    INTRODUCTION
    Colleges and universities are beginning to recognize the need to
    prepare students for Global challenges. Most colleges now offer
    many of their classes online using multi-media presentations for
    teaching their curriculum. Some are creating programs to teach
    students, who themselves are planning to become educators, how
    to include new technologies in their classrooms to enhance the
    learning experience, and provide the necessary new learning skills
    that their students will need.

    INTRODUCTION
    This book has been developed to discuss the historical trends in
    literacy education, to look at how those trends have become less
    effective in the modern classroom than they used to be, and to
    introduce ways that teachers and administrators can update
    their curriculum to make literacy more relevant for the students
    of the 21st century. Since materials on the internet reach a more
    diverse population than traditional books, writing has to be
    targeted at a more wider, global audience.

    SETTING THE STAGE : HISTORY OF LITERACY
    In order to understand the problem with the way literacy is being
    taught, it is important to first look at a historical overview of
    literacy and how it has been handled in the schools.
                This chapter examines the different kinds of materials
    that have been available for reading, and compare and contrast
    them with the things and material that children need to read
    today.                                 “It is evident that reading and writing today is significantly
                                                            different than it was. . . . .”

    ONLINE READING COMPREHENSION AND
    WRITING
    Children today will be growing up in a world where they would be
    required to use a computer and the internet for all of their basic
    needs. Therefore, schools must strive to teach reading and
    writing in a way which includes the kind of materials people use on
    the internet.
                This chapter will discuss what online literacy includes, and
    how to modify classrooms to accommodate those changes.

    LANGUAGE AND COMMUNICATION
    Today’s children will be working in a global economy, which will
    require them to understand language and to communicate in a
    different manner than children who grew up to work in a local
    economy. Therefore, expanding the language and communication
    curriculum from the youngest grades is necessary to ensure that
    students will be prepared for the future.
                This chapter exclusively discusses the topics of language
    acquisition and communication.

    THE PAPERLESS WORLD
    For years, industry has been predicting that we are moving
    towards a paperless world. It has been hard to take it seriously.
    Since the advent of the personal computer, people use
    tremendous amounts of paper. However, the paperless world that
    we all have been hearing about for more than twenty years is
    finally emerging.
                Read about how schools can respond timely and be leaders
    in the paperless movement rather than trying to catch-up later.

    A GLOBAL AUDIENCE
    When people talk face-to-face, the listener can often discern
    from the body language and response of the speaker whether the
    message is being understood properly or not. However, when we
    write, the advantage of visual contact with the reader is lost
    completely. It is, therefore, important to consider your audience
    from the start when you write.
                This      chapter        discusses          issues   that   students   will
    encounter when they write for a global audience.

    ONLINE ASSESSMENTS
    Assessment tests have been devised to ascertain students’ actual
    levels of performance in order to compare the individual scores
    to the community standards, and to derive important information
    about the effectiveness of the public school education.
                The focus of this chapter is to discuss how online
    assessments can be used to improve the evaluation of literacy
    skills and include new literacy types.

    THE NEXT STEP : PREPARING FOR THE CHANGE
    Since most students will be working in an environment that will

    using the internet and the world wide web, schools MUST teach
    them the skills they need to be successful. Computer and other
    related technological advances need to become an important
    aspect of the school curriculum.
                This chapter suggests some of the most logical and
    important steps towards moving in the right direction.
