Building Connected Leadership
1.
2. Welcome
Welcome to the talk by the guy with the funny
accent. If you can understand me, you should
get extra credit for that. What do I mean?
The United States and the United Kingdom.
Two countries divided by a common language…
9. The Future World of Work -
What do you Think?
Less Complicated? More Complicated?
More Resources? Fewer Resources?
Slower Pace? Faster Pace?
Less Global? More Global?
Connections & Relationships
Less Important? More Important?
Less Collaborative? More Collaborative?
10. These Things I Believe
Connection gives us meaning
Flow beats work-life balance
Conversations are the bond
Vulnerability is courage
Productive beats busy
Artistry is underrated
Fear sucks
11. Vulnerability
Vulnerability is the path to
love, to belonging, to
innovation, trust and
creativity.
85% of interviewees for
Brene Brown’s research can
recall a time in school that
was so shaming it forever
changed how they thought of
themselves as learners – 50%
of those recollections related
to art and creativity.
12. Vulnerability
‘Vulnerability is also scary,
counterintuitive, unmanly,
unprofessional and un-
American. It is not safe, not a
best practice, not
conventional wisdom, and
not comfortable. But it is
always the shortcut, the way
through, the answer, and
worth it.’

36. The Trust Overlap
What
You
Say
What
You
Do
When what you say and what you do
overlap, you get trust. And that’s cool.
When they don’t, you get trouble. And
that’s what you deserve.

Most communication is broadcast. Can be a useful way to let folks know what’s going on – and if you have used a conversational method to involve and consult then people will have a better ideas of what is coming and having been a part of the process – more likely to support. And always beware: The opposite of honesty is silence. When you say any questions – and there is silence don’t misinterpret that silence for agreement. Conversational leadership style is powerful. Be it one to one or many to many. World café is a great way to help facilitate big conversations:Clarify purpose and strategic intentExplore critical issues and questionsEngage all key stakeholdersGuide collective intelligence toward effective action

Artful and playfulness – towards a coaching culture. This exercise shows the power of coaching. Two minutes to draw something. One minute non judgemental questioning from your partner then two more minutes to redraw or enhance. What a difference!
