tutors do: engage student, track misconceptions, teaching dialogue. Except they don’t. Conversation – natural language processing.
  8. Also exploring emotions – detecting emotions from camera, adjusting accordingly. If frustrated, hints and conciliatory. If bored, more exciting/change pace or topic.
  9. Cohort dispositional analytics. Building critical self-awareness. Correlations with success measures, but complex relationship. Learning power goes down over time in school!
