Chapter 3
The achievement of universal participation in education
will be fundamentally dependent upon the quality of
education available (EFA, 2005)
 Emphasis - assuring an increase in children’s cognitive
development by improving the quality of their education
Mathematics – An essential ingredient in the
knowledge society
This implies to the need for teaching
mathematics

Students work primarily Alone Students work primarily in Groups
Strict adherence to Fixed Curriculum and correct
answers is highly valued
Pursuit of Student Questions and

Curricular activities rely heavily on
Textbooks and Workbooks
Curricular activities rely heavily on Primary Sources of

Assessment of Student Learning is Separate from
teaching and occurs almost entirely through testing
Assessment of student learning is Interwoven with

So let us teaching mathematics with the
help of ICT to fulfill the significance and
necessity of teaching mathematics. Policies
also recommends the same…
Policy Perspective
21
Policy Recommendation
National Policy of Education Education can and must bring about the fine synthesis between change-oriented
technologies and the country's continuity of cultural tradition
National Policy on Education, 1986
- Revised Policy Formulations
Mathematics should be visualised as the vehicle to train a child to think, reason,
analyse and to articulate logically.
National Curriculum Frame work
2005 – Focus Paper
Mathematisation of the child’s thought processes.
National Curriculum Frame work
2005
Individual and group exploration of connections and patterns, visualisation and
generalisation, and making and proving conjectures are important, and can be
encouraged through the use of appropriate tools that include concrete models as in
Mathematics laboratories and computers.
Principles and Standards For
School Mathematics,
National Council of Teachers of
Mathematics,
Develop deeper understanding of mathematics with the appropriate use of
technology
Areas not focused
Engaging visual/sound effects provide learners with enhanced visualization and broadens
their horizon. This not only makes the concept more relevant for the students; but also
bring in more life to an otherwise seemingly dull subject.
Lets teach Mathematics

Editor's Notes

  1. We strive to provide Education for all. It can be achieved only if a quality education is provided as we live in a knowledge society.
  2. The knowledge society is build only where all the blocks in its structure are appropriately addressed. The modern system of education aims at developing the 21st century skills in the students so that they lead a successful life in the knowledge society.
  3. Today’s student will live and work in the 21st century, in the era dominated by computers, by world-wide communication, and by a global economy. Jobs that contribute to this economy will require workers who are prepared to absorb new ideas, to perceive patterns, and to solve unconventional problems. Mathematics is the key to opportunity for these jobs. Through mathematics, we learn to make sense of things around us. As technology has mathematicized the workplace, and as statistics has permeated the arena of public policy debate, the mathematical sciences have moved from being a requirement only to future scientists to being essential ingredient in the education for all. So Mathematics has become an essential ingredient in the modern education system. This gives rise to need of teaching mathematics.
  4. So it’s clear that the new workforce skills require more than just the reading, writing and math skills. These are important, but only a foundation. So what are the new work force skills that are required? Technology literacy is clearly key. To access, manage, analyze, integrate, evaluate and create information in a variety of forms and media. They need to know more than just how to use technology (e.g. how to use a computer or digital camera), but to be able to harness technology to effectively gather knowledge, communicate, collaborate and compete in performing their jobs. They need to demonstrate originality and inventiveness in work; champion and communicate new ideas, and integrate knowledge across disciplines. It is their creativity that will lead to innovation and propel their professional success They need to be effective communicators, to be able to understand, manage and create effective oral, written and multimedia communication in a variety of forms and contexts. They need to be able to think critically and have sound problem solving skills, to not just memorize, but to frame and analyze data, and synthesize information. They need to exercise sound reasoning and analytical thinking; and use knowledge, facts, and data to solve workplace problems. The need to be flexible so the can adopt to changing environments and responsibilities. And in an increasingly global economy they need to be able to effectively collaborate with diverse multi-cultural teams, to build relationships, negotiate and manage conflict with colleagues and customers. To become tomorrow’s innovators (the ones that power local economies) these are the skills that industry is searching for, these are the skills they need to develop.
  5. It is necessary to sow the seeds (teach) mathematics because: A good mathematical background with the knowledge of concepts and theories is essential for meeting challenges of the modern technological society. Mathematics teaching helps to apply mathematical concepts and theorems to new situations. Teaching of mathematics develops the ability to transfer the mathematical type of thinking and reasoning to daily life situations. Mathematics provides a clear understanding of the culture and development of our civilization. Mathematics helps to appreciate the applications of mathematics for the scientific and technological advancement. Teaching of mathematics provides sufficient mathematical skills to meet the demands of daily life. Mathematics teaching helps in better understanding of the world around us. Teaching of mathematics develops ability to make independent decisions in the societal issues. Mathematics teaching inculcates a good deal of self-reliance, self- confidence, tolerance and open-mindedness. Mathematics provides a framework for solving problems Teaching of mathematics develops ability to transfer the knowledge and skills learned through mathematics lessons to other context in the workplace and in everyday life. Mathematics is an essential element in communications. Mathematics is a powerful tool in the hands of the learners. Teaching of mathematics develops logical thinking and reasoning, critical mind and creative imagination. Mathematics teaching develops ability to apply mathematics and make meaningful connections to life’s experiences. Teaching of mathematics enhances the ability to communicate mathematical ideas coherently and clearly to peers, teachers and others. Mathematics teaching helps to think alternative methods of solving problems. Teaching of mathematics enhances the ability to apply mathematical ideas and relationships to areas outside classroom such as art, science and other curricular areas and in everyday life, especially physical phenomena.
  6. As we are teaching to the 21st century students who are digital natives, we also need to equip our self with the skills required
  7. Marc Prensky coined the word “Digital Natives”.
  8. Digital natives have continuous partial attention and multi-tasking. #Digital natives think and process information differently. Media and gadgets are ubiquitous parts of everyday life New gadgets allow them to enjoy media and carry on communication anywhere The internet is at the centre of the revolution Multi-tasking is a way of life - and people live in a state of “continuous partial attention” – Linda Stone.
  9. Where do we teachers stand? Are we digital natives?
  10. Though we are digital immigrant we can assimilate to be digital natives

  12. So as teachers we need to travel the road ahead to really teach mathematics to these digital natives with the real sense.

  15. Engaging visual/sound effects provide learners with enhanced visualization and broadens their horizon. This not only makes the concept more relevant for the students; but also bring in more life to an otherwise seemingly dull subject.
