9. CAUSES OF SAD
 SAD is related to a lack
of serotonin, and serotonin
polymorphisms could play a
role in SAD,although this
has been disputed

cause may be related
to melatonin which is
produced in dim light and
darkness by the pineal gland

10. COMPLICATIONS
 All of this leads to
depression, pessimistic feelings of
hopelessness, and lack of pleasure
which characterize a person
suffering from this disorder
 The Depressive state of patient
can in some cases amount to
SUICIDAL DISPOSITION. Often
the patient can present with a
picture of BIPOLAR DISORDER
which would make it hard to
specify the case in patient's
lifetime

11. DIAGNOSIS OF SAD
According to the American Psychiatric Association, for a
diagnosis to qualify as SAD, following four criteria must
be met:
1} Depressive episodes at a particular time of the year
2} Mania/Hypomania a at a characteristic time of year
3} These patterns must have lasted two years with no
non seasonal major depressive episodes during that
same period
4} These seasonal depressive episodes outnumber
other depressive episodes throughout the year
